All may not be lost.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration announced on Tuesday evening it had stayed Juul’s marketing denial. The agency determined that there are “scientific issues unique to the Juul application that warrant additional review.”

In short, the complete Juul ban is under investigation, but only by a technicality. But while this may sound like great news for the e-cigarette brand, it doesn’t change much. The ban is still effectively in place.

Previously, the FDA made the decision to completely ban the brand’s products from the U.S. market. Retailers removed Juul and its pods from sale the same day.

Juul, however, fought back by filing a request for an administrative stay on the decision – which the agency is investigating now. That means many retailers are simply letting the brand’s products remain on shelves, and selling them to interested parties.

“With this administrative stay from the FDA now in place, we continue to offer our products to adult smokers while we pursue the Agency’s internal review process,” Juul Chief Regulatory Officer Joe Murillo told Gizmodo.

The FDA, in a similar statement to the publication, isn’t exactly okay with that. Legally, Juul can’t market, sell, or ship products – as it doesn’t technically have the authorization from the FDA to do any of that.

juul e-cigarettes online sales ban
Image: Juul

For now, Juul is operating as it did before. This likely won’t be a position that lasts indefinitely. The investigation is still pending. It could take quite a while before completion.

So if you’re looking to stock up on Juul pods and products, now might be the time. Or use this development to stop vaping, because you could save money in the long run instead. More cool stuff in your house and fewer e-cigarettes? Sounds like a better deal to me, but you do you.

The Good
Simple to use
Quick heating, clean hits
Easy-to-use LCD screen and controls
The Bad
Battery charge time is a bit slow
Weak magnetic connection that secures the mouth piece

Overall

When it comes to smoking weed, it doesn’t take much to please me. I don’t need anything fancy (like this monstrosity) and I prefer simplicity during my sessions. This is why I’m falling in love with the G Pen Elite II.

This vape from Grenco Science fits easily in the palm of your hands and allows you to simply pack the ceramic heating chamber, get your material to the desired temperature, and puff away. Equipped with an LCD screen and haptic feedback, this vape walks you through the whole process extremely well.

The G Pen Elite II uses a dual-heater system to make the heating process ridiculously quick. While it might not be quite as quick as taking a lighter to a bowl, the clean smoke it produces makes it a winner for those with sensitive lungs.

READ MORE: Review: Zeus Arc GTS Vaporizer (3rd Gen)

From the shape of the device to the full-color LCD screen used, it’s clear that Grenco Science knows what they are doing when it comes to vapes. Every part of this device has been made with intent and it shows from the near-flawless experience I’ve had with it.

Running $249, it’s definitely not going to be your cheapest smoking method, but if you are looking for something easy on the lungs and a little more refined, there’s a lot to love here. Let’s dive in.

Setting up the G Pen Elite II

The silicone sleeve fits well on the vape (Image: Josiah Motley / KnowTechie)

Setting up the G Pen Elite II is a simple process. So simple, in fact, that there’s really no setup required. Simply unpack the unit, read the instruction card, and you’re good to go.

It features a 2100mAh battery, which takes about an hour and a half to charge to full using the included USB-C cable.

While that time seems a bit long for its 60-minute battery life, I never found it to be an issue, as I was always good and toasted well before that 60 minutes was up.

For those of us worried about dropping the unit – or simply prefer a little more protection – Grenco also includes a form-fitting silicone sleeve that slides directly over the vaporizer.

The G Pen Elite II is simplicity at its finest

g-pen ii in-hand
Image: Josiah Motley / KnowTechie

I get confused easily. More so when I’m smoking. I don’t need or want anything fancy. I’m of the firm belief we basically perfected weed-smoking technology™ with the advent of the glass bowl. This vaporizer is making me reconsider that stance.

The G Pen Elite II blends technology perfectly into something that, admittedly, doesn’t really need technology. The unit only features three buttons, but with those buttons and the full-color LCD screen, you have access to plenty of things to improve your experience.

Within the LCD’s menus, you can adjust session times, change convection (heating) settings, update firmware (over WiFi), adjust the haptic feedback, and more.

The LCD screen is bright and clear and after setting your desired temperature, you can watch the temp gauge rise until it reaches the correct level. Then, as an added bonus for times when you don’t feel like staring at the screen, the haptic feedback will buzz letting you know it’s ready.

Finally, the included pick tool for packing and cleaning the bowl is a godsend. It sits flush in the base of the unit and is extremely secure. I’ve never once felt like I would lose it or that it was becoming loose in its holster after multiple removals.

What’s the hit like?

packing a vaporizer
Image: Josiah Motley / KnowTechie

When talking about vaporizers, one of the main factors is the hit users get when using the unit. For its size, the Elite II performs exceptionally well.

While the first hit or two from the unit might be a little weak, it stabilizes once the chamber fully heats up and it provides satisfying amounts of smoke. The dual heating chamber also means you get a clean hit, which can sometimes be hit or miss on vaporizers.

Ultimately, it is one of the things I appreciated most about the unit. For me, taste is a major factor in the enjoyment of my sessions, and while it provides a different taste than more traditional methods, hits are smooth and allow you to really get a good taste of the strain you are smoking.

Is there anything bad about the G Pen Elite II?

g-pen 2 dual chamber
Image: Josiah Motley / KnowTechie

I’ve spent a lot of time talking about all the great parts of the Elite II. But, nothing is ever perfect, and the same goes for the Elite II. Thankfully, the negatives are few and far between.

The biggest issue I found with the unit is the magnetic mouthpiece. While this makes it super convenient to take off and clean/pack your ceramic chamber, I found the magnets to be a bit weak. This led to the top popping off a few times during sessions. Not a dealbreaker, but something to keep in mind.

I also found that the carb holes are in a slightly awkward place. They aren’t necessary when smoking and honestly, the issue rarely came up as I didn’t use them often.

But if you use them for increased control over airflow, you might have to angle your thumb a bit awkwardly. It’s far from a dealbreaker, but when everything else about the Elite II’s ergonomics is perfect, it’s something you might notice.

Finally, when it comes to negatives, I really wish the full charging time was a bit quicker. Again, not a dealbreaker, but 1.5 hours is a tough hit (no pun intended).

Should you buy the G Pen Elite II?

lcd screen on vape
Image: Josiah Motley / KnowTechie

If you are looking for a compact vape that is easy to use and offers extremely clean hits, you can’t go wrong with this offering from Grenco Science.

The form factor is perfect and it doesn’t require a degree in rocket science to use. That form factor does lead the unit to get a bit warm, but it was never unmanageable and the silicone sleeve can help manage that.

At $249, it isn’t the cheapest vaporizer on the market, but the quality makes the price much easier to justify. If you prefer cartridge vapes, something like the PCKT Two might be more your style. You can read our review of an earlier model here.

If you prefer dry herb vapes, however, you also can’t go wrong with the DaVinci IQC or the Zeus Arc GTS. But, personally, I find the form and function of the Elite II better than both of these options.

Finally, if you are looking for a dry herb vape for under $200, the Utillian 722 is a solid option that will set you back $149.99.

You can snag the G Pen Elite II directly from Grenco, and it is also available at Vapor.com and Vape-Smart.

UPDATE 12/26/2022 12:37 PM EST: I just wanted to give you a quick update on this review from back in March. In case you were wondering, this bong is still kicking my ass in the best way possible. I’ll admit I’m sometimes intimidated by it, but when I do finally use it, it’s totally worth it. So don’t worry; this fancy gravity bong is still worth every single one of those $600. I just thought you should know.

In my heyday, all I needed to get stoned was a couple of empty two-litter bottles, a slither of tinfoil, some room-temperature water, and, naturally, some weed.

Do you see where I’m going with this? Essentially, I’m describing all the fixings of a basic gravity bong

Today, I wouldn’t be caught dead smoking out one of these. After all, who wants to dig through the recycling bin to craft something that helps them get high?

Sure, it was fun when I was 17, but at the ripe old age of 38, there must be a better alternative.

Well, meet the Stündenglass Gravity Infuser. This beast of a smoking apparatus is your modern-day take on the classic gravity bong you used to make in your friend’s basement.

Editor’s Pick

Quick Verdict

If you like getting zonked out of your skull, then Studenglass is what you’re looking for. I didn’t think I would like it, but it’s given me a newfound respect for gravity bongs.

Update: This bong? Still wrecking me in the most enjoyable way imaginable. Just wanted to keep you all in the loop on my ongoing struggle against this formidable piece of glassware

Now, imagine what one would look like if a former Apple employee and a team of engineers designed one.

Well, that’s what you get with the Stündenglass. I mean, look at it. Have you ever seen a bong this gorgeous? I didn’t coin this term, but this is some modern-age bongineering, am I right?

Modern-age bongineering

I promised myself a long time ago that I would never smoke out of a gravity bong again, but passing an opportunity to smoke some fire out of something like this was out of the question.

And after a few weeks with the Stündenglass, I can confidently say it works just as advertised. It’s an absolute beast, and it literally put me on my ass, like, in a good way.

Who is this good for?

  • Anyone who wants something a little more sophisticated than traditional gravity bongs or hookahs.
  • People who want a zero-contact smoking option
  • Serious stoners who value a smooth but unforgiving cannabis experience.

If looks could kill

On the outside, the Stündenglass looks incredibly intimidating. You know it’s going to fuck you up just by looking at it.

Sure, the actual product won’t, but the science behind it surely will. Here’s how the company describes it on its product page:

“Stündenglass is honored to introduce the Gravity Infuser, a sophisticated and elegantly designed 360° rotating glass infuser that generates kinetic motion activation via cascading water displacement, opposing airflow technology and the natural force of gravity.”

I don’t know about you guys, but that tells me smoking out of this thing will get you absolutely ripped. I mean, science says so, and I’m certainly not going to argue with science.

But after a few initial test runs, I can confirm this thing is legit and genuinely out of this world.

How it performs

Using the Stündenglass is pretty straightforward. If you have any previous experience with gravity bongs, you’ll feel at home here.

However, if this is your first time, here’s a quick rundown:

Fill the infuser with water, pack the bowl, and light your material. From here, you’ll flip the glass unit over – this is where the magic happens.

After you flip it over, water will drain into the bottom chamber, filling the top chamber with smoke.

Once the lower chamber fills with smoke, flip the unit again, and smoke immediately rushes out of the mouthpiece. So here’s your queue to start inhaling all the smoke that rushes out.

Here’s a helpful video that explains the whole process above

After my first try, I was floored by how well it worked. Sure, gravity bongs achieve the same effect, but it’s not as smooth as Stündenglass.

Also, with gravity bongs, the smoke comes out hot and harsh to the lungs. Not to mention, it doesn’t taste all that great either, but this wasn’t the case with Studenglass.

And with traditional gravity bongs, you only have one chance to suck up all that smoke before it’s gone.

Your lungs are going to need a break, in a good way

With Studenglass, if the smoke becomes a bit much, you can flip the unit over again and send the smoke to the other empty chamber, giving your lungs a break.

If mary jane isn’t your cup of tea, the Stündenglass can be used for things other than cannabis. For example, you can use it for hookah and Shisha tobacco.

And if you really want to get fancy, it can also be used as a beverage infuser, creating smoke-infused drinks.

Final Verdict – Should you buy the Stündenglass?

If you enjoy smoking weed and getting zonked out of your skull, then the Studenglass is what you’re looking for.

I didn’t think I would like it, but it’s given me a newfound respect for gravity bongs after using it several times.

Another silver lining is all the money you’ll eventually save buying cannabis.

What would typically take me one or two grams to reach my desired high, the Studenglass was able to get me there with less than half a gram because I’m essentially smoking it all in about 30 seconds.

So yea, if you enjoy getting stoned and saving money, then the Studenglass infuser is something that you should track on your radar.

Sure, you may not need it, but having it around for you and your partner or the occasional house guest doesn’t hurt either.

Image: Kevin Raposo / KnowTechie

Now, here’s the awkward part. Studenglass isn’t cheap. The unit will set you back $600. Yes, $600 for a gravity bong.

To be fair, once you get your hands on it, buyer’s remorse will immediately fade away.

Sure, $600 is a big ask, especially considering it’s for a souped-up gravity bong. But again, I can’t stress how much money you’ll eventually save on flower down the road.

This puppy will get you stoned to the bone for a lot less flour than you’re generally used to.

So, is the Stündenglass worth the $600 price tag? It might be if you’re a serious stoner who values a smooth, clean hit and a zero-contact smoking experience. Plus, with endorsements from Seth Rogen and Wiz Khalifa, you know it’s gotta be good.

  • Best Runner-up

    Studenglass Kompact

The Stündenglass Kompact is supposedly more compact. But don’t get too excited – it’s just as expensive as the original, so you might as well go big or go home. In the end, it’s all about personal preference

The Studenglass comes in two sizes. First, there’s the original, and then a smaller compact unit called the Studenglass Kompact.

Unfortunately, there’s no difference in price, so it all comes down to personal preference.

If the $600 is a tough pill to swallow, there are other alternatives naturally. Of course, for less than $3, you can always make your own gravity bong, but again, you won’t get the same results.

And if making your own isn’t an option, similar products include the Infinity Waterfall and Freeze Pipe’s gravity bong

If I wasn’t so incredibly high, I’d never forget the day that Kevin asked me to review the Gold Edition Storz and Bickel Volcano. As it stands, I barely remember what happened four seconds ago. I often forget the end of a sentence once I have started it. Ah, the life of a seasoned pot-head, eh? So many th…hang on, what was I saying?

Oh yeah, the Volcano.

Nothing had quite prepared me for the sheer scale of high I can achieve with the Volcano vaporizer. Having tested it for several weeks now, I think I’ve finally come back down to earth close enough to reach my keyboard and write a review. Here’s what I think of this brilliant vape.

Note: The wonderful folk at vapor.com provided the Volcano device I tested, and you can grab your own Gold Storz and Bickel Volcano there, too.

A stunning sight to behold

controls of the volcano

Image: KnowTechie

The Storz and Bickel Volcano is really quite a beautiful device. The test device is the Gold Edition, which marks 25 years for the S&B brand. As it is a limited edition, it comes with a limited edition price tag. However, this vape will repay the $599 investment in the amount of product you consume; significantly less than if you are smoking blunts or ripping bongs all the time.

It is (obviously) volcano-shaped, with this version boasting a high-luster gold fascia that gives the vape an almost ornamental quality. It is certainly a talking point for friends when you get it out after dinner and whatnot for a herbal dessert.

The front of the device bears the Storz and Bickel Volcano branding, below which are the controls; a Heat switch which lights up red when turned on, a Control indicator so you know when the volcano is hot enough, and the air button which operates the pump that blows hot air out.

The front also has an analog dial to set the temperature, with numbers that correspond with the temperature range that the vape covers.

Volcano top grille

Image: KnowTechie

The top of the vape has a grille that protects the heating element inside, and the magnetized locator for the bud chamber to sit on during vaping.

The bottom has the generously long wire and plug for connecting the Volcano to a power source.

How do you vape with the Volcano?

So, how does a vape actually work? Well, if you have never used one before, allow me to explain specifically how the Volcano works. First, you need to find out the correct temperature for vaping bud, assuming that is what you are using the Volcano for, and not huffing bags of sage or pine as the instruction manual suggests.

THC, which is the active ingredient in cannabis, will vaporize at temperatures between 338 F and 372 F degrees. As this is not the digital version of the Volcano, the instruction manual features a table so you can gauge what temperature matches the corresponding number on the dial at the front of the device.

So, now you have the right temp, you’re ready for step two. Grab your bud and measure out the desired quantity (I found 0.028 oz, or 0.8 g to be the perfect amount for me, but how much you put in is up to you and depends on how much you want to fill the chamber; it has limited space to fill).

volcano chamber filled with weed

Image: KnowTechie

Now you can plug the vape in and switch it on. The Heat button will illuminate to show it is operational. Next, select your desired temperature on the dial. As said, there are optimum temperatures for THC to vaporize, so start off on the lower end of the scale or you’ll just torch the flower and end up with something that tastes a bit like burned shit.

The control light will illuminate while the heating element inside reaches the correct temperature. Once this happens, the control light will switch off, and it is time to vape. While you wait for the element to heat, you can grind your bud with the included Storz and Bickel shark-tooth grinder.

Make sure it is finely ground in order to get the most surface area out of your bud and therefore the most vapor. Then you can load it into the chamber and twist it closed. The chamber then sits neatly on top of the magnetized locator up top.

Now it is simply a case of placing one balloon on top of the chamber, hitting the air button, and watching as your vapor fills the balloon! Once it is full, remove the bag, add the mouthpiece to the valve, and you can, at last, vape some bud. You get around ten minutes to inhale what is in the chamber before you’ve wasted it. Prepare to waste yourself in the process.

What is the Volcano like to use?

I’m going to set the record straight here. I smoke a lot of weed. As a result, it costs me a lot of money. However, I didn’t realize how much cash I could save by ditching the spliffs and going 100%-vape only, especially as I often mix with tobacco as well. Seriously, you need little weed in one chamber to do some serious damage for an entire evening.

weight of weed with the volcano

Image: KnowTechie

As mentioned, I use 0.028 oz per chamber. This will completely fill one balloon around 4-6 times. The effects of one balloon will last for a couple of hours, so you can see how much this is going to save you. One person doesn’t really need a full balloon.

The high from the Volcano is unlike anything I have ever experienced. Your high will be different depending on the strain and strength of the flower you vape. However, you will be well and truly bombed once you’ve huffed your first balloon.

The reason it is unlike any other method of experiencing cannabis is down to the high itself. Unlike smoking herb, vaping it produces a very clean high indeed. You can tell you are absolutely fucked, but at the same time you can think, speak, and generally operate coherently.

volcano balloon with vapor

Please don’t think you’ll be able to power through a lung and then go driving to work or something. You categorically should never DUI and your employer will know if you’re smashed on the old devil’s lettuce. This is for home use only, right?

Flavor-wise, it produces some incredible tastes. I checked the taste profile of the strain I was vaping (Trainwreck) and it listed citrus and pine. Lo-and-behold, one blast of the vapor and I was in the Norwegian forests carrying a bowl of freshly cut lemons (I wasn’t tripping, idiot, I’m talking about the taste but using a metaphor).

Honestly, I absolutely love the Volcano and I would highly recommend investing in one if you like to enjoy The Good Good.

Should I buy a Volcano?

volcano with grinder and weed

Image: KnowTechie

Erm…yes! Well, only if it is legal to do so in your particular location and you like to get stoned. And you have $599. It is a brilliant vape that produces a lovely clear high that allows you to keep lucidity instead of being that pothead.

If you are interested in getting into vaping, then you could also check out the digital version of the Volcano, the Storz and Bickel Mighty, or the Plenty vape and see if those are more suited to your needs.

The Good
Solid quality
Easy to use
The Air Dial is great
Clean hits without overheating
The Bad
In a perfect world, it would have a longer battery life
9.5
Overall

Vaporizers can be pretty hit or miss. Some nail it on form and functionality, while others can feel like a waste of time. The DaVinci IQ2 is definitely the former.

Quite possibly the most recognized brand in the vape sphere, DaVinci had a lot to live up to with the new IQ2, as the original was absolutely fantastic.

The new version looks a lot like the original, but if you are a fan of vaping flower (or even concentrates), it is definitely worth checking out.

DaVinci IQ2 builds on the success of the original

davinci iq2 buttons on side
Image: Josiah Motley / KnowTechie

The original IQ did a lot right and this one follows right in its footsteps while improving on some of the biggest shortcomings with the original.

For one, cleaning is much simpler on the new version and as someone who hates vape or pipe maintenance, this was very welcome. Also, the brushed aluminum looks great.

READ MORE: Review: DaVinci IQ2 Carbon Fiber

Battery life for me lasted around 45 minutes of near-continuous use and my charge times to full was right around 5 hours. One thing DaVinci gets right with the IQ2 is the use of the rechargeable 3500 (Type 18650) mAh battery.

You can charge it directly from the microUSB port on the vaporizer or you can remove it easily and charge it on your own charger while you swap a new battery in.

The new Air Dial valve is a godsend for my lungs

davinci iq2 air dial
Image: Josiah Motley / KnowTechie

I’ve got baby lungs. I cough when I hit basically anything, vapes not excluded. It is what it is. With the IQ2, DaVinci has added an Air Dial valve right on the bottom and it is a much welcome addition. This allows whoever is smoking at the time to adjust the airflow to get the perfect hit of bud. I’m easy to please, and this was probably my favorite part of the IQ2.

In addition to a well-adjusted hit from the Air Dial, the IQ2 features an “all-ceramic air path [and] is engineered with zirconia and a glass-lined oven” according to the company’s website. These components help ensure a smooth hit and keep the temperatures down as well. While on the subject of temperatures, the vaporizer also manages to keep its cool during sessions, never feeling overly hot to the touch.

Something worth mentioning and not something I spent much time with is the new on-device dosage system. Something usually handled by an app can now be done on-device. This was due, in part, to Apple removing all vape related apps from the App Store.

Overall, I was extremely impressed with the DaVinci IQ2. It isn’t cheap at $295, but if you are serious about smoking and looking for a vaporizer to add to your assortment of smoking devices, you can’t go wrong with the IQ2. After using various vapes and ultimately going back to tried-and-true methods of consuming bud, the IQ2 is the first vape I’ve preferred to use other more traditional methods.

In response to the 42 vape-related deaths across the country and reports from the CDC, Apple is taking down vape-related apps from the App Store.

Axios reports that this morning 181 apps are now eliminated. If someone searched terms like “e-cig” they were greeted with no results.

Apple released its statement on the issue, reflecting on the ongoing crisis and its decision with the App Store.

Recently, experts ranging from the CDC to the American Heart Association have attributed a variety of lung injuries and fatalities to e-cigarette and vaping products, going so far as to call the spread of these devices a public health crisis and a youth epidemic. We agree, and we’ve updated our App Store Review Guidelines to reflect that apps encouraging or facilitating the use of these products are not permitted.

However, the term “vape” can still show results, but it shows apps that help users quit vaping or e-cigarettes.

In response to the vape-related deaths, Apple removes 181 vape apps from the App Store

Apple stopped accepting new vape apps in the store back in June and this is just the next logical step. The company reassures customers that the apps were not marketplaces to buy off-the-street vapes. Instead, the store sold ones can control the temperature of smart vapes and ones that acted as news sources.

Apple has been given encouragement from the American Heart Association and Campaign for Tobacco-Free Kids. Nancy Brown, the CEO of the Association, has said that they are “grateful” for the company’s decision.

The CDC might have just figured out the cause of all these vaping deaths https://knowtechie.com/the-cdc-might-have-just-figured-out-the-cause-of-all-these-vaping-deaths/ Fri, 08 Nov 2019 21:31:36 +0000 https://knowtechie.com/?p=106589 It seems Vitamin E acetate may be the culprit.

The post The CDC might have just figured out the cause of all these vaping deaths appeared first on KnowTechie.

The Center for Disease Control studied 29 lung tissue samples in order to find a cause behind the epidemic of vaping-induced deaths and sickness. In all 29 lung samples, Vitamin E acetate was found in all of them.

Dr. Anne Schuchat, the CDC’s principal deputy director, said that while Vitamin E acetate is common in many products, there is no need to panic when coming in contact with it.

There is a big difference between putting vitamin E acetate on one’s skin or swallowing a vitamin E pill and inhaling vitamin E acetate in an e-liquid.

The vaping-induced lung disease is called EVALI, which stands for e-cigarettes, vaping, associated products lung illness. Not to make lite of a bad situation, but side note, anyone notices there is a missing P in that acronym? Just me?

The CDC found a culprit, but what could this mean for those who still vape?

Earlier this year, nearly 40 people died and 2,000 were found sick due to inhaling vape smoke. There have been calls to action to try and ban the sale of vaping products across the country. One of the more publicized cases was in Massachusetts.

READ MORE: CDC secretly tracked our phones to monitor COVID-19 lockdowns

Along with finding Vitamin E acetate, the CDC has found traces of THC in 23 of the samples as well. However, the organization has found that the traces of THC are found in vaping products purchased on the street and not in a store.

The CDC still urges those who have not bought them in a store to stop immediately. They also want to let those who still want to vape, to find alternatives without the ingredients Vitamin E acetate and/or THC. Dr. Schuchat and her team are still researching other possible compounds and ingredients that could be the cause.

What do you think? Surprised by the results of the study from the CDC? Let us know down below in the comments or carry the discussion over to our Twitter or Facebook.

A former Juul executive filed a lawsuit against the e-cigarette company because, allegedly, one million tainted nicotine pods were shipped to retailers, as reported by Business Insider. The company has also attempted to resell products that were expired with a brand new “best by” title slapped on them.

And to add to this, higher-ups at Juul had reportedly known the products were bad but shipped them anyway.

A former Juul VP brought to light issues with products and poor working conditions

Siddarth Breja, Senior Vice President of Global Finance, is the executive named in the suit. He stated he had brought these practices to light last March. However, Breja was released from his role not long afterward. Juul claims Breja has embellished his role at Uber, his previous company.

READ MORE: The FDA put a ban on Juul e-cigarettes

Breja’s suit details the other poor business practices within the company, among some of them being a ‘culture of silence’ and former CEO Kevin Burns, who stepped down in September, behaving ‘in a dictatorial manner.’ For example, long before Breja’s dismissal from Juul, Burns and the other higher-ups repeatedly ignored his concerns to them.

Breja says he tried multiple times to speak out against the company’s below-par ethics. However, he was threatened into silence. Not long after his termination, Juul filed a case against Breja in July alleging ‘serious deficiencies in his management style’ and ‘inability to collaborate with peers and consistently treat others with respect.’

The ‘treating others with respect’ line is interesting. Because the most egregious part of this lawsuit is the quote from Burns. It is in regard to how he feels about his loyal clientele.

Half our customers are drunk and vaping like mo-fos, who the f–k is going to notice?

Jeez, Kev, tell us how you really feel?

Before we get too far into this, there is no vaping crisis. Not statistically at least. There are bad THC carts out there causing inevitable problems, including a few deaths and a few hundred sicknesses. This is going to happen when people are forced to a secondary market. The other inevitable thing that has happened because of this is that Juul and vaping has been publicly painted as the villain, while cigarettes and alcohol laugh heartily in the corner.

Today, Altria Group, the American tobacco company formerly called Philip Morris USA that produces such popular cigarette brands as Marlboro, Virginia Slims (Kevin’s brand of choice), Benson & Hedges, Merit, and Parliament is involved in two moves to ensure that smoking is the death luxury of choice for Americans and not vaping. First, it will place one of its own people in the place of Juul CEO Kevin Burns, who is exiting the company amid all this faux controversy.

READ MORE: The FDA put a ban on Juul e-cigarettes

Second, PMI (Philip Morris International) and Altria have ceased merger conversations that would reunite the company. Instead, PMI is going to focus on its IQOS smoking cessation device, recently approved by the FDA for public consumption in America. IQOS, thankfully for PMI, is not appealing to youth vapers (or smokers) and has never run any kind of advertising that would be mistaken as catering to the youth market. Meanwhile, Juul has suspended all advertising as well as lobbying.

So that’s the news, but what’s the truth?

As of right now, we only know what we’re seeing in sensationalist headlines. According to the CDC, there have been seven confirmed deaths in six states. According to the news headlines, it’s nine. It’s likely due to knock-off THC carts rather than nicotine vapes, but there is no definitive proof either way. States are banning vaping in an effort to assuage a panicked and ill-informed public who don’t understand statistics.

Here are some statistics as we’re rushing to ban vaping. Again, according to the CDC, 16 million Americans have some sort of smoking-related disease. But we already know that. We know smoking kills. Walmart sure does, as it has banned the sale of cigarettes. Just kidding. It banned the sale of vapes, which makes no fucking sense at all. And I’m not even going to get into gun violence at a social or statistical level. This whole thing is ridiculous.

The fear surrounds the classic “but what about our children” argument. Listen, kids are always going to do dumb shit. That’s part of being a kid. Is it ok that they die sometimes from it? Hell no. However, you have to find out the reason why. Marijuana remains illegal in most states. Getting knock-off THC carts through some Chinese Instagram account is a great way to put poison into your body. There are so many variables here, but vaping is becoming something worse in the public eye than what it is because we don’t have free access to regulated and tested THC carts (as consumers do in states like California and Colorado).

Take binge drinking, something kids certainly do because they haven’t learned how to moderate yet. Binge drinking, generally affecting the population under the age of 21, results in roughly 88,000 deaths a year and countless more incidents and accidents. Where is the outrage? Where are the parents demanding alcohol be banned? There is none. We’re used to that statistic. We’re used to kids dying from binge drinking and the alcohol and tobacco lobby is so ingrained in American politics that these statistics will never be brought into the vaping conversation.

22 people die from cow-tipping every year. That’s more than double the recorded deaths from vaping. Let’s ban the cows!

K.C. Crosthwaite, the former Chief Growth Officer at Altria who is taking control of Juul nails it in today’s press release. “I have long believed in a future where adult smokers overwhelmingly choose alternative products like Juul,” said Crosthwaite. “Unfortunately, today that future is at risk due to unacceptable levels of youth usage and eroding public confidence in our industry. Against that backdrop, we must strive to work with regulators, policymakers and other stakeholders, and earn the trust of the societies in which we operate.”

Basically, Juul has to lobby harder (after these vaping death stories blow over) to become to America what smoking is, something we just accept regardless of the kill count. Do I think kids should vape? No, they shouldn’t do anything that puts their still-developing bodies in harm’s way. Are they going to vape, smoke, drink, and fuck regardless? Yes. So as parents, besides sharing and freaking out after a few news stories about vaping deaths, what can we do? We can teach moderation.

This is really a cautionary tale about moderation

teen filling up vape mod

Image: Unsplash

I have an 18-year-old vape user in my family. He has that thing in his mouth more than a call center employee chews pens. More than a lot lizard at a truck stop at the intersection of I-95 and I-10. More than a French Canadian laborer who smokes four packs of Marlboro Reds a day. The point is, most young adults haven’t learned to moderate. So when something is above the normal level of dangerous or harmful and they are ignorant about those dangers, there is a greater chance they are going to get fucked by it.

I’m not excusing those that are counterfeiting these things and filling them with chemicals and other harmful ingredients. Vapes are already harmful in their own way, certainly over the long-term (even though they haven’t been around long enough to definitively say that, but anything you consume in excess will eventually harm you), and while nicotine vapes are still a healthier alternative to smoking, THC vapes appear to not be a consistent alternative to smoking naturally grown cannabis.

It also raises concerns about buying homemade THC vape carts. Why would you do that? It’s like buying crack-cocaine. Sure, it’s cheaper, but you don’t know what is in there.

So it really comes back to monitoring what you are putting into your body. These cases of vaping illness and death appear to not only have THC vaping in common, but appear to be affecting the young and addicted. That’s a dangerous combination.

While THC vaping offers the benefit of being able to vape anywhere, anytime – it also offers the opportunity to completely abandon moderation. Yes, even THC input needs to be moderated. You can’t even expect to smoke cannabis in the traditional sense all day every day without some adverse side effects. It’s not smoking, but it’s something and too much of anything something can be dangerous.

If you are a parent, be aware of what your child is putting into their body or at least teach them moderation. I can’t stop my kid from vaping, he’s a goddamn adult. I can only hope that the lessons on moderation that I’ve passed down can help him avoid ending up hooked to tubes in the hospital. I’d prefer he quit, but that’s hard for me to take the high ground on that since I’m a tobacco user. But also being sober for nearly nine years (and him seeing the effects alcohol had on me) might add to the moderation lesson.

If you are a young person getting into THC vaping, don’t fucking suck on that thing all goddamn day long. Also, make sure you are buying legit products and not something your sketchy friend of a friend made in their basement. There is always going to be someone out there mixing chemicals for a counterfeit product in order to save a buck. While you can’t test everything you buy, maybe switch back to cannabis flower for a bit. Learn how to make a bong out of a Mountain Dew bottle. That’s a life skill that will do you well.

I’m not advocating quitting THC vape carts completely, there are still plenty of regulated and legitimate businesses that sell them in the states where it’s allowed. I’m saying be cautious about what you put in your body. If it seems shady, skip it. Better safe than having your lungs fall apart because of fungicide in your THC cart.

Bottom line: If you don’t smoke, don’t start vaping

If you are trying to quit smoking, vaping is still less harmful than smoking, just moderate. If you are using THC carts, make sure they are legit. If you react to sensationalist headlines with shock and awe, take a look around your world, learn statistics and figure out what these stories are really about. Altria, a tobacco company that is nationally accepted with its annual kill count, owns the most popular vape brand that is under fire for a number of deaths that are surprising and suddenly making it public enemy number one.

Vapes are being banned before cigarettes after single-digit deaths. Think about that and what that means if vaping is no longer a viable alternative to smoking and all the kids and adults that are used to nonstop vaping. Imagine cigarettes being used like vapes. Imagine vaping addicts now being forced onto the secondary market. This is not a sustainable solution.

We should care about these deaths, we should be concerned because they are affecting the youth, but we should also be skeptical of where this is leading and how much control big tobacco has over the narrative (remember, Altria basically owns nicotine vaping in America). We should think about how the legalization of marijuana across the country affects the quality of THC carts and the secondary market. We should also consider moderation and how we should have ultimate control over what we put in our bodies, even if it kills a few of us. Or in the case of smoking, a few million of us.

What do you think? Agree with what I’m saying or am I just blowing smoke? Let us know down below in the comments or carry the discussion over to our Twitter or Facebook.

The Good

Pod storage is a nice little touch

The Bad
One of my devices just stopped charging on me
The anodized aluminum casing is susceptible to scrapes and scratches

Overall

If you’re a habitual Juul fiend user like I am, one thing that’s for certain is that you have to charge these little suckers any chance you can. Seriously, I vape about two pods a day, which means I have to have keep this thing charging as much as possible throughout the day. And man, if it isn’t, stay away from me. I’m a cranky bitch if I can’t get to my nicotine stick.

Anyways, if this sounds like you (and it’s totally OK if it doesn’t – I have an issue, I know), then you absolutely need to drop what you’re doing and check out this portable Juul charger called the Brik.

So what exactly is the Brik?

brik juul portable charger knowtechie review

Image: Kevin Raposo / KnowTechie

It’s a portable charger for your Juul. You charge your Juul with it. That’s it. Seriously, that’s its one job and honestly, I’m not mad about it. I appreciate a device that has one job, and a job it can get done right. And for the most part, the Brik charger did exactly that.

The Brik isn’t your normal battery pack. I mean, obviously. But it’s slim. Like, really slim – slim enough that it fits right into my pocket without taking valuable real estate. The company’s website says that it measures less than half an inch in width. The anodized metal case is equipped with a 1000 mAh battery, which gives users about three complete charges to their Juul devices. There’s even storage space to store an extra pod in the case, you know, just in case you need one later down the road.

I was recently on vacation in the Azores, Portugal and figured this would the perfect opportunity to put this charger through the wringer. The Azores are a group of small islands smack down in the middle of the Atlantic ocean and for the better part of the days, I would be away from a traditional wall outlet, so a portable charging option was necessary. This is where the Brik charger came into play.

Right from the rip, the Brik worked just as advertised

brik juul portable charger knowtechie review

Image: Kevin Raposo / KnowTechie

I was instantly sold on it. Anytime my Juul needed a charge, I placed it in the case’s magnetic charger and away it went. Every time I would take it back out, the device was fully charged. The case even tells you how much battery power is left just in case you need to charge the charger. If this thing pumped out free pods, this device would be a Juul user’s wet dream.

However, all good things must come to an end. Towards the end of the trip, the device simply stopped working. Not entirely, but in the sense that if I put the Juul in the charger, the device would show it as charging, but in reality, it wasn’t. I confirmed this with a dead Juul. When a Juul device has a low battery, a red light will glow when you tap on the Juul. After leaving the dead Juul in the Brik charger for about an hour and trying again, it was still dead.

Thankfully, Brik sent me a variety pack that included 3 additional Brik chargers so I was able to keep my Juul juiced up for the remainder of my trip. The company sells the Brik charger at $30 a pop. The variety pack will run you $84. In my case, the obvious choice is the variety pack just in case one of the chargers shits the bed on you.

Sure, Juul makes a portable charger of its own, but there are a few things that set the Brik charger apart from Juul’s. For starters, with Brik, you have color options, where Juul only gives you one choice – black.

Brik’s device is slimmer and is made of anodized aluminum, where’s Juul’s offering is made mostly of plastic. Not to mention, Brik offers a lifetime warranty on its devices, where Juul only gives you two years. So there’s that. Obviously, Brik’s offering is the way to go here.

As someone who lives and dies by the Juul, Brik’s portable Juul charger is truly a godsend. If you’re a Juul user, there’s no doubt about it, you need this. If not now, at some point you will.

Either way, Brik chargers are up for grabs on the company’s website. Brik has them cheaper on their website, however, it’s about a buck or two more on Amazon. The latter option gives you free shipping if you’re an Amazon Prime subscriber. Brik offers free shipping on orders over $10. So you have options.

Are you a JUUL user? Obviously, you can see the value here with this, right? Have any thoughts on this? Let us know down below in the comments or carry the discussion over to our Twitter or Facebook.

San Francisco’s ban on e-cigarettes sends the mixed message that smoking is still totally cool https://knowtechie.com/san-francisco-e-cig-ban-juul/ Wed, 26 Jun 2019 13:28:57 +0000 https://knowtechie.com/?p=96527 Joe Camel is laughing in his grave.

The post San Francisco’s ban on e-cigarettes sends the mixed message that smoking is still totally cool appeared first on KnowTechie.

]]>
You can shit on the streets of San Francisco, but you can no longer purchase e-cigarettes within the city limits. In a move that makes total sense, the city has decided to ban the sale of e-cigarettes, including the popular Juul.

Over the past few decades, there has been a decline in youth smoking, which apparently has been undone by the existence of vaping. This is because government agencies still don’t know what to do with vaping, as far as regulation and classification. Nicotine consumption is the same to them, whether it be through cigarettes or vapes.

The decision in San Francisco is under the guise of playing parent and protecting children from the harms of ingesting nicotine. Of course, vaping is much less harmful than cigarettes. The science proves it. Of course, the FDA has chosen to mostly ignore that science, even though it recently approved the IQOS from PMI, a smoking cessation device.

Smoking is bad. We know that. Vaping is apparently a complex and nuanced subsection of nicotine delivery. At least to the point that legislators still don’t understand what difference there is between vaping and cigarettes. Kids are still going to do something and if you take away their vapes, well, Altria still profits.

That’s because Altria owns both the Marlboro brand of cigarettes – which are still quite legal to sell and consume in San Francisco – and Juul. Juul is the clear target of this legislation, as many believe that Juul targets kids. You know what? In the beginning of Juul’s existence, I wouldn’t argue that point.

Now though, Juul is strictly marketing itself as a smoking cessation tool for adults

But who the fuck gives a shit? Kids are going to vape. They are going to smoke if they can’t vape. They are going to drink, they are going to fuck and smoke weed. It should be noted that cigarettes and all other tobacco products will remain legal in San Francisco, as well as recreational marijuana. So banning e-cigarettes makes a whole ton of nonsense.

Juul is attempting to get a measure on the November ballot to restrict sales of e-cigarettes to those over the age of 21, which makes more sense than a flat out ban. A straight up ban on e-cigarettes is beyond hypocritical when cigarettes are still being sold in the city. It should be noted that Juul is based in San Francisco and holds a 50% market share of vape sales.

Let’s say that kids are totally dumb and can’t just drive to Oakland or San Jose to get vapes, they are addicted to something. Cutting them off a much less harmful nicotine product will simply drive them to cigarettes. Perhaps not en masse, but certainly a good percentage.

Look, I get what San Francisco is getting at here. The city wants kids to stop vaping because, reasons. I’d rather my own 18-year-old not vape. But I dip, since I was 15. I could quit. I don’t want to. The last 10 years of my life are gonna be shit anyway. Addicts are gonna addict.

Put the blame on the parents, city governments shouldn’t be regulating what kids do with a product that is intended for adults

Put age restrictions on the sale of e-cigarettes similar to alcohol, because kids never consume alcohol right? The point is, a ban like this is only sold as a guise to pRotEK teH kIds but it’s really about control. Controlling something they don’t understand.

I believe when put to a vote, the people will overwhelmingly decide to lift the ban and agree to age restrictive sales instead. A city government stepping in and banning an entire thing never goes over well with the people. Even though kids shouldn’t be vaping or smoking until the age they are entitled to die for our country, there isn’t much a city legislative body can do to stop them.

The only clear message that the city of San Francisco is sending here is that they don’t want retailers selling vape products to anyone that isn’t ready to take up smoking as a vape alternative until the ban is lifted. Vaping made smoking uncool, as far as the youth. Well, with the inability to easily buy vapes in the city, perhaps smoking will be cool again.

What do you think? Do you agree with San Francisco’s decision on banning products like Juul? Let us know down below in the comments or carry the discussion over to our Twitter or Facebook.

CamSoda, the website you visit when you want to play Rear Window without leaving your desk, is today launching its Vapegasm initiative. Vapegasm is a new discipline of teledildonics in which vape pens and connected sex toys play nice together. It’s the ultimate flex for a generation that is sucking on vape pens more than each other.

Using a CamSoda branded vape pen (or any Bluetooth enabled vape pen, it’s not very clear on this), the Vapegasm app and any connected Lovense device, the vaper controls the intensity of the vibrator by how strong they pull on the vape. The longer the draw, the longer the device vibrates. The inverse is true for shorter draws. Right now it only works with female-oriented sex toys, which I’m sure is fine for all the vape bros.

“Vaping has exploded in popularity in recent years and quickly become part of today’s culture. Anywhere you go, you see people juuling or pulling on a vape pen,” said Daryn Parker, VP, CamSoda in a press release. “Considering how much euphoria it provides people with, it only makes sense that we couple it with sexual stimulation to deliver an experience unlike anything before. Now, with Vapegasm, people can get off while getting high.”

That’s right kids. Now your fat rips are literally as orgasmic as you claim they are. That’s pretty much the gist of it. While the connected sex toy market continues to grow, this is a small but entertaining bookmark in that journey.

We live in a connected world that doesn’t require us to leave the house much, so connecting sex to vaping seems like a natural progression in keeping us addicted to our devices.

Vapegasm is available for Apple iOS and Google Android, but not your rotting Windows Phone. The vape pens that CamSoda are offering are available for pre-order and pretty damn cheap at $19.99. There isn’t much more to say. This is a thing that exists now. Enjoy the 21st century while it lasts.

What do you think? Does this need to exist? Should it exist? Let us know down below in the comments or carry the discussion over to our Twitter or Facebook.

Shopping for Mother’s Day is easy. Get her some flowers, or a gift basket with a candle, or if you’re too lazy/cheap to do that, have one of your kid brothers make her a heart-shaped pancake (that always ends up looking more like a scrotum than a heart) and call it breakfast in bed.

But dads? Dads are impossible to shop for. You can’t afford that new grill he’s been eyeing (and even if you could, it would make your Mom’s nutsack pancake look all the worse), and he’s been promising to “literally hang himself” with the next tie you buy him for years now, so what do you turn to?

The answer – as is the answer to most things – is “weed.” With marijuana legalization becoming a bigger part of public discourse by the day, dads across the country have been dusting off their old pipes and ELP records in order to “reconnect with their youth,” so to speak.

But just because your dad hasn’t blazed since the ’70s doesn’t mean he still needs to be using his old smoking gear from the ’70s. So with that in mind, here are a few gift ideas for you to puff, puff, pass to your dad this Father’s Day.

LucidMood Pens

lucidmood vape pens for dad

The laws aren’t the only thing that’s changed regarding marijuana since your dad last lit one up. The THC potency of the average strain has more than tripled in the past few years alone, which can be a lot to handle if you’re just getting back in the swing of smoking.

Luckily for your old man’s weak-ass baby lungs, LucidMood has created a line of vape pens that are perfect for the newly-converted (or re-converted) stoner.

With the goal of “elevating your mood without altering your mind,” LucidMood offers a pen for every temperament, from “Relax” and “Calm” to “Energy” and “Party”, tailor-made for whatever experience you’re after without all the negative effects.

Price: $25+ | LucidMood

CCELL DART

No matter what level of smoker your Dad is, chances are he’s after a more discreet experience than the joints and bowls of old. If there’s one thing any JUUL user knows is that keeping these puppies charged throughout the day feels like a job in and of itself. Seriously, look what happened to Trevor. It’s one of the reasons why many users own two or more JUUL devices. This way, they have one always charging while they vape from the other.

For those of you always on the hunt for a charge, JUUL has heard your cries for help and is now introducing a $49.99 JUUL portable charging case.

Here’s a quick rundown of what we know about the JUUL portable charging case

  • It’s a portable charger. You take it with you. You charge your JUUL device while you’re out and about.
  • It costs $49.99.
  • Rocks 1270 mAH worth of battery capacity.
  • The case is capable of charing a JUUL device up to three times on a single charge.
  • The charger can easily fit in a pocket, bag, or purse.
  • Keeps your JUUL device enclosed and protected
  • Backed by a one-year warranty

READ MORE: Juul continues to sell its products despite the FDA’s investigation

Sure, there are alternatives to this. You could always carry around a portable battery pack, but I have to admit, that doesn’t sound as convenient as this. And yea, $50 might be a little steep for a portable charger, but again, it’s all about peace of mind. Spending that kind of money as opposed to always having to worry about charging a JUUL device is enough for me.

JUUL’s portable charging case can be purchased directly from JUUL’s website. For more information, head on over to the product page here.

FDA finally approves PMI’s IQOS device for U.S. consumption https://knowtechie.com/fda-approves-pmi-iqos-us/ Wed, 01 May 2019 15:06:10 +0000 https://knowtechie.com/?p=91521 Smoking isn't cool.

The post FDA finally approves PMI’s IQOS device for U.S. consumption appeared first on KnowTechie.

]]>
When I reviewed the IQOS, it was not yet approved for sale or marketing in the United States. Thanks to some dogged lobbying by PMI, backed by a constant stream of science coming out of its Cube facility in Neuchâtel, Switzerland, the FDA has finally permitted the sale of the IQOS in the United States.

This doesn’t mean that the approval doesn’t come with a hefty load of caveats. The FDA in no way has approved the device as anything other than what it is — an alternative to cigarettes that still carries a health risk.

The IQOS and authorized products (Marlboro Heatsticks, Marlboro Smooth Menthol Heatsticks, and Marlboro Fresh Menthol Heatsticks) will not be marked as “FDA Approved” and likely will come with large warning stickers similar to those found on traditional packs of cigarettes.

While the IQOS device delivers significantly less harmful toxins than cigarettes because the tobacco is heated and not burned, the FDA has promised that it will be keeping a close eye on the marketing development of the IQOS in the United States, once again leaning on the kids might smoke it angle to justify more stringent oversight. Said Mitch Zeller, J.D., director of the FDA’s Center for Tobacco Products in a press release:

Ensuring new tobacco products undergo a robust premarket evaluation by the FDA is a critical part of our mission to protect the public, particularly youth, and to reduce tobacco-related disease and death. While the authorization of new tobacco products doesn’t mean they are safe, the review process makes certain that the marketing of the products is appropriate for the protection of the public health, taking into account the risks and benefits to the population as a whole. This includes how the products may impact youth use of nicotine and tobacco, and the potential for the products to completely move adult smokers away from use of combustible cigarettes.

Through the science, however, even the FDA has conceded that the IQOS (and by proxy, vaping in general) is a lower-risk alternative to cigarettes

In its own release, after reviewing peer-reviewed published papers and the research from PMI, it concluded that toxins appear at much lower levels than cigarettes. Something the anti-vaping crowd would prefer to be buried.

Not only is the carbon monoxide exposure from IQOS aerosol comparable to regular day-to-day environmental exposure, but levels of acrolein (an acrid chemical produced upon combustion) are 89% to 95% lower and formaldehyde 66% to 91% lower than combustible cigarettes.

Popular in Europe as a tool to quit traditional cigarettes (and marketed as such), the FDA did also concede that the IQOS could very well serve that purpose in the States as well. Though even though the IQOS heats and not burns its tobacco product, the FDA will still be listing it as a cigarette-type product, which restricts marketing efforts. That’s all well and good, because like cigarettes and vape products, it’ll find its way to 7-11 shelves before we know it.

This is a huge step forward for moving society past cigarettes and into the future of vaping. If you don’t smoke, don’t buy an IQOS. If you do smoke and want to quit but find it nearly impossible to do so, then the IQOS is for you. You still get the nicotine delivery, the mouthfeel, and the habit, but without nearly all the harmful chemical side effects. It’s not a perfect world, we all need our something. It’s just better if that something won’t kill us as quickly as the other something.

What do you think? Is the IQOS something you’d consider? Let us know down below in the comments or carry the discussion over to our Twitter or Facebook.

Overall

Jared, our resident dude who vapes plants, is getting buried alive with review units from a surplus of vape companies (there’s a lot of them). Seriously, he said so himself. So, I spared him the privilege of reviewing this vape. And with good reason. I mean, look at this thing. Look at it.

The PCKT (truthfully, I don’t know how to pronounce that) One Plus is one of those vapes you screw a weed cartridge onto. If you’re reading this, I’m going to assume you know the ones I’m talking about here.

The product’s website describes the PCKT One Plus as “artfully crafted to not only be resilient but visually appealing for your active lifestyle.” Sure, that sells, but my biggest takeaway here is that it’s a vape. It gets you high. That’s it.

Image: Kevin Raposo / KnowTechie

The PCKT One Plus vaporizer is your run of the mill cartridge vape. With so many of these available on the market, it’s really hard to set your product apart from the rest. So essentially, if you’ve tried one vape, you’ve tried them all. However, the one thing I particularly liked with this vape is that utilizes an auto-inhale function. A lot of these types of vapes require you to press a button to get a hit. You still get that option with the PCKT One Plus, but if you prefer a hassle-free experience, well, there you go.

Like any other cartridge vape, there’s a bunch of other functions like switching throughout various power modes. So like, if you prefer a soft or a really strong hit, this is how you change it. Essentially you double tap through all the cycles to select your desired battery output. Again, you’re just pressing a bunch of buttons like any other vape.

I should probably talk about some of the technical details, right? Well, for starters, the device features a 660mah battery. It features two unique magnetic adapters. One allows you to hit the vape by simply inhaling the cartridge. The other lets you manually power up the vape to hit it. As for its design, the website states it’s designed from a solid block of aluminum – the final result is a smooth matte finish.

Final Verdict

Image: Kevin Raposo / KnowTechie

It’s fine. It does its job. It’s literally the same experience I’ve had with countless other vapes like this. The one thing I have to say that sets it apart from the rest is its design. It’s a pretty looking thing and I really appreciate how slim it is. There were a few instances where I had forgot it was still in my pocket because of how slim and lightweight it is.

Overall, I would absolutely recommend this. But at the same time, there are countless others I could recommend too, so take that with a grain of salt. At the end of the day, yes, it will get you high.

The PCKT One Plus vaporizer retails for $59.95 and can be purchased directly from its website. As an added bonus, the good folks over at PCKT are offering KnowTechie readers an exclusive 10% discount. Just enter discount code TECHIE10 at checkout and you’ll get 10% knocked off your order.

VapeTechie showdown: The Cloudious9 Hydrology 9 vs. The Planet of the Vapes One https://knowtechie.com/vapetechie-cloudious9-hydrology-9-vs-plant-of-vapes-one/ Wed, 24 Apr 2019 19:55:33 +0000 https://knowtechie.com/?p=90642 Two vapes enter. One vape leaves.

The post VapeTechie showdown: The Cloudious9 Hydrology 9 vs. The Planet of the Vapes One appeared first on KnowTechie.

]]>
When Kevin first approached me about penning some vape reviews for the site last year, I figured I’d do a couple, maybe three at the most as a favor and then quietly pass them off to someone more suited for them — his little cousin (nephew?), maybe.

What I didn’t expect was that I’d soon be drowning in more vaporizers than I could count or even properly review. I’ve received two dry herb vapes that are almost destined to draw a comparison to one another in the past week alone, which in my mind can only mean one thing.

Vape battle.

The Competitors

In one corner, we have the Hydrology 9 by Cloudious9, a liquid filtration vaporizer designed to “revolutionize the art of smoking medical cannabis” if what you read online is to be believed. In the other, we have the simply-named One by Planet of the Vapes, which has made no such dubious claim but is likely envisioned by its creators (or its marketers) as some sort of radical disruptor of the vaping complex.

But as they say, neither can live while the other survives.

onevape vs cloudious 9

Image: KnowTechie / Kingcongraphy

Design

Though the Hydrology9’s unique design has earned it the nickname ‘lightsaber bong,’ I think it bears a far more striking resemblance to a prop from a far more culturally significant film: the ooze canister in Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 2: Secret of the Ooze.

In any case, the Hydrology9’s aircraft grade aluminum casing and borosilicate glass mouthpiece certainly set it apart as one of the more futuristic looking vapes I’ve ever reviewed. Its leakproof valve should also put any worries you have about spillage during travel to rest – that is, if you consider a device of its size (the Hydrology9 is a good 8 inches tall) a travel vape is another question entirely.

The PotV One, on the other hand, is about as discrete a vaporizer as you can get, standing only a few inches high and looking more like an old Motorola walkie-talkie phone than anything else. Of course, its convenience comes at a cost, as the One only holds about .10 -.15 grams of flower in comparison to the Hydrology9’s half a gram. The One also has a convenient display that lets the user know when it’s reaching temp, which if you read my review of the Stoner Joe, you know is a huge bonus in my eyes.

one-vape

Image: KnowTechie / Kingcongraphy

Performance

In my eyes, the “performance” aspect of a vaporizer comes down to 4 main things; battery life, ease of use, heat up time, and taste. Let’s see how these two vapes stack up against one another.

Battery Life

A full charge of the Hydrology’s 2000 mAh Lithium Polymer Battery will get you between 10-15 sessions at a 2-hour charge time. The One’s 1600mAh internal LiPo battery only runs for about 30-40 minutes per full charge at a 90-minute charge time.

Winner: Hydrology9.

Ease of Use

Although the Hydrology’s single button operation makes it far easier to operate than a lot of vapes out there, it’s the One’s clear-as-day display screen and easy-toggle temperature options that earn it the W here.

Winner: PotV One.

Heat Up Time

The PotV One takes roughly 30 seconds to heat up to your desired temperature. The Hydrology takes close to a minute, which is made all the more frustrating by the fact that it can only go for about two minutes before needing to cool down. Pathetic.

Winner: PotV One.

Taste

To be brutally honest, neither The Hydrology 9 nor the PotV One really provide anything above what I’d call “standard vape flavor.” The former’s unique filtration system ensures that you get a cool hit each time but not much else, and the latter comes with several bubbler and mouthpiece attachments that seem like a lot more hassle than they’re truly worth.

That said, I’ll give the nod to the Hydrology9 for providing a more unique experience without sacrificing those sweet plumes, brah.

Winner: Hydrology9

And the winner is…….

Image: KnowTechie / Kingcongraphy

In the battle of the Hydrology9 vs. the One, the winner really comes down to what you value more in a vape: convenience or uniqueness. The Hydrology certainly takes the latter, but at $250, it doesn’t offer much more in terms of flavor than the moderately-priced One (which currently sells for $130).

But as I’ve stated before, portable dry herb vaporizers are kind of a curse unto themselves, offering neither the convenience of their oil pen counterparts nor the buzz of more traditional methods. Based solely on that, I’d have to give the edge to the Hydrology9, which feels more like a traditional tabletop vape than its more portable counterpart.

Samples units were provided for the purpose of this review.

Review: The Grenco Science G Pen Gio — clearly the best G Pen https://knowtechie.com/review-grenco-science-g-pen-gio/ Thu, 18 Apr 2019 20:44:33 +0000 https://knowtechie.com/?p=89676 The vape pen to end all vape pens isn't even the one I was supposed to review.

The post Review: The Grenco Science G Pen Gio — clearly the best G Pen appeared first on KnowTechie.

]]>
So last week, I was sent the new G Pen Nova LXE by Grenco Science (why any business is still sending me products given the rambling, directionless, and often scathing routes my reviews tend to go, I do not know). Whether by mistake, divine intervention, or something in between, I also happened to receive the G Pen Gio.

The Nova LXE? It’s fine. Sleek, easy to use, a little messy, but overall reliable. It’s a well-placed, conservative drive down the middle of the fairway, like Yoshi in Mario Golf.

But the Gio? The Gio is the business. It’s quite possibly the greatest vape I’ve ever used, so screw it, I’m reviewing it instead.

First impressions of the Gio

What did I just say? This thing is awesome. It’s barely bigger than a USB drive, yet has a real weight to it. It’s like a Juul got in Rambo 2 shape. The Nova, on the other hand, looks like a PalmPilot pen. What’s a PalmPilot, you ask? It’s what non-techie apes like me had before we all upgraded to iPhone SEs.

grenco science gpen gio review
Image: KnowTechie / Kingcongraphy

Design/Performance

The Gio didn’t come with any instructions, but lucky for me, it couldn’t be easier to operate. Simply snap one of the Gio’s custom wax cartridges — which double as the device’s mouthpiece — into the battery and boom, you’re ready to go.

READ MORE: Review: G Pen Elite II vaporizer – simplicity at its finest

Worried about leaving the Gio on and draining its battery? You don’t have to. You don’t even have to turn the damn thing on or off. The Gio not only lasts longer than almost any portable vape I’ve tried (I’ve been using it semi-regularly for the past two weeks on a single charge of its 180mah battery), but features a buttonless activation that powers off after every usage.

Sick of fiddling between temperamental temperature controls? THE GIO HAS ONLY ONE TEMPERATURE, YOU PEON. It works every time. If you can physically inhale, you can use the Gio.

I can only assume that the Nova LXE, on the other hand, uses some run-of-the-mill battery with a 401k and a reasonable priced Honda Civic in its driveway.

Final thoughts on the G Pen Gio

BUY IT. The battery costs $19.99 and each of its 0.5-gram cartridges (currently available in 4 unique strains) go for $30-$40. Even better yet, Eaze Wellness has just made the cartridges available to ship almost anywhere in the country.

A sample unit of the G Pen Gio was provided for the purpose of this review.

Science thrives at PMI’s Cube facility in Neuchâtel, Switzerland https://knowtechie.com/pmi-cube-facility-switzerland/ Wed, 13 Mar 2019 14:32:56 +0000 https://knowtechie.com/?p=87509 Science! Vaping! Cubes!

The post Science thrives at PMI’s Cube facility in Neuchâtel, Switzerland appeared first on KnowTechie.

]]>
The vaping debate in the United States and around the world is a continuous effort to battle misinformation with science and facts. As we’ve learned, people really don’t care about science and facts. They react to memes and worst-case scenarios shouted by the loudest detractors with the least amount of empirical evidence. There are always outliers. Last year, Philip Morris International (PMI) flew me out to its Cube facility in Neuchâtel, Switzerland to take a look at some of the science behind its plan to switch smokers to vapers.

I visited the Cube back in November and if you are wondering why it’s taken me so long to put some words together about it, it’s because the place is a fucking lot. Instead of an office building filled with office drones, typing away on their standard Dell keyboards and hanging around the water cooler, this place was filled to the brim with science.

Laboratories, testing equipment, math and actual scientists (and a pretty solid cafeteria). My anxiety went into hyper-drive and frankly, I was a bit overwhelmed. I knew places like this existed, places dedicated to science, discovery and exploring ideas, but the closest I’ve ever come to one was reading a Popular Mechanics in the bathroom at an auto repair shop.

Before we get into my visit to PMI’s Cube, let’s break down how this all shakes out, business-wise

PMI is Philip Morris International, which is not the same company as Philip Morris, which is owned by Altria. Altria, feeling pressure from the growing vape industry, recently purchased a large stake of Juul, a favorite of many vape heads around the world and with its own set of problems.

Meanwhile, PMI makes something called the IQOS, which we’ve reviewed here. The IQOS is branded and sold as a cigarette cessation device, rather than a standalone vape. Yet, the United States sees it as some sort of possible threat to children, even though it is in no way marketed towards non-smokers. The Cube is where the research and development for the IQOS and other smoking cessation devices take place.

The major selling point here and one that I’ve tried to get across to as many people as possible arguing against vaping on the grounds that kids might do it is that vaping is a safer alternative to cigarettes. Period. It’s much safer than death, and it’s much easier for smokers than just quitting or trying any other therapies. It still provides the same things smokers crave; that being nicotine delivery systems along with the psychological bond between a smoker and their cigarette.

Those of you who aren’t addicted to something (good for you) think it’s so easy to just quit, without realizing the psychological impact of trying to do so. Addiction is much more than just the thing one is addicted to, it’s as much about the routine and procedure as much as anything else.

The Cube focuses on tobacco harm reduction science

I was guided through the Cube facility by the Director of Scientific & Medical Affairs R&D, Dr. Patrick Picavet, a black turtleneck wearing, long goatee having heavy metal enthusiast who has published numerous peer-reviewed papers on smoking cessation. He immediately highlighted the fact that this place was filled to the brim with over 400 experts and scientists, responsible for over four thousand patents worldwide and another six thousand pending patents.

The goal at the Cube is discovering and refining the science responsible for risk-reduction through vaping. They convinced me, that yes, a tobacco company wants to create a smoke-free future.

How did they convince me you might ask, ironically clutching your carton of cigarettes to your chest. With science of course. Scientists, by nature, are impartial. Sure, they work for a tobacco company, but that doesn’t mean they are hanging out by the mall after work offering cigarettes to kids. Instead, they are working long hours refining a process, testing and re-testing, in order to help transition a tobacco company from a peddler of death sticks to a peddler of less-harmful vaping products.

The goal isn’t just to create the products that will transition the billion or so smokers to vapers, but to bring awareness to the data and science behind it. Smoking causes harm because of combustion; the fire that jump-started man out of caves and into a productive species is the same thing that is killing smokers. By creating products that eliminate combustion, PMI is hoping to inform the smoking-addicted public that taking up vaping can be just as satisfactory without anything near the amount of harm. An endless stream of research papers and science helps, but the public needs more than a bunch of math they don’t understand.

They need the science to do the work for them, then to be presented with a product that mimics smoking, without the harmful effects. This is Platform 1 of the Cube’s scientific approach. In this development platform, combustion is named as the problem to be solved. With the IQOS, it has been solved by eliminating all the harmful chemicals created by combustion. Within this platform, things like indoor air quality are tested, along with the actual levels of chemicals released by burning or by heating.

There is testing done in oxygen rich and oxygen deprived atmospheres, in cool labs with tech built for these specific purposes. The takeaway here is that heating tobacco versus burning it releases significantly fewer chemicals into your body and the air around you. Plus, you don’t stink. Here’s a visualization.

Heating vs. Burning

This leads to a toxicological assessment that seeks to demonstrate that the toxicity of the aerosol from smoke-free products is lower than that of cigarette smoke. And guess what? It is. From there we switch to learning about the clinical assessments, that show the changes in human physiology when it comes to reduced exposure to harmful chemicals and the response within the blood chemistry and functional health systems of human subjects.

Smokers who switched to Platform 1 (the IQOS) flat out saw a sea change in the harmful chemicals they were ingesting. All these clinical studies are registered on clinicaltrials.gov and list a bunch of chemicals that are super bad for you if you smoke and simply cease to exist if you switch to vaping.

Reduced exposure to chemicals created by combustion has a positive impact on smokers’ health risks. By switching to vaping, lipid metabolism, inflammation, endothelial dysfunction, clotting, oxidative stress, acute effect, airway impairment, genotoxicity all experience favorable changes when switching to vaping as a smoking cessation device.

I don’t know what all that stuff means. I’m not a doctor. After asking a generality, it basically means that smokers’ risks of things like cardiovascular (that’s your heart dummy) and cancer drop significantly when switching away from burning cigarettes.

Switching to vaping = less harmful chemicals = living longer

The thing is, and you can prove this by just talking to the smokers you know, is that smokers don’t want to just quit smoking or use something with the intent of quitting completely. The addiction is too strong, the psychological attachment is too strong. The scientists at the Cube know this and work that knowledge into their research. The focus isn’t to eventually funnel smokers into quitters (my daddy didn’t raise no quitter) but into vapers. Because, where’s the business sense in spending billions on researching smoking alternatives if it doesn’t result in converting current cigarette customers to vape customers?

Listen, the best I can do to explain the overwhelming science at the Cube is that it has a purpose. It’s not just science for the sake of science. These scientists work hard to prove and show through research studies and tests that smoking cessation is a real and viable option for smokers, as well as a new and viable business model for PMI and possibly its American counterpart, Altria. They are working to show, through science, that a tobacco company can still remain a tobacco company and deliver its product to the populace but via a delivery system that takes advantage of advances in science and technology with a fraction of the harm. A vape-using customer will be so a lot longer than a cigarette-smoking one.

You can take your own interactive tour of the Cube if you so desire, and check out all the cool science stuff that is working to extend the lives of smokers by proving that vaping is the future of nicotine and tobacco consumption. You can read more about the science being scienced at the Cube here if you like graphs, charts and science words. Side note: I totally want to move to Neuchâtel now. That place is just amazing.

What do you think? Are you a smoker that has switched to vaping? What do you think of PMI’s research? Let us know down below in the comments or carry the discussion over to our Twitter or Facebook.

The Good
Beautifully packaged
Easy to operate
Doesn't overheat in your hands
The Bad
Incredibly short battery life
Small herb chamber
7.7
Overall

I don’t know what’s to blame for the wave of pretentiousness surrounding even the most minor advancements in tech these days (my top two guesses: Steve Jobs and the ghost of Steve Jobs), but all I know is that we are reaching George Clooney acceptance speech-levels of smugness at a breakneck pace. Tech products aren’t created to solve a problem anymore; they’re created to change the world.

The DaVinci MIQRO personal vaporizer is no different, right down to its wiqed qool, wiqed qlean name. Try not to puke in your mouth a little while reading the description written on this thing’s (admittedly gorgeous) packaging:

Leonardo DaVinci bravely defied conventional wisdom, re-imagining and reshaping the world around him. DAVINCI honors his legacy of innovation with tireless craftsmanship and design. Get ready to experience vapor in a whole new way.

I’ve just come to the heartbreaking revelation that the actual da Vinci would totally be a vape bro if he was alive today, his hair manbunned and his Mona Lisa shrouded behind the fattest goddamn ploom you’ve ever seen. And now I’m sad.

First impressions of the DaVinci MIQRO

Pretentious name and description aside, the MIQRO arrived in what is easily the nicest packaging I’ve ever seen for a vaporizer, right down to a carved wood case that would make Jesse Pinkman green with jealous rage. I mean, just look at that picture above. I’d dig up my family’s prized pet bird from his current grave just to rebury him in that thing. (God, I miss you so much, Mr. Peeps.)

The MIQRO also comes with a whole slew of goodies and extras, including a grinder card for discretely breaking up your herb on the go, a second 900 wAh battery (which you’ll need, as the battery life of the MIQRO isn’t exactly resilient) and a carrying case.

Design

For such an “innovative” company as DaVinci claims to be, it really didn’t do much to make the MIQRO stand out (from a purely aesthetic standpoint, at least). I couldn’t pick it out of a lineup of PAXs or Vapiums or any modern portable herb vaporizer, really, save for its size. I mean, where’s the imagination? Where’s the creativity? Where’s the mildly racist cartoon bunny rabbit mascot?!

Once you get under the hood, however, the MIQRO actually offers a couple cool features that help set it apart from its peers. For starters, its ceramic herb chamber/oven is located at the bottom of the vape, making it virtually impossible to pull any herb through during a session. And if you’re sick of all the, for lack of a better term, vapor-less vaporizers currently flooding the market, look no further than the MIQRO’s built-in zirconium tamper (dubbed the “Pearl”) to solve all your vapor density issues.

Performance

The MIQRO offers a variety of heating temperatures ranging from a fairly standard range of 350 – 430 degrees, which can be accessed via “Precision Mode,” as well as four “Smart Path” presets that should satisfy most regular vape users. The Pearl certainly does its job in regards to the density of each hit, ensuring that each session burns as cleanly and evenly as possible.

Unfortunately, the MIQRO doesn’t exactly have what you’d call “staying power.” In an effort to compensate for its size, DaVinci replaced the 18650 900 mAh battery found in its other models with the more modest 18350, making the MIQRO’s average lifespan about as long as the pet goldfish you took home to feed your prized family bird. Only exacerbating things is the fact that you’ll need to have the MIQRO set to its highest Smart Path in order to get full, satisfying vapor every hit, and that it takes between 60-120 minutes just to charge it up again.

Final thoughts on the MIQRO

Unlike Curtis, I wasn’t exactly blown away by the MIQRO, though that’s not to say it isn’t a well-built vape for the most part. Will it change the way you think about vaporizers or any other such pretentious nonsense? Probably not.

At $200 a pop, there are certainly other, more moderately priced vaporizers out there that offer a similar experience, but to quote the man himself, “Art is never finished, only abandoned. Now watch me puff a siiick ploom while I hit this Kickflip McTwist.”
