Quick Answer: The iPhone with the best camera is the iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max. Apple typically puts its best cameras in the latest iPhones, so that’s the iPhone 14 Pro and 14 Pro Max for now.

The iPhone is known for its awesome camera. Every year, Apple improves them, and they provide consistently good results. But which iPhone has the best camera?

It’s easy to assume that the newest iPhone has the best camera. But is the more expensive Pro version really that much better than the base version?

How much of an improvement does the latest model provide over the previous year’s iPhone?

If you are looking to snag a new iPhone and value camera quality, don’t worry. We’ll explain which iPhone has the best camera and what makes it great.

So, which iPhone has the best camera?

Short answer: The iPhone 14 Pro

Without a doubt, the iPhone with the best camera is the iPhone 14 Pro.

The iPhone 14 Pro and Pro Max are the stars of Apple’s iPhone lineup. And both phones have the same camera, so you can save a little money by purchasing the iPhone 14 Pro instead of the Pro Max.

The camera in the iPhone 14 Pro is a real powerhouse. The triple-lens array is what really accelerates the camera, with standard, ultra-wide, and telephoto configurations.

The 14 Pro and 14 Pro Max feature a 48MP wide-angle camera, a 12MP ultra-wide camera, and a 3X 12MP telephoto lens.

The camera on the iPhone 14 Pro features a macro function that can focus on objects as close as 2 cm away from the lens. The telephoto module has a 3x range, which is the same as the iPhone 13 Pro.

Additionally, the camera’s low-light abilities and night mode have continued to improve. Overall, the iPhone 14 Pro camera system is a decent step up from last year’s iPhone 13 Pro.

While the iPhone 14 Pro Max is technically the best phone that Apple has to offer, it doesn’t include any improvements to the camera.

That means the iPhone 14 Pro offers the best iPhone camera today at a more appealing price than the iPhone 14 Pro Max.

Where is the ‘i’ icon on the Apple Watch and how do you use it? https://knowtechie.com/what-the-i-icon-on-apple-watch-is-and-where-to-find-it/ Wed, 14 Dec 2022 02:44:15 +0000 https://knowtechie.com/?p=198806 The 'i' icon provides information, but it also has functionality. Here's what's to know.

The post Where is the ‘i’ icon on the Apple Watch and how do you use it? appeared first on KnowTechie.

]]>

Quick Answer: The “i” icon appears in the lower-right corner of the Apple Watch during the pairing process. However, the “i” icon appears again in the iPhone’s Watch app anytime you need to unpair it.

What does the “i” icon look like on the Apple Watch? That’s an easy one to answer. You may have seen an “i” icon during the pairing process when setting up your Apple Watch.

Or perhaps you’ve noticed the same symbol in the Watch app on your iPhone.

Wherever the “i” icon appears, you can be fairly certain that tapping it will reveal some sort of information.

What is the ‘i” icon on the Apple Watch, and what does it mean?

In the case of the Apple Watch, the info usually relates to the pairing—or unpairing—process.

Let’s discuss what the “i” icon does and where you can find it on your Apple Watch and iPhone.

How to manually pair the Apple Watch using the “i” icon

If the automatic pairing process isn’t working, you can manually pair your Apple Watch with your iPhone.

The “i” icon is a key part of the process, in the sense that you’ll have to tap the “i” icon on your Apple Watch.

Here’s how to manually pair your Apple Watch

 1. Turn on your Apple Watch and wait for the pairing screen to appearapple watch and iphone pairing screen

 2. Open the Watch app on your iPhone and tap Pair New Watchiphone add watch screen

 3. Tap Set Up for Myselfiphone set up for myself screen for apple watch

 4. When the particles appear on the Apple Watch display, tap the “i” icon to reveal a codeapple watch i icon

 5. On your iPhone, tap Pair Apple Watch Manuallyiphone pair manually screen

 6. Select your Watch when it appears and enter the correct code

If the codes match, the pairing process should be complete, and the union between your two devices will be official.

How to unpair the Apple Watch using the “i” icon

Your Apple Watch isn’t the only place the infamous “i” icon appears.

If you ever need to unpair your device, you’ll need to locate the same symbol within the Watch app on your iPhone.

Here’s how to unpair your Apple Watch:

 1. Open the Watch app on your iPhone
 1. Go to My Watch and tap All Watches
apple watch app home screen
Image: KnowTechie
 1. Tap the “i” icon beside the watch you want to unpair
iphone apple watch app i icon
Image: KnowTechie
 1. Tap Unpair Apple Watch and tap again to confirm
iphone apple watch unpair screens
Image: KnowTechie

You have now successfully unpaired your Apple Watch. Enjoy a life free of constant wrist notifications.

⚠ One important thing to remember when unpairing your Apple Watch is that it will erase all data and settings from the watch, so back up any important information before unpairing.

ℹ Another thing to keep in mind is that unpairing your Apple Watch will not automatically cancel any subscriptions or services associated with it, such as Apple Music or cellular service.

Information leads to understanding

Universally—at least in the English language—“i” symbolizes info. Information appears when you tap the icon on your Apple Watch or iPhone. So far, the concept makes sense.

But until you tap the icon, you don’t know what type of information you’ll get.

And sometimes, additional menu options, such as the unpair option in the Watch app, are mixed in with the info. It’s like a lucky dip with boring prizes.

In most cases, tapping an unknown “i” icon is a relatively harmless affair.

Therefore, if you’re the curious type, you can safely tap every “i” in your path, and the worst that can happen is information overload.

What are RAW photos and how to shoot them https://knowtechie.com/what-are-the-benefits-of-raw-photos-and-how-to-shoot-them/ Thu, 08 Dec 2022 16:26:00 +0000 https://knowtechie.com/?p=192017 If you want full control over your photos, shooting them in RAW is the way to go.

The post What are RAW photos and how to shoot them appeared first on KnowTechie.

RAW photos are exactly what the name implies: unprocessed images.

The advantage of shooting RAW photos is that the photographs contain a large amount of information, which provides more freedom and better results when editing and converting files.

Due to a lack of compression, RAW images can get quite large, taking up a lot of space on your device or SD card. Therefore, you should only consider using the format if you plan to do some serious editing.

When you save photos in other formats, you lose the ability to make meaningful adjustments to attributes such as color, exposure, and sharpness.

But because RAW files contain uncompressed information direct from your camera sensor, you can manipulate the uncooked images and achieve the desired results.

Not all smartphones are capable of taking RAW photos. If the option is missing from your device and you want to go RAW, you may need to consider upgrading or purchasing a digital camera.

Let’s discuss how to shoot RAW photos with a compatible Samsung, Google, and Apple phone.

How to shoot RAW photos on Samsung

Here’s how to shoot RAW photos on a Samsung phone:

 1. Launch the Camera app and tap the Settings (gear) iconsamsung camera screen

 2. Tap Save options/Picture formats under Picturessamsung camera settings page with picture mode, selfies, and more

 3. Toggle on Save RAW copiespicture format camera settings on samsung smartphone

 4. Go back to the camera viewer and tap More > Propro camera option screen on samsung phone

To take RAW photos, you must be in Pro mode. Also, saved images will appear in the usual location, which should be the Gallery app unless otherwise specified.

How to shoot RAW photos on Google Pixel

Here’s how to shoot RAW photos on a Google Pixel:

 1. Launch the Camera app and tap the Settings (gear) icon

As a note: Before taking a photo, you may need to tap the Settings (gear) icon and select RAW beside RAW+JPEG.

How to shoot RAW photos on iPhone

Here’s how to shoot RAW photos on an Apple iPhone:

 1. Go to Settings > Camera

 1. Then, tap Formats

 1. Toggle on Apple ProRAW under Photo Capture

Image: KnowTechie
 1. Launch the Camera app, tap the RAW button, and take a photo

And there you go. That’s how you take iPhone pictures in RAW format.

Should you take photos in RAW format?

Going RAW probably isn’t worth the storage space if you’re a casual photographer and aren’t doing any serious editing.

You can still edit images saved in other formats, and most people won’t notice or care that your social media post of a salad went direct to JPEG.

If, however, you’d prefer to work with photographs in a more natural state, the benefits of RAW photos may be worth the effort.

This simple iPhone trick gives you better volume control https://knowtechie.com/this-simple-iphone-trick-gives-you-better-volume-control/ Tue, 06 Dec 2022 14:30:33 +0000 https://knowtechie.com/?p=260503 I didn't know this was a thing, and I've been using an iPhone for years.

The post This simple iPhone trick gives you better volume control appeared first on KnowTechie.

Did you know that the iPhone volume animation isn’t just for show?

Apple rarely does anything visual without it having some type of functionality. The on-screen volume indicator is no exception, and you can interact with it to adjust the volume.

I’ve written about Apple for years and been a full-time iPhone user for the last few — and I didn’t know this existed. I never thought to tap on the animation that came up.

Sure, my fingers were already tapping the volume buttons, so moving them never occurred to me.

Apple introduced this feature when iOS 13 released. That was three years ago, and how many people bothered to read the 800+ page instruction manual for their iPhone?

Here’s how to use this hidden-in-plain-sight iPhone feature.

You can interact with the iPhone on-screen volume animation

This trick works on any iPhone, iPad, or iPod Touch.

 1. Press one of the physical volume buttons on the side of your iPhoneiphone volume controls

 2. When the volume indicator appears, slide your finger on it to change the volume level

That’s it; now you can control the volume with the same control level as the Control Center slider.

Unless you have an iPhone 14 Pro or iPhone 14 Pro Max. The iPhone volume slider still works on the lock screen on those handsets but not on the home screen.

That’s because Apple shifted the volume animation to Dynamic Island on those devices. You can’t interact with the volume animation when it’s in that area.

Maybe Apple will realize that we like using this feature and make it interactable on Dynamic Island.

The post How to measure someone’s height on iPhone appeared first on KnowTechie.

Did you know that LiDAR-equipped iPhones can be used to measure someone’s height?

That’s right, no more having to get squirmy toddlers to stand in one place while you use a ruler to mark the wall. The inbuilt Measure app on iOS is all you need.

You can also use it to measure rectangular objects, like packages you want to mail. The LiDAR sensor even enables an augmented reality ruler, so you are never far from a measuring tool.

Here’s how to use your iPhone to measure someone’s height

To start, you’ll need one of the following iPhones: iPhone 12 Pro, iPhone 12 Pro Max, iPhone 13 Pro, iPhone 13 Pro Max, iPhone 14 Pro, or iPhone 14 Pro Max.

Once you have confirmed your iPhone has the feature, follow along below:

 1. Open the Measure app on your iPhonescreenshot of ios measure app icon

 2. Point the camera at the person you want to measurescreenshot of ios measure app measuring a person's height

There are a few things to keep in mind. Measuring someone’s height seems to only work in portrait orientation.

The person needs to be fully in frame. The image above gives you a good idea of how to place them. You also will need to keep pointing the camera at them for a few seconds.

The app does all the heavy lifting for you. Once it determines it is looking at a person, a white dotted line appears next to the head.

That line slowly scrolls up until it’s at the top of their head, hair, or hat and goes solid when it reaches the final measurement. You can also measure people when they’re sitting down, although this seems less useful.

Your iPhone has all kinds of features like this that you might not know about. We’ll keep surfacing more, so you can fully take advantage of all the tools and tricks that Apple has built-in.

How to connect JBL speakers to iPhone? https://knowtechie.com/how-to-connect-jbl-speakers-to-iphone/ Sun, 04 Dec 2022 22:23:16 +0000 https://knowtechie.com/?p=188282 Follow the step-by-step instructions below to connect your iPhone to a JBL speaker without any hassle

The post How to connect JBL speakers to iPhone? appeared first on KnowTechie.

]]>

Quick Answer: To connect JBL speakers to an iPhone, you can use Bluetooth or a wired connection. With Bluetooth turned on the JBL speaker and iPhone, wait for your JBL speakers to appear on your iPhone’s list of available devices. Then tap on the JBL speaker’s name to connect to your iPhone.

Like most Apple users, you probably regularly use your iPhone to listen to music.

But what if you could take that listening experience to a new level by connecting your iPhone to a high-quality JBL speaker?

Not only would the sound be louder and more immersive, but it would also be richer and more nuanced.

Siri integration is another plus feature, but it is only available for the latest JBL speakers in Xtreme, Pulse, Charge, and Flip lineup.

You can ask Siri to play your favorite song, turn up the volume, or skip to the next track.

Now that you know the benefits of connecting your iPhone to a JBL speaker, let’s get down to the basics of how to do it.

Pairing a JBL speaker with an iPhone

iphone bluetooth setting
Image: KnowTechie

Both JBL and Apple hate 3.5mm aux outputs. The lightning port transmits power and audio from iPhone 7 to the latest iPhone 14.

Likewise, most JBL speakers have Bluetooth as the only option for connectivity.

The company has an app (JBL Portable) for both IOS and Android devices that covers all its speakers except for some low-end sonic boxes in JBL Go and Clip Series.

Though useful for firmware updates and setting up different modes in a multi-speaker setup, the app isn’t necessary to pair JBL speakers with iPhones and, in general, any other device.

How to easily connect your JBL speaker to iPhone via Bluetooth: Step-by-step

Here, we’ll show you how to pair the JBL Flip 4 with the iPhone 14.

As Bluetooth is involved here, the steps remain the same, whether it’s for an old JBL Clip 2 or the latest Boombox 2.

How to pair JBL speakers to iPhone

 1. Make sure that both devices are close to each other.

 2. Press the ‘power button‘ once to turn on the JBL Flip 4. A solid white light will appear on the ‘power icon’ immediately, followed by an audio cue.How to connect JBL speakers to iPhone

 3. Press the ‘Bluetooth Button’ for 2-3 seconds to enter pairing mode, indicated by a blinking blue light.Picture of a JBL speaker on a purple background / How to connect JBL speakers to iPhone?

 4. On your iPhone, go to Settings, tap on ‘Bluetooth,’ and toggle on the switch.iphone settings for pairing bluetooth How to connect JBL speakers to iPhone?

 5. In the ‘Other Devices’ section, the speaker’s name will appear as ‘JBL Flip 4’. Tap on the name and wait for a few seconds.iphone bluetooth settings How to connect JBL speakers to iPhone?

 6. The two devices will now pair, and you can listen to music on your JBL speakers using your iPhone.

Connecting JBL speakers to iPhone via an AUX cable

You can connect your iPhone to the JBL speaker with a 3.5mm audio cable if you want a wired connection.

Just plug one end of the cable into the iPhone’s headphone jack adapter and the other end into the JBL speaker aux input.

FAQs

If none of these steps aren’t helping you pair your JBL speaker to your iPhone, there may be a problem. Here are some troubleshooting questions in the FAQ section below.

Why can’t I connect my JBL speaker to my iPhone?

If you recently connected your speaker to a device, it will automatically connect to that device when you turn it on. A stable blue light is an indicator of this.

You will have to unpair your JBL speaker first or override the previous pairing by pressing the Bluetooth button for almost 3-5 seconds.

The speaker will now enter pairing mode, and you can easily connect it to the iPhone.

READ MORE: JBL speaker won’t connect? Here’s how to fix that

If those steps don’t work, it may be because your JBL speaker is out of range or has a low battery. And if this isn’t the case, the only option you have left is to reset the speaker to its factory settings.

Is JBL compatible with the iPhone?

Yes, your JBL Bluetooth speaker is compatible with the iPhone. Apart from playing music, you can make calls and summon Siri with most JBL speakers.

How can I connect multiple JBL portable speakers to my iPhone?

You will start by connecting the primary JBL speaker with the iPhone.

Next, you will have to press the connect button on both the primary and secondary JBL speakers together. You can build a chain of almost 100 speakers this way.

Connecting JBL speakers to iPhone is pretty straightforward

JBL speakers are one of the best third-party accessories to pair up with your iPhone. These speakers are Bluetooth-enabled and have Siri capabilities to boot.

This post provides an easy step-by-step guide on connecting your JBL speakers to your iPhone. Regardless of which model you choose, the steps remain the same.

Quick Answer: The easiest way to change app icons on iPhone is via the Shortcuts app. You can easily change icons for any app, but it’s time-consuming if you have many a lot of icons to customize. Plus, you’ll lose any interactivity features like notifications.

The iPhone is one of the most popular smartphones in the world. That’s despite Apple not letting you change your iPhone app icons.

Changing app icons is something I imagine would be easy for Apple to figure out, development-wise.

And maybe they did and have a good reason why they never let folks swap out their app icons.

Thankfully, that changed slightly with iOS 14.

Why would someone need to change their iPhone’s app icons?

Perhaps you don’t like the look of one particular icon. Maybe there are a few that deserve changing.

Or perhaps all of the default icons sicken you to your core. Whatever your level of loathing, Apple’s Shortcuts app is the solution.

This article will show you everything you need to know to customize iPhone app icons on iOS.

How to change app icons on iPhone

If you are ready to make your iPhone your own, it’s time to dive in.

⏱ Before we start, heads up: this can be time-consuming, so buckle up. And if you can’t commit the time now, feel free to bookmark this page and return later.

How to customize app icons on iPhone

 10. Tap Add to complete the processios shortcuts complete

Once you hit Add, the Shortcuts app will close automatically and take you to your home screen, where the new icon should appear.

From here, you’re free to move the shortcut to wherever you want it to be.

To avoid confusion, remove the original app from the Home Screen so it’ll only be in the App Library.

To do that, long-press on the app icon, tap Remove App, then Remove from Home Screen. Now you’ve got a Home Screen full of customized app icons.

Anything else I need to know?

Besides how long it takes to create Shortcuts for every app, there are a few things you should know.

You’ll lose any interactivity features if you replace all your app icons.

READ MORE: How to fix an iPhone not receiving texts from Android phones

That includes the notification bubble that shows unread messages or emails. It also includes any additional menu options you see when you long-press an app icon.

The other thing is that because you’re replacing them with Shortcuts, you’ll see the Shortcuts app open every time you open an app.

You can reduce this annoyance slightly by going into the Accessibility menu and selecting the reduce motion option.

Where can I get free app icons?

iphone app icons from flaticon
Image: Flaticon

You might have seen links advertising iOS app icon packs before.

Etsy is full of them, as are many other websites. Did you know those are just collections of images, usually PNG files?

That means you can make your custom app icons if inclined to.

However, we won’t stop you from downloading icon packs or even paying for them if you like the artist’s work.

Many websites let you download free icons, such as Flaticon or icons8.

Finding a collection that has enough of the apps you use might take a while, and that alone could be worth the price of buying a ready-made collection.

Use new app icons to personalize your iPhone

Once you know how to change your iOS app icons, you can use pretty much any image as a replacement.

If you want something slick, you can find professionally-designed icons online or create your own.

If you want something more personalized, you could snap photos of your friends and attach their mug shots to the apps that best represent them.

When you look at your phone, one of the first things you see is your wallpaper. So, you might as well choose something visually appealing, right?

Some people prefer simple, unobtrusive backgrounds, while others opt for photos of pets, family members, or celebrities.

But the image is a dying medium. Now, it’s all about video.

If you consider yourself a bit of a modernist—or just like looking at cool stuff—you can ditch that old-still background and set live wallpapers on your iPhone or Android device.

If you’re using a non-Samsung phone, you’ll need to get a third-party app involved to create a live wallpaper.

Luckily, you have several solutions to choose from. While the process varies between apps, the basic idea is the same.

For example, here’s how to set a live wallpaper using ‘Video to Wallpaper’ for Android:

 1. Download and install Video to Wallpaper from the Google Play Store and launch the app
 1. Tap the Plus (+) button to add a new wallpaper
Video to Wallpaper with arrow pointing to plus tab
Image: KnowTechie
 1. Tap Choose, select the video you want to convert, rename if necessary, and tap OK
Video to Wallpaper with arrow pointing to Choose tab then to OK tab

 1. Tap the wallpaper you want to use and tap Set wallpaper
Video to Wallpaper with arrow pointing to Set Wallpaper
Image: KnowTechie
 1. Select either Home screen or Home screen and lock screen
Video to Wallpaper with arrow pointing to Home screen
Image: KnowTechie

That’s it. Your wallpaper is now live. Note that the free version of Video to Wallpaper will only let you save one wallpaper at a time.

You can either delete your wallpaper when you want to set a new one or pay to upgrade the app.

While Video to Wallpaper is super simple to use, other free apps may offer more freedom and flexibility.

What are the downsides of using live wallpapers?

While live wallpapers may be nice to look at—or horrific, depending on the content—they don’t come without a cost.

Continually running a video in the background of your phone can quickly drain your battery and affect overall performance.

If you set a live wallpaper and notice serious battery drain or clunky performance, it may be time to switch back to an antiquated still image and save yourself the trouble.

A recent report from KSL explains how Apple’s new Crash Detection feature triggers unwanted 911 calls.

Dispatchers in Summit County, Utah, have received an influx of Crash Detection calls, but most aren’t related to car accidents.

Instead, the alert goes off while people are skiing at nearby ski resorts. And many of these Crash Detection alerts come when a skiing accident hasn’t even occurred.

And this happens more often than you’d think. For instance, this Reddit user explains how his Apple Watch dialed 911 while he was going down a hill.

Apple’s new Crash Detection feature in the iPhone 14 and new Apple Watches alerts emergency services when it thinks you’ve been in an accident.

But it sometimes triggers when users are skiing fast down a mountain.

Crash Detection has a built-in safeguard against false alerts. When your iPhone or Apple Watch detects what it thinks is a crash, you have about 20 seconds to cancel the alert.

However, you likely won’t hear or feel the alert if you’re busy zooming down a mountain. So your device alerts emergency services, leaving you to explain yourself.

This isn’t the first we’ve heard of Apple’s Crash Detection sending out false alerts.

The same issue was recently discovered by theme park customers after a roller coaster ride triggered the crash detection alert.

But it also potentially saved a life in one man’s case. At the end of the day, Crash Detection is an amazing feature. But it could possibly use some tweaking going forward.

Crash Detection is available on the new iPhone 14 and the Apple Watch Series 8, Apple Watch Ultra, and the new Apple Watch SE.

The post How to turn off Dynamic Island animations on iPhone appeared first on KnowTechie.

]]>

Quick Answer: While you can’t disable Dynamic Island animations completely, you can quickly dismiss them when they occur. Swipe left or right on the island, and it should disappear.

Apple’s Dynamic Island — an on-screen overlay that hides your phone’s front camera hardware — is currently unique to the iPhone 14 Pro and Pro Max.

The pill-shaped box shows alerts and information about in-progress activities, such as phone calls, on your device.

Dynamic Island is a creative way to conceal hardware without resorting to the not-so-attractive notch of the past. Take a look at the video below if you’re unfamiliar:

However, not everyone will be ready to embrace the new overlays. Perhaps you don’t want animations distracting you every time something is happening on your phone.

Unfortunately, you can’t completely disable Dynamic Island, but you can dismiss animations with a quick flick of your finger.

At this stage, dismissal is the best—and only—option. Let’s discuss how to turn off Dynamic Island animations on the iPhone 14 Pro and Pro Max.

How to stop Dynamic Island animations

swiping motion on iphone 14 dynamic island
Image: KnowTechie

If animations are causing a distraction, you can stop them in their tracks by swiping left or right across the Dynamic Island.

When you dismiss an activity or alert, you only end the animation, not the task itself. Anything that’s occurring in the background will continue as normal.

When performing multiple tasks, Dynamic Island splits into two segments, one big and one small.

If you want to elevate the smaller task, you can dismiss the larger island by swiping left or right across it. The small island will then expand to take its place.

Can you turn off Dynamic Island?

While you can’t disable Dynamic Island animations completely, you can quickly dismiss them when they occur.

It’s not the ideal solution, but—aside from switching to a different iPhone model—it’s all we’ve got.

Image: KnowTechie

Like any new feature, some of us will love Dynamic Island, and some will loathe it. Some may even feel nothing towards it.

Apple isn’t fond of granting us too much control over our tech, so the option to disable Dynamic Island is unlikely to appear.

While the animations can be distracting, it’s still fresh technology, and we haven’t had time to adapt yet.

Besides, some people were utterly disgusted by the notches of yore, so an overactive island may be the more attractive solution.

How much does the iPhone 13 cost? https://knowtechie.com/how-much-does-the-iphone-13-cost/ Wed, 23 Nov 2022 02:25:15 +0000 https://knowtechie.com/?p=162140 The iPhone 13 comes in four different models with a variety of storage options and prices.

The post How much does the iPhone 13 cost? appeared first on KnowTechie.

]]>

Quick Answer: The iPhone 13 starts at $699. The smaller iPhone 13 mini costs $599. In addition, the iPhone 13 Pro retails at $999, while the iPhone 13 Pro Max launched with a $1,099 price tag.

Apple’s iPhone 13 is still going strong nearly a year after its launch. With multiple models and options available, just how much is the iPhone 13?

The current iPhone is bigger and better than ever, with an upgraded camera and longer battery life.

This time, Apple opted for a base storage size of 128 GB, so you shouldn’t worry about storage space. And the Pro versions have a 1 TB storage option.

The iPhone 13 saw a minor redesign, with a 20% smaller notch to give you even more screen room than before.

There are four different versions, starting with the iPhone 13 mini and the iPhone 13, which only really differ in size.

Then, the 13 Pro and Pro Max, Apple’s top-of-the-line iPhones, take the flagship device to the next level.

That adds another question – how much do the iPhone 13 Pro and Pro Max cost? Regardless of the phone you want, we’ve got you covered.

How much does an iPhone 13 cost?

Image: KnowTechie

The iPhone 13 starts at a relatively modest price of $699 for the 128GB model. If you prefer a smaller iPhone, the iPhone mini starts at $599. But you’ll want to grab a mini while they still exist.

The iPhone 14 range is doing away with the 5.4-inch screen completely.

However, the price rises steadily as you add more storage. Let’s first take a look at the 5.4-inch display mini and the standard 6.1 inches iPhone 13:

iPhone 13 prices

iPhone 13 mini PricesiPhone 13 Prices
128GB – $599128GB – $699
256GB – $699256GB – $799
512GB – $899512GB – $999

That covers the cheaper versions of the iPhone 13. Now, let’s move on to the more premium option.

How much is the iPhone 13 Pro?

Now, we’ll take a look at the current Pro models. As usual, the big upgrade with the Pro models is in the cameras, and this year’s cameras are loaded with new software and features.

The iPhone 13 Pro keeps the same 6.1-inch display, while the Pro Max has a larger 6.7-inch display.

512GB – $1,299512GB – $1,399
1TB – $1,4991TB – $1,599

So, how much does an iPhone 13 pro cost? As you can see, the current iPhone lineup has a device for just about anyone. There are a bunch of iPhone 13 options, from small to giant screens.

Whether you’re just looking for a new phone that will get the job done efficiently or you’re in the market for a top-of-the-line smartphone with enough storage for generations, there’s probably an iPhone 13 that’ll work for you.

iPhone 13 resale value – how much is a used iPhone 13?

Maybe you think the iPhone 13 will have some deals on the secondary market. After all, the iPhone 14 is nearly here, and people will want to sell their old devices to raise cash.

Well, popular tech marketplace Swappa did some digging through its databases, and the results are interesting.

Used iPhone 13’s are selling for almost as much as new ones

They found that second-hand iPhone 13’s aren’t that different in price from brand-new ones, with the possible exceptions of the iPhone 13 mini and base iPhone 13.

The iPhone 13 Pro and Pro Max started within 10% of their MSRP, even when used. The iPhone 13 started from $640, and the mini from $525. That’s down from $799 and $699, respectively.

Remember, those are the lowest prices that iPhone 13 models were sold on Swappa recently. Actual prices will likely be more and could be substantially more.

In general, iPhones hold their value

Now you know everything you need to about iPhone 13 prices. The cost of buying your iPhone 13 is only half of the equation.

You might also want to know about resale values, which are good with the thriving second-hand market.

The iPhone holds its value better than any Android smartphone, like LG’s ill-fated handsets or the recent Samsung Galaxy S22.

If you’re not in any hurry, you might want to wait and see what the launch of the iPhone 14 range does to pricing.

Not just for the new handsets, as those will be expensive. You might score some deals on the cost of an iPhone 13.

Does the iPhone 14 have USB-C? https://knowtechie.com/will-the-iphone-14-have-usb-c/ Mon, 21 Nov 2022 20:23:00 +0000 https://knowtechie.com/?p=214268 Does Apple drop the Lightning port on the latest iPhone?

The post Does the iPhone 14 have USB-C? appeared first on KnowTechie.

]]>

Quick answer: No, the iPhone 14 does not use USB-C. Expect that to potentially come with the iPhone 15, however.

Apple’s iPhone 14 is now available. With upcoming regulations in place, does Apple’s new smartphone line use USB-C for charging?

Apple has slowly been transitioning many of its products to USB-C, but what does that mean for current and future iPhones?

Here’s what to know about USB-C charging on iPhone 14 models and beyond.

So, does the iPhone 14 drop the Lightning port?

Short answer: No

The iPhone 13 kept the Lightning port, and so does the iPhone 14.

That will probably change next year, with the iPhone 15. That’s when analysts believe that Apple will finally replace the Lightning port with a USB-C one.

READ MORE: Should you buy the iPhone 14?

There are many reasons why Apple could pick this date, from wanting to improve charging or data speeds.

It could also be because the EU has passed a law mandating USB-C on all electronics from the last part of 2024.

That means no more Lightning ports on iPhones, Apple accessories like the Magic Mouse or Apple Pencil, or any third-party accessories.

We’ll have to wait until the iPhone 15 or maybe even the iPhone 16 though for the changes to be finalized.

Does the iPhone 14 have Touch ID? https://knowtechie.com/will-the-iphone-14-have-touch-id/ Mon, 21 Nov 2022 15:09:00 +0000 https://knowtechie.com/?p=215097 Apple has been working on an under-screen fingerprint sensor since 2019.

The post Does the iPhone 14 have Touch ID? appeared first on KnowTechie.

]]>

Quick answer: No, the iPhone 14 does not have Touch ID. It’s possible an under-screen version will come with the iPhone 15.

Apple hasn’t had Touch ID on a non-SE iPhone since 2017. That was when the iPhone X came out, and Face ID became the biometric standard. But what about the iPhone 14? Does it have Touch ID?

The base iPhone 14 still has a hefty notch, with Face ID sensors in full view. The iPhone 14 Pro and Pro Max use the Dynamic island up top with Face ID sensors. But what about a fingerprint sensor for Touch ID?

Apple has been working on an under-screen fingerprint sensor since 2019, so maybe it’s ready for release. Let’s dive in.

So, does the iPhone 14 have a fingerprint sensor?

Short answer: No

Apple’s progress on making an under-screen fingerprint sensor for Touch ID is slower than expected. And it’s not available on any iPhone 14 model.

We’re still unsure if it will arrive on the iPhone 15. A research note from September last year says 2023 might be the year.

We’d love to see an under-screen version of Touch ID, or maybe built into the power button. After all, that’s where it is on the MacBook and some iPads.

The post Does the iPhone 13 have a USB-C port? appeared first on KnowTechie.

Quick Answer: No, the iPhone 13 does not offer USB-C support. The iPhone 13 and its four variations come with Apple’s standard Lightning port.

The iPhone 13 has been around since 2021, introducing exciting new changes to Apple’s flagship device. We’re talking the usual stuff: A better camera, battery life, and faster performance.

But iPhone fans have wondered if another potential change was coming to this version: Does it finally have a USB-C port for charging?

After revealing that the iPad mini supported USB-C, it looked like this could finally be the year.

usb-c cables on purple background
Image: KnowTechie

Apple has been adamant about using the Lightning port for years now. But with USB-C becoming a more standard connection, many wondered if Apple was on board with making the USB-C change on the iPhone 13.

So, did they finally make the switch?

Does the iPhone 13 have a USB-C port?

Short answer: No

Sadly the iPhone 13 does not offer USB-C support. The iPhone 13 and its four variations come with Apple’s standard Lightning port.

2021 was the year many thought Apple would switch to USB-C for the iPhone.

Even though Apple opted to go for USB-C charging on some products, like the iPad mini, it doesn’t look like the company is quite ready to abandon the Lightning port on the iPhone.

But it does at least look like USB-C charging is on the company’s radar, so maybe the company will opt for that option in next year’s iPhone.

The post How to disable Crash Detection on iPhone appeared first on KnowTechie.

]]>
Crash Detection is a potentially life-saving safety feature for the iPhone and Apple Watch.

If your device thinks you were in a severe car accident, you will receive a message allowing you to call emergency services quickly.

If your iPhone or Apple Watch doesn’t get a response within 20 seconds, it will automatically alert emergency services of your location.

While this new feature has the potential to save your life, it can also be prone to false alarms.

For activities that cause abrupt stops, such as riding a rollercoaster, you may want to disable this feature to prevent accidentally triggering Crash Detection.

How to turn off Crash Detection

Crash Detection is available on all iPhone 14 models, Apple Watch Series 8, Apple Watch SE 2nd gen, and the Apple Watch Ultra. This feature is on by default but is quickly disabled with a few quick taps.

Turn off Crash Detection on the iPhone

Before you proceed, remember that disabling this feature will prevent the automatic calling of emergency services in the event of a car crash.

 1. Open the Settings appiPhone with arrow pointing to settings

 2. Scroll down to Emergency SOS

These steps will only disable Crash Detection for the Apple Watch. If you need to turn the feature off on the iPhone, please follow the steps listed above.

Proceed with caution

Some iPhone features are worth disabling, while others are designed to potentially save your life. You can disable the Crash Detection feature, but you should do so with caution.

If you decide to turn it off temporarily, always remember to enable it after you finish the activity that could have accidentally set it off.

Apple has said that this feature will become better over time. As Apple collects more data from actual accidents and false alarms, it will be able to make this feature more reliable.

Until then, you may want to disable Crash Detection before getting on a rollercoaster.

The post Modders in China have unveiled their own foldable iPhone appeared first on KnowTechie.

]]>
A group of phone modders in China have created the first foldable iPhone.

YouTuber Technological Aesthetics kicked off the project aimed to create a foldable iPhone because Apple hasn’t done one yet.

He says that out of the top seven phone manufacturers, Apple is the only one not to release a foldable yet.

To do this, they started with the screen of an iPhone X. Why? Because that screen is already using a flexible OLED, even if the device Apple put it in doesn’t fold.

We know this screen is flexible because Apple told us. Early promotional videos for the iPhone X show a folded-over OLED display to get the bezel-less look Apple wanted.

The modders went through 37 original iPhone screens before they discovered this. That’s a lot of broken displays, all in search of the perfect foldable.

A foldable iPhone exists, but you can’t buy it

Then they had to figure out which hinge assembly to use. Samsung might be the market leader, but their hinges fold too far for the iPhone X’s OLED.

That led to the Motorola RAZR, which provided a hinge that worked without snapping the screen.

Then it was on to making everything else fit into the two smaller halves of the foldable. The team used a smaller battery, removed wireless charging, and one of the two speakers.

The internal structure was reversed, so the battery is now at the top, with the mainboard at the bottom. Parts were 3D printed to hold the internal hardware lifted from the donor iPhone.

The result is a foldable iPhone that looks closer to the original prototypes for foldable OLED displays than something Apple would put its name on.

Image: YouTube

The touchscreen works, but iOS wasn’t usable. That left some software modding to do, with split-screen mods similar to the Galaxy Z Flip’s operating system.

The screen started to break down after a few days of actual use. The OLED wasn’t designed for the additional strain. That shows how much design and engineering go into flagship foldables from Samsung and others.

It’s impressive that a group of tinkerers and modders have managed to create a foldable device from an iPhone. The modders encountered issues that any foldable device maker will also face.

We expect that’s why Apple is still working on its own device.

The post Tap to Pay on iPhone will soon work with PayPal and Venmo appeared first on KnowTechie.

]]>
Apple’s Tap to Pay functionality is about to get support in the PayPal and Venmo iPhone apps.

That information comes as part of PayPal’s third-quarter earnings report. The implementation will mean merchants using iPhones won’t need additional hardware such as dongles or readers to take contactless payments.

The important thing here isn’t that Apple’s iPhone can take contactless payments using Tap to Pay. Sure, it’s cool that business owners can take contactless credit, debit, digital wallet, and Apple Pay payments.

What’s important is that, in opening up Tap to Pay to digital wallets such as Venmo and PayPal, Apple is loosening its grip on digital payments on the iPhone.

Digital wallets have been able to use the NFC reader on the iPhone for some time, but this is the first time they could use an Apple service.

Tap to Pay on iPhone will provide businesses with a secure, private, and easy way to accept contactless payments and unlock new checkout experiences using the power, security, and convenience of iPhone,” said Vice President of Apple Pay and Apple Wallet Jennifer Bailey in the company’s release.

You can’t, for example, add PayPal as a payment option in Apple Pay. The story is different on Android, with Google Pay users able to add PayPal as a funding source.

That will change next year, with Apple Wallet users in the U.S. able to add “PayPal and Venmo network-branded credit and debit cards” to their digital wallet.

That’s big news and the first time Apple has let another digital wallet provider into its domain.

You won’t be able to link your PayPal or Venmo directly, however. That should be okay, as you can quickly get a debit card from either service.

The other thing that’s changing is that Apple Pay is coming as an option in PayPal’s checkout solution for online merchants.

While talking about online payments, Venmo is now live as a payment option on Amazon. That’s a limited rollout for now, with Venmo aiming for full U.S. customer support by the end of the year.

USB-C is officially coming to the iPhone https://knowtechie.com/usb-c-officially-coming-to-iphone/ Wed, 26 Oct 2022 14:06:10 +0000 https://knowtechie.com/?p=251586 Apple wants you to know it isn't happy about the decision, however.

The post USB-C is officially coming to the iPhone appeared first on KnowTechie.

]]>
Apple has given its first public confirmation that the iPhone will get USB-C in the future.

The Wall Street Journal got the scoop from Apple’s senior vice president of worldwide marketing, Greg Joswiak. He was asked about the European Union mandate on USB-C as the common charging port.

His response didn’t sound like Apple was happy about the mandate: “Obviously, we’ll have to comply; we have no choice.”

That’s a little sulky from a company whose operating budget is larger than some countries GDP.

Apple confirms to the WSJ that USB-C is coming to the iPhone

The rest of Joswiak’s answer is worth watching. The gist of it is that Apple isn’t happy about being forced to do, well, anything.

He talked about how historically, Apple preferred to trust its engineers instead of being forced into compliance with mandated standards.

His exact words were, “we don’t mind governments telling us what they want to accomplish.” Joswiak obviously thinks highly of Apple, but is that surprising?

usb-c cables on purple background
Image: KnowTechie

Joswiak also mentions that the EU’s plans are well-intentioned but can be somewhat solved by power adapters with detachable cables. But that argument is a bit weak, as well.

Lightning still uses USB2.0 for data transfer, and it doesn’t fast charge, not anywhere near the levels of USB-PD.

Maybe if Apple updates Lightning to have faster charging and data rates, the EU would let them keep the port. But we can’t see that happening on either end.

Apple is the most prominent phone maker still to use a port other than USB-C on its phones. The iPad range finished transitioning to USB-C this fall, and the Mac range has used USB-C for years.

The other thing the EU mandate means for Apple is a shift to USB-C for the AirPods range. The mandate covers every consumer device large enough to fit a USB-C socket.

We expect Apple to comply with the EU mandate. For how long, though, we couldn’t say. Maybe Apple will go all-in on wireless, portless devices in the future.

The post iPhone Clean Energy Charging: what is it and how does it work? appeared first on KnowTechie.

]]>
iPhone users now have a more sustainable charging option with iOS 16.1’s Clean Energy Charging.

This new feature waits to charge your iPhone to those times when lower carbon-emission electricity is available. This is done with a forecast of the carbon emissions from your local energy grid.

But, that’s not all it can do. So let’s dive into the feature a bit more and discuss how you can enable it on your own iPhone.

Clean Energy Charging will learn from you

iphone clean energy feature
Image: KnowTechie

The new feature also ties into the Optimized Battery Charging feature, which learns your charging habits. That way, your iPhone will still charge normally if it thinks you will take it off the charger.

Apple says it won’t engage the feature if you’re in a new location or anywhere you don’t regularly go. It monitors this through location data on your iPhone.

How do I enable Clean Energy Charging?

Once your iPhone is updated to iOS 16.1, Clean Energy Charging should be on by default. However, it’s only available for users in the United States at this time.

 1. Open Settingsios settings app

 2. Tap on Batteryscreenshot of ios settings

 3. Tap on Battery Health & Chargingscreenshot of ios battery settings

 4. Toggle Optimized Battery Charging to onscreenshot of ios battery settings

That’s it, you’ve now either turned on or confirmed that Clean Energy Charging is enabled on your iPhone.

While your iPhone is on a charger and Clean Energy Charging is on, you’ll see a notification on the lock screen with an estimate of when your phone will be fully charged.

You can long-press this notification and press “Charge Now” to override the feature.

What to do if Clean Energy Charging isn’t working

If you notice Clean Energy Charging isn’t working, Apple has a few suggestions for settings that need to be enabled.

From Apple:

– Go to Settings > Battery > Battery Health & Charging and make sure that Clean Energy Charging is on.
– Go to Settings > Privacy & Security > Location Services and make sure that Location Services is on.
– Locate Settings > Privacy & Security > Location Services > System Services and make sure that System Customization is on.
– Go to Settings > Privacy & Security > Location Services > System Services > Significant Locations and make sure that Significant Locations is on.

If you were having issues with the feature, the above tweaks should help. If not, you might need to contact Apple.

A more sustainable charging option

Now your iPhone will tweak when it charges your device, based on the carbon emission forecast from your local grid. It’s only available in the US, with no word from Apple on when it will get a wider rollout.

We like the option to use greener electricity to recharge our devices, and hope Apple is working on adding the feature to all of its devices.
