Thankfully, that changed slightly with iOS 14.

Why would someone need to change their iPhone’s app icons?

Perhaps you don’t like the look of one particular icon. Maybe there are a few that deserve changing.

Or perhaps all of the default icons sicken you to your core. Whatever your level of loathing, Apple’s Shortcuts app is the solution.

This article will show you everything you need to know to customize iPhone app icons on iOS.

How to change app icons on iPhone

If you are ready to make your iPhone your own, it’s time to dive in.

Once you hit Add, the Shortcuts app will close automatically and take you to your home screen, where the new icon should appear.

From here, you’re free to move the shortcut to wherever you want it to be.

To avoid confusion, remove the original app from the Home Screen so it’ll only be in the App Library.

To do that, long-press on the app icon, tap Remove App, then Remove from Home Screen. Now you’ve got a Home Screen full of customized app icons.

Anything else I need to know?

Besides how long it takes to create Shortcuts for every app, there are a few things you should know.

You’ll lose any interactivity features if you replace all your app icons.

That includes the notification bubble that shows unread messages or emails. It also includes any additional menu options you see when you long-press an app icon.

The other thing is that because you’re replacing them with Shortcuts, you’ll see the Shortcuts app open every time you open an app.

You can reduce this annoyance slightly by going into the Accessibility menu and selecting the reduce motion option.

Where can I get free app icons?

You might have seen links advertising iOS app icon packs before.

Etsy is full of them, as are many other websites. Did you know those are just collections of images, usually PNG files?

That means you can make your custom app icons if inclined to.

However, we won’t stop you from downloading icon packs or even paying for them if you like the artist’s work.

Many websites let you download free icons, such as Flaticon or icons8.

Finding a collection that has enough of the apps you use might take a while, and that alone could be worth the price of buying a ready-made collection.

Use new app icons to personalize your iPhone

Once you know how to change your iOS app icons, you can use pretty much any image as a replacement.

If you want something slick, you can find professionally-designed icons online or create your own.

If you want something more personalized, you could snap photos of your friends and attach their mug shots to the apps that best represent them.

2. Tap the Share icon

3. Select Live Photo to save the video to your device

Once you’ve saved the video as a live photo, you can set it as a wallpaper via the Settings app using the standard process.

If your Android phone happens to be a Samsung Galaxy, you’re in luck. You can set a live wallpaper without downloading a third-party app.

Here’s how to set live wallpapers on a Samsung Galaxy phone

1. Launch the Gallery app and select the video you want to use

1. Download and install Video to Wallpaper from the Google Play Store and launch the app

5. Select either Home screen or Home screen and lock screen

That’s it. Your wallpaper is now live. Note that the free version of Video to Wallpaper will only let you save one wallpaper at a time.

You can either delete your wallpaper when you want to set a new one or pay to upgrade the app.

While live wallpapers may be nice to look at—or horrific, depending on the content—they don’t come without a cost.

Continually running a video in the background of your phone can quickly drain your battery and affect overall performance.

If you set a live wallpaper and notice serious battery drain or clunky performance, it may be time to switch back to an antiquated still image and save yourself the trouble.

And this happens more often than you’d think. For instance, this Reddit user explains how his Apple Watch dialed 911 while he was going down a hill.

Apple’s new Crash Detection feature in the iPhone 14 and new Apple Watches alerts emergency services when it thinks you’ve been in an accident.

But it sometimes triggers when users are skiing fast down a mountain.

Crash Detection has a built-in safeguard against false alerts. When your iPhone or Apple Watch detects what it thinks is a crash, you have about 20 seconds to cancel the alert.

However, you likely won’t hear or feel the alert if you’re busy zooming down a mountain. So your device alerts emergency services, leaving you to explain yourself.

This isn’t the first we’ve heard of Apple’s Crash Detection sending out false alerts.

The same issue was recently discovered by theme park customers after a roller coaster ride triggered the crash detection alert.

But it also potentially saved a life in one man’s case. At the end of the day, Crash Detection is an amazing feature. But it could possibly use some tweaking going forward.

How to stop Dynamic Island animations

If animations are causing a distraction, you can stop them in their tracks by swiping left or right across the Dynamic Island.

When you dismiss an activity or alert, you only end the animation, not the task itself. Anything that’s occurring in the background will continue as normal.

When performing multiple tasks, Dynamic Island splits into two segments, one big and one small.

If you want to elevate the smaller task, you can dismiss the larger island by swiping left or right across it. The small island will then expand to take its place.

Can you turn off Dynamic Island?

While you can’t disable Dynamic Island animations completely, you can quickly dismiss them when they occur.

It’s not the ideal solution, but—aside from switching to a different iPhone model—it’s all we’ve got.

Like any new feature, some of us will love Dynamic Island, and some will loathe it. Some may even feel nothing towards it.

Apple isn’t fond of granting us too much control over our tech, so the option to disable Dynamic Island is unlikely to appear.

While the animations can be distracting, it’s still fresh technology, and we haven’t had time to adapt yet.

Used iPhone 13’s are selling for almost as much as new ones

They found that second-hand iPhone 13’s aren’t that different in price from brand-new ones, with the possible exceptions of the iPhone 13 mini and base iPhone 13.

The iPhone 13 Pro and Pro Max started within 10% of their MSRP, even when used. The iPhone 13 started from $640, and the mini from $525. That’s down from $799 and $699, respectively.

Remember, those are the lowest prices that iPhone 13 models were sold on Swappa recently. Actual prices will likely be more and could be substantially more.

In general, iPhones hold their value

Now you know everything you need to about iPhone 13 prices. The cost of buying your iPhone 13 is only half of the equation.

You might also want to know about resale values, which are good with the thriving second-hand market.

The iPhone holds its value better than any Android smartphone, like LG’s ill-fated handsets or the recent Samsung Galaxy S22.

Apple has slowly been transitioning many of its products to USB-C, but what does that mean for current and future iPhones?

So, does the iPhone 14 drop the Lightning port?

Short answer: No

The iPhone 13 kept the Lightning port, and so does the iPhone 14.

That will probably change next year, with the iPhone 15. That’s when analysts believe that Apple will finally replace the Lightning port with a USB-C one.

There are many reasons why Apple could pick this date, from wanting to improve charging or data speeds.

It could also be because the EU has passed a law mandating USB-C on all electronics from the last part of 2024.

That means no more Lightning ports on iPhones, Apple accessories like the Magic Mouse or Apple Pencil, or any third-party accessories.

We’ll have to wait until the iPhone 15 or maybe even the iPhone 16 though for the changes to be finalized.

Apple hasn’t had Touch ID on a non-SE iPhone since 2017. That was when the iPhone X came out, and Face ID became the biometric standard. But what about the iPhone 14? Does it have Touch ID?

The base iPhone 14 still has a hefty notch, with Face ID sensors in full view. The iPhone 14 Pro and Pro Max use the Dynamic island up top with Face ID sensors. But what about a fingerprint sensor for Touch ID?

Apple has been working on an under-screen fingerprint sensor since 2019, so maybe it’s ready for release. Let’s dive in.

So, does the iPhone 14 have a fingerprint sensor?

Short answer: No

Apple’s progress on making an under-screen fingerprint sensor for Touch ID is slower than expected. And it’s not available on any iPhone 14 model.

We’re still unsure if it will arrive on the iPhone 15. A research note from September last year says 2023 might be the year.

We’d love to see an under-screen version of Touch ID, or maybe built into the power button. After all, that’s where it is on the MacBook and some iPads.

After revealing that the iPad mini supported USB-C, it looked like this could finally be the year.

Apple has been adamant about using the Lightning port for years now. But with USB-C becoming a more standard connection, many wondered if Apple was on board with making the USB-C change on the iPhone 13.

So, did they finally make the switch?

Short answer: No

Sadly the iPhone 13 does not offer USB-C support. The iPhone 13 and its four variations come with Apple’s standard Lightning port.

2021 was the year many thought Apple would switch to USB-C for the iPhone.

Even though Apple opted to go for USB-C charging on some products, like the iPad mini, it doesn’t look like the company is quite ready to abandon the Lightning port on the iPhone.

But it does at least look like USB-C charging is on the company’s radar, so maybe the company will opt for that option in next year’s iPhone.

If your device thinks you were in a severe car accident, you will receive a message allowing you to call emergency services quickly.

If your iPhone or Apple Watch doesn’t get a response within 20 seconds, it will automatically alert emergency services of your location.

While this new feature has the potential to save your life, it can also be prone to false alarms.

For activities that cause abrupt stops, such as riding a rollercoaster, you may want to disable this feature to prevent accidentally triggering Crash Detection.

How to turn off Crash Detection

Crash Detection is available on all iPhone 14 models, Apple Watch Series 8, Apple Watch SE 2nd gen, and the Apple Watch Ultra. This feature is on by default but is quickly disabled with a few quick taps.

Turn off Crash Detection on the iPhone

Before you proceed, remember that disabling this feature will prevent the automatic calling of emergency services in the event of a car crash.

Disabling the setting on your iPhone will also disable the feature on the Apple Watch.

Turn off Crash Detection on Apple Watch

If you are going somewhere and decide to leave your iPhone behind, you may want to disable Crash Detection only for your Apple Watch.

1. Open the Watch app

2. Scroll down and select SOS

3. Scroll down and select Crash Detection

4. Toggle off Call after Severe Crash

These steps will only disable Crash Detection for the Apple Watch. If you need to turn the feature off on the iPhone, please follow the steps listed above.

Proceed with caution

Some iPhone features are worth disabling, while others are designed to potentially save your life. You can disable the Crash Detection feature, but you should do so with caution.

If you decide to turn it off temporarily, always remember to enable it after you finish the activity that could have accidentally set it off.

Apple has said that this feature will become better over time. As Apple collects more data from actual accidents and false alarms, it will be able to make this feature more reliable.

Until then, you may want to disable Crash Detection before getting on a rollercoaster.

YouTuber Technological Aesthetics kicked off the project aimed to create a foldable iPhone because Apple hasn’t done one yet.

He says that out of the top seven phone manufacturers, Apple is the only one not to release a foldable yet.

To do this, they started with the screen of an iPhone X. Why? Because that screen is already using a flexible OLED, even if the device Apple put it in doesn’t fold.

We know this screen is flexible because Apple told us. Early promotional videos for the iPhone X show a folded-over OLED display to get the bezel-less look Apple wanted.

The modders went through 37 original iPhone screens before they discovered this. That’s a lot of broken displays, all in search of the perfect foldable.

A foldable iPhone exists, but you can’t buy it

Then they had to figure out which hinge assembly to use. Samsung might be the market leader, but their hinges fold too far for the iPhone X’s OLED.

That led to the Motorola RAZR, which provided a hinge that worked without snapping the screen.

Then it was on to making everything else fit into the two smaller halves of the foldable. The team used a smaller battery, removed wireless charging, and one of the two speakers.

The internal structure was reversed, so the battery is now at the top, with the mainboard at the bottom. Parts were 3D printed to hold the internal hardware lifted from the donor iPhone.

The result is a foldable iPhone that looks closer to the original prototypes for foldable OLED displays than something Apple would put its name on.

The touchscreen works, but iOS wasn’t usable. That left some software modding to do, with split-screen mods similar to the Galaxy Z Flip’s operating system.

The screen started to break down after a few days of actual use. The OLED wasn’t designed for the additional strain. That shows how much design and engineering go into flagship foldables from Samsung and others.

It’s impressive that a group of tinkerers and modders have managed to create a foldable device from an iPhone. The modders encountered issues that any foldable device maker will also face.

We expect that’s why Apple is still working on its own device.

That information comes as part of PayPal’s third-quarter earnings report. The implementation will mean merchants using iPhones won’t need additional hardware such as dongles or readers to take contactless payments.

The important thing here isn’t that Apple’s iPhone can take contactless payments using Tap to Pay. Sure, it’s cool that business owners can take contactless credit, debit, digital wallet, and Apple Pay payments.

What’s important is that, in opening up Tap to Pay to digital wallets such as Venmo and PayPal, Apple is loosening its grip on digital payments on the iPhone.

Digital wallets have been able to use the NFC reader on the iPhone for some time, but this is the first time they could use an Apple service.

You can’t, for example, add PayPal as a payment option in Apple Pay. The story is different on Android, with Google Pay users able to add PayPal as a funding source.

That will change next year, with Apple Wallet users in the U.S. able to add “PayPal and Venmo network-branded credit and debit cards” to their digital wallet.

That’s big news and the first time Apple has let another digital wallet provider into its domain.

You won’t be able to link your PayPal or Venmo directly, however. That should be okay, as you can quickly get a debit card from either service.

The other thing that’s changing is that Apple Pay is coming as an option in PayPal’s checkout solution for online merchants.

While talking about online payments, Venmo is now live as a payment option on Amazon. That’s a limited rollout for now, with Venmo aiming for full U.S. customer support by the end of the year.

The Wall Street Journal got the scoop from Apple’s senior vice president of worldwide marketing, Greg Joswiak. He was asked about the European Union mandate on USB-C as the common charging port.

His response didn’t sound like Apple was happy about the mandate: “Obviously, we’ll have to comply; we have no choice.”

That’s a little sulky from a company whose operating budget is larger than some countries GDP.

Apple confirms to the WSJ that USB-C is coming to the iPhone

The rest of Joswiak’s answer is worth watching. The gist of it is that Apple isn’t happy about being forced to do, well, anything.

He talked about how historically, Apple preferred to trust its engineers instead of being forced into compliance with mandated standards.

His exact words were, “we don’t mind governments telling us what they want to accomplish.” Joswiak obviously thinks highly of Apple, but is that surprising?

Joswiak also mentions that the EU’s plans are well-intentioned but can be somewhat solved by power adapters with detachable cables. But that argument is a bit weak, as well.

Lightning still uses USB2.0 for data transfer, and it doesn’t fast charge, not anywhere near the levels of USB-PD.

Maybe if Apple updates Lightning to have faster charging and data rates, the EU would let them keep the port. But we can’t see that happening on either end.

Apple is the most prominent phone maker still to use a port other than USB-C on its phones. The iPad range finished transitioning to USB-C this fall, and the Mac range has used USB-C for years.

The other thing the EU mandate means for Apple is a shift to USB-C for the AirPods range. The mandate covers every consumer device large enough to fit a USB-C socket.

We expect Apple to comply with the EU mandate. For how long, though, we couldn’t say. Maybe Apple will go all-in on wireless, portless devices in the future.

Clean Energy Charging will learn from you

The new feature also ties into the Optimized Battery Charging feature, which learns your charging habits. That way, your iPhone will still charge normally if it thinks you will take it off the charger.

Apple says it won’t engage the feature if you’re in a new location or anywhere you don’t regularly go. It monitors this through location data on your iPhone.

How do I enable Clean Energy Charging?

That’s it, you’ve now either turned on or confirmed that Clean Energy Charging is enabled on your iPhone.

While your iPhone is on a charger and Clean Energy Charging is on, you’ll see a notification on the lock screen with an estimate of when your phone will be fully charged.

You can long-press this notification and press “Charge Now” to override the feature.

What to do if Clean Energy Charging isn’t working

If you notice Clean Energy Charging isn’t working, Apple has a few suggestions for settings that need to be enabled.

A more sustainable charging option

Now your iPhone will tweak when it charges your device, based on the carbon emission forecast from your local grid. It’s only available in the US, with no word from Apple on when it will get a wider rollout.

We like the option to use greener electricity to recharge our devices, and hope Apple is working on adding the feature to all of its devices.
