Is it okay to keep my computer near the window? https://knowtechie.com/is-it-okay-to-keep-my-computer-near-the-window/ Mon, 05 Dec 2022 06:59:21 +0000 https://knowtechie.com/?p=122026 If you have limited space, you may have some concerns about leaving electronics near the window.

The post Is it okay to keep my computer near the window? appeared first on KnowTechie.

]]>

Quick Answer: Generally, keeping your computer near a window is fine as long as it is not in direct sunlight. Direct sunlight can cause the temperature inside your computer to rise, damaging the internal components. Keep it away from any moisture too.

When you create an office area to work from home, you’re often limited in where you can fit your desk. I mean, not everyone can custom-build their room, right?

That often means that the only place that you can fit the desk is near a window.

You might be worried that having your computer near that window could damage it, either with moisture in the air or heat from sunlight.

Maybe you’ve seen all the dust floating around in the air while rays of sunlight come in through the window?

Regardless, we’re here to answer some of these pressing questions.

So, can I keep my computer in front or near a window?

Short answer: Sure, but watch the forecast for rain if you have the window open.

Modern electronics are rated for use in high humidity, so unless you’ve condensing moisture around your computer, you’re fine to have it next to a window, even if it is open.

There are a few things to think about, though.

If direct sunlight is on the PC case, you’ll see higher operating temperatures than if it was shaded.

Bright light might make your mouse work erratically if it’s got an optical sensor. Oh, and the UV light could change the color of any plastic parts of your case.

Dust could also be an issue, so make sure your PC has filters on all fan intakes, and dust the inside with compressed air regularly, and you should be fine.

Yes, it’s bad to put a computer in front of a window

So there you have it; avoid placing your PC in front of a window.

And while you’re at it, it’s also a good idea to keep your computer away from sources of heat and moisture, such as radiators or humidifiers.

Maintaining a stable and consistent environment for your computer is important to ensure its proper functioning and longevity.

Why Microsoft Voice Access is Windows 11’s best feature https://knowtechie.com/why-microsoft-voice-access-is-windows-11s-best-feature/ Mon, 10 Oct 2022 16:57:36 +0000 https://knowtechie.com/?p=246988 The best part about Microsoft Voice Access is that you don’t need to spend a fortune to access it.

The post Why Microsoft Voice Access is Windows 11’s best feature appeared first on KnowTechie.

]]>
Earlier this month, Microsoft released the latest version of Windows 11 — the snappily-named Windows 11 22H2.

As updates go, it’s a big one. By prioritizing usability, the latest version of Redmond’s desktop OS feels slicker than ever.

This post isn’t a round-up of the latest and greatest features. I want to talk about just one: Microsoft Voice Access.

Talking to my Laptop

windows 11 voice access screen on a purple background
Image: KnowTechie

Microsoft Voice Access first appeared on the Insider Dev Channel in January. The feature is a necessary accessibility tool.

In short, it’s a way to control your computer by barking commands through a microphone. You can switch apps, press icons, and select drop-down menus without touching a keyboard or mouse.

Microsoft Voice Access is a game changer for people with mobility or sight impairments.

Sure, other companies offer similar functionality. Nuance’s Dragon Naturally Speaking is a great example. But those products are expensive. This feature is free.

Best of all: it’s (relatively) application agnostic. Microsoft Voice Access doesn’t require developers to integrate the tech into their applications. A few minor exceptions notwithstanding, it just works

Dictating Documents

Microsoft Voice Access also expands upon Windows’ existing voice-to-text technology. For the first time, users can dictate entire documents with startling accuracy.

Voice recognition has long been a Windows shortcoming. It’s something Apple does exceptionally well — especially if you own a new Apple Silicon computer. But not anymore.

When it comes to the important metrics (transcription speed, accuracy, and the ability to narrate unbroken passages without having to manually adjust the text), Windows 11 22H2 rivals or exceeds MacOS Monterey

I’ll be transparent with you. I have a vested interest here

I have ADHD and dyspraxia. Both conditions affect focus. By dictating articles, I’m able to stave off distractions. It’s a tool — like medication — that allows me to control these conditions.

I use both macOS and Windows laptops for work. For obvious reasons, I’m vastly more productive when using my shiny M1 MacBook Pro than my (equally expensive) Windows 11 gaming laptop

And that’s a shame. There are some situations where it makes sense to use my Windows laptop. I don’t want to split my work across two machines if I’m reviewing a game or a Windows-specific gadget.

Evolution not Revolution

Admittedly, Windows has long included native voice-to-text functionality. The first version appeared in the much-maligned Windows Vista, six years before Apple followed suit in Mac OS X 10.9 Yosemite.

The first version gave Nuance little to fear. It was comically inaccurate.

Windows Visa could barely handle crisp American voices, let alone regional accents. Its shortcomings were glaringly apparent to anyone who used it.

Sure, Apple was a latecomer, but it improved. Microsoft didn’t.

For many people, Microsoft Voice Access will be the first time they’ve attempted to use Windows’ native voice recognition technology since the turbulent days of Windows Vista. And I think they’ll be pleasantly surprised.

It comprehends Northern English accents. If I talk with a steady clip, Windows 11 keeps pace. Most importantly: it’s accurate.

Microsoft Voice Access also benefits from substantial lexicography. It recognizes slang terms and field-specific jargon. In practice, this means you can dictate more complex bodies of work.

Mileage May Vary

setup windows 11 voice access on purple background
Image: KnowTechie

There’s another reason why I like Microsoft Voice Access so much. You don’t need to spend a fortune to access it.

By contrast, MacOS’ voice dictation only really works if you have an M1 or M2 Mac. Those with older Intel machines suffer from worse transcription accuracy and are limited to one-minute dictation sessions.

Put simply: it feels like a more universal solution.

Microsoft’s offering is even more impressive when you consider that most Intel CPUs don’t also include a dedicated AI accelerator (an NPU, or Neural Processing Unit). Apple Silicon does.

Ready to try Microsoft Voice Access? You’ll find a quick-start guide here

And I’m curious about your experience. As mentioned, I have a pretty capable machine. It packs a dedicated GPU, an 11th-generation CPU, and plenty of RAM.

In short, all the ingredients you need to tackle complicated AI tasks.

How will Microsoft Voice Access work on more austere computers? Or on an ARM-based Snapdragon PC?

Qualcomm’s Snapdragon platforms are glacially slow for most computing tasks, but they benefit from a dedicated NPU. Will this give them an advantage over similarly-priced Intel machines?

I’m hoping you’ll tell me. Drop me a Tweet here

Why is my PC not detecting my graphics card? https://knowtechie.com/why-is-my-pc-not-detecting-my-graphics-card/ Sun, 09 Oct 2022 14:16:00 +0000 https://knowtechie.com/?p=245828 Hopefully, one of these tips will solve your problem and let you get back to doing what you enjoy.

The post Why is my PC not detecting my graphics card? appeared first on KnowTechie.

Everything from gaming to streaming video requires the services of a graphics card. Some devices may offer integrated graphics hardware but will never have the power of a separate card.

What do you do when trying to install a new graphics card and your PC won’t detect it?

Here are some troubleshooting tips to help you figure out the source of the problem and find a solution.

Device manager

windows device manager detect graphics card
Image: KnowTechie

The device manager is the first thing to check when dealing with a PC that isn’t detecting new hardware.

Thankfully, most modern computers come with an integrated graphics card, so you can still work on the machine even if it doesn’t see yours.

Check under the display adapters tab. You should see your graphics card. If you do, try right-clicking on and enabling it. Then switch your monitor input to the card’s ports to see if that solves the problem.

If you don’t see it listed under display adapters or it still isn’t transmitting video after enabling, you’ll need to do some more troubleshooting.

Outdated drivers

graphics card pc drivers
Image: KnowTechie

Computers and the tech that supports them appear in nearly every industry, from the console the nurse uses to check your vitals to the smart boards in your local school.

About 81% of teachers see great value in digital learning tools, but they’re only effective if they work.

Another troubleshooting tip is to check for software problems. In most cases, all the information you need to keep these machines running smoothly is right at your fingertips.

If your drivers are outdated, your graphics card will either function incorrectly or stop detecting altogether. You may need to update your existing drivers or install new ones.

The easiest way to complete this troubleshooting step is to go to your card manufacturer’s website and download the most up-to-date drivers for your GPU model.

Your graphics card should function once you’ve installed them. If it doesn’t, move on to the next troubleshooting tip.

Editor’s Recommendation

To fix various PC problems, we recommend DriverFix

This software will keep your drivers up and running, thus keeping you safe from common computer errors and hardware failures. Running this application will automatically install all relevant drivers.

BIOS updates

Modern computers refer to the BIOS settings as UEFI, but the former term has become so well known that they’ve become interchangeable.

Going into the BIOS/UEFI settings might solve things if your motherboard is the problem. Look for the GPU in your BIOS settings.

You should be able to enable it if it appears. You’ll need to switch to hardware troubleshooting if it doesn’t.

Plugs and sockets

If the device manager and BIOS menu aren’t detecting your graphics card, hardware failure might be to blame.

Before you rush out to buy a new motherboard or graphics card, start with the basics — make sure everything is plugged in.

The power cords running to the graphics card from your power supply should be well seated, and the card must be placed correctly in its PCIe x16 slot.

Something as simple as not pushing the card far enough could cause all these problems.

Power supplies

computer power supply unit (psu)
Image: Joe Rice-Jones / KnowTechie

You may find yourself staring at a black screen if your power supply (PSU) doesn’t generate enough energy to handle your GPU’s demands.

You don’t need the most powerful PSU, especially if you’re just into some casual gaming or streaming.

Still, you should have something capable of handling your GPU’s highest demands without interfering with the machine’s operations.

It’s also good to ensure your graphics card is getting power. You should be able to see this when you start the computer.

Even if your PC isn’t detecting the card, providing power to it should cause the cooling fan to start spinning and any equipped LEDs to illuminate.

If everything is plugged in and you’re not getting power, it could be a problem with your PSU instead of the graphics card.

Other hardware problems

zotac graphics card
Image: Joe Rice-Jones / KnowTechie

If you’ve gone through all these troubleshooting steps and your PC is still not detecting your graphics card, there could be another hardware failure.

Try installing the graphics card on another computer to see if the fault lies with the GPU. If the card works, it could indicate a different hardware issue in your PC.

Troubleshooting these issues can be challenging, especially if you’re unsure where the problem might lie.

To fix various PC problems, we recommend DriverFix

This software will keep your drivers up and running, thus keeping you safe from common computer errors and hardware failures. Check all your drivers now in three easy steps:

  1. Download DriverFix (verified download file)
  2. Click Start Scan to find all problematic driers
  3. Click Update Drivers to get new versions and avoid system malfunctioning.

Running these applications will automatically install the relevant drivers, and you can further update them from the same place.

Get your graphics card back on track

No one wants to spend a ton of money on a graphics card only to have it not work with their PC. Hopefully, one of these tips will solve your problem and let you get back to doing what you enjoy.

How to update your PCs BIOS to help protect yourself https://knowtechie.com/update-your-bios/ Sun, 25 Sep 2022 22:30:00 +0000 https://knowtechie.com/?p=63203 Even though it's slightly more involved than a standard operating system update, you don't need to be afraid to update your BIOS.

The post How to update your PCs BIOS to help protect yourself appeared first on KnowTechie.

It feels like we can’t look at the news nowadays without seeing reports of big, scary vulnerabilities that affect your system’s core components.

Previously, Microsoft and Google announced issues – Rogue System Register Read and Speculative Store Bypass – which are technical variants of the Spectre and Meltdown vulnerabilities.

So what does this mean for you? Well, it probably means that you’ll have some updates to deal with for your CPU, likely delivered in the form of a firmware update for your system.

This is conventionally called a BIOS update, though you’re more likely updating your Unified Extensible Firmware Interface, or UEFI, instead.

If this all sounds Greek to you, don’t worry. Even though it’s slightly more involved than a standard operating system update, you don’t need to be afraid to update your BIOS.

Thankfully, it’s a pretty easy process nowadays. Here’s how to do it.

Mac users have it easy

Okay, so if you’re a Mac user concerned about missing security updates that address the hardware issues in the news – don’t worry.

The App Store will automatically download system updates for you if you tell it to, or you could check it regularly if you don’t like the autoroute.

Apple makes this process painless, one of the benefits of having a closed ecosystem.

Windows users, not so much

how to bios
Image: Lifewire

Make some coffee and sit comfortably, you might be here a while. Updating your system’s firmware isn’t terrible, but it’s not as easy as on a Mac. First things first, check Windows Update.

That won’t update the motherboard BIOS, but it will update all your system files to include any bug fixes or security updates.

If you’re a laptop user, the best way to get any driver or BIOS update files is to go to the manufacturer’s website and look for the support section.

You’ll probably need to know the exact make and model of the laptop you’re using, which will likely be on a sticker on the underside of your machine.

Suppose your laptop is already registered with the manufacturer. In that case, sign into your account on their website and look at the section of your account that talks about registered devices.

Each manufacturer hosts updates in different locations on their sites, so this might require a little searching.

If luck is on your side, your laptop manufacturer will offer some kind of software utility that will help you find out what drivers and updates you need for your machine.

There might also be a BIOS update utility to make updating that easier.

bios

There are a million different laptops, and the process of updating your BIOS could vary even with the same manufacturer.

If your manufacturer doesn’t have their own utility for running all your updates for you, you’ll want to look for the latest BIOS file at a minimum.

Whether that update then gets installed using a special utility or a tool like Rufus to make a bootable USB key and run the BIOS update from MS-DOS, that’s entirely at the whim of how your laptop manufacturer handles these kinds of updates.

If you’re on a desktop PC, you also have a few options for updating. Your system’s manufacturer might offer BIOS updates, especially if you bought a pre-built system.

Editor’s Recommendation

This software will keep your drivers up and running, thus keeping you safe from common computer errors and hardware failures. Running this application will automatically install all relevant drivers.

If so, it’s the same route as for laptop users. You might also have to hunt down your motherboard’s manufacturer to get BIOS updates that way, this is mainly for if you built your system yourself.

If you don’t know which motherboard is in your system – hit the Windows Key + R, type in ‘msinfo32,’ and look for the System Manufacturer and System Model listings.

If this doesn’t show enough specifics, you can use a third-party app such as CPU-Z or HWInfo to help you out.

bios

Once you’ve figured out your manufacturer and model number, search for the corresponding support page on the manufacturer’s website.

Just like with the laptop instructions, you’ll be looking for the driver’s page for your motherboard and then either a utility that will update your drivers and firmware for you, a BIOS file, or a combination BIOS file and flashing utility.

Depending on your file, your process for updating the BIOS will differ.

Mostly you’ll find yourself running either a utility directly out of Windows or copying the file to a USB drive, rebooting your computer, hammering the DEL key (or whatever key your system uses) during POST to enter BIOS and flash the updated BIOS file onto the motherboard.

Sometimes this can be a bit hard to find, on my Gigabyte motherboard, it’s a little popup on the bottom of the screen.

If you’re overclocking on your system, use the BIOS reset selection to put everything to a stock configuration before the update.

Your motherboard manufacturer will have documentation on how best to do this for the specific board.

I recommend looking on their support pages for the right steps, as there might be something I’ve not mentioned here.

Just an FYI – BIOS updates can be a bit scary

windows 11 don't check for updates
Image: KnowTechie

Just so you’re aware, BIOS updates are deceptively simple and also something you don’t want to mess around with – if something goes wrong, it’ll go wrong big time.

Before running the BIOS update, make sure you back up your important files, just in case. You could also use Macrium Reflect to make a system image if you have enough space on a secondary drive.

Make sure your laptop is plugged into a power socket, not on battery power, and do not turn off or reboot your desktop or laptop during the updating process unless the update utility tells you that it is safe to do so.

After the update is finished, you might need to boot back into your system’s BIOS – usually by button mashing DEL or F2 as it boots – and reset whatever settings were previously configured.

You’ll also probably have to redo any fan settings you had, and you can go ahead and apply any overclocks that you previously had.

Presuming that your system manufacturer is similar to most, you’ll have to find out about BIOS updates by checking your manufacturer’s support page regularly unless you’re running an auto-update program.

A good way to ensure this is to make a recurring reminder in your favorite calendar, so you don’t miss out on anything critical for your key components.

How to choose the best CD-DVD ROM drivers for your computer? https://knowtechie.com/choose-cd-dvd-rom-drivers-computer/ Sun, 25 Sep 2022 10:04:00 +0000 https://knowtechie.com/?p=55740 If you need your DVD ROM to operate smoothly, do not hesitate to update your drivers. Here's where to find them.

The post How to choose the best CD-DVD ROM drivers for your computer? appeared first on KnowTechie.

]]>
You will likely forget about your CD-DVD ROM until you have problems with it. Really, who needs a DVD ROM today?

DVDs or CDs are not a very convenient device to place information on – you need to perform several actions, and need special software to put information on it.

However, sometimes you need the CD-DVD ROM, and thus you need to maintain it in good condition. And the best way to do this is to install a fresh drive.

Actually, all you need to do to download a driver for Windows is find the model and manufacturer of your device and find a reliable source for this driver.

How to Define the Manufacturer and Model of Your PC’s CD-DVD ROM?

For Windows users, you need to take the following steps:

  • Enter My Computer
  • Press Properties button
  • Press Device Manager on the left side of the window
  • Open the list on the DVD drives line

There you will see the manufacturer and model of your drive. After you have defined this, you can download and install the necessary drivers.

How to Download and Install DVD ROM Drivers on Your PC?

After you have defined all data on your device, you need to download a driver for Windows 8, 10, or 11 on the manufacturer’s website or another reliable resource.

If you successfully download a driver for Windows 7, 8, 10, or 11 on your PC, all you have to do is install it.

From here, launch the installation pack and wait until the installation is completed. All that’s left is rebooting your computer.

Editor’s Recommendation

To fix various PC problems, we recommend DriverFix

This software will keep your drivers up and running, thus keeping you safe from common computer errors and hardware failures. Running this application will automatically install all relevant drivers.

Why Do You Need to Update Drivers?

When you download any driver for Windows and install it your device gets new fresh data on how to operate on your PC more effectively.

Usually, drivers are released to make the device even more compatible, fix the bags that have appeared previously, and ensure that it operates at the peak of efficiency.

So if you need your DVD ROM to operate smoothly, do not hesitate to update your drivers.

Will Your CD-DVD ROM Work Properly Without Update?

It probably will. Actually, DVD ROM is not the kind of device that requires much adjusting.

However, it is still better to download and install the necessary driver, as you never mean when you will need proper ROM.

For example, you may need to burn a Live CD for Windows, Linux, or Mac.

Of course, you can use a flash drive to do this. However, it is known that it is a bit harder to use a flash drive for this purpose, and moreover, flash drives are much more expensive than CDs or DVDs.

So, it is better to use those as dynamic storage devices than as live CDs.

How to Update Drivers Automatically?

When it comes to devices like CD or DVD ROM drivers, we often forget about making updates manually, which is understandable. Moreover, many laptops today are delivered without the corresponding drive.

So, to keep such device drivers up to date, it is better to have an automated driver update tool.

As a result, it will notify you about the updates, and you will only have to press approve button to keep all your software for hardware up-to-date.

The post How to download the Windows 11 2022 Update appeared first on KnowTechie.

]]>
Microsoft has released the first major update to Windows 11. Named the Windows 11 2022 Update, it’s on the way to all computers running Windows 11 and Windows 10.

The update brings a whole bunch of new features and tools to the Windows operating system. So, how do you get the new update?

Windows should download the update automatically and prompt you to install it. That’s true for most cases, but we know Windows doesn’t always do what it’s supposed to.

If you want the Windows 11 2022 Update right now, here’s how to manually update.

How to update your PC to the Windows 11 2022 Update

You can update to the 22H2 update of Windows 11 from either Windows 11 or Windows 10. For Windows 10 users, you’ll want to use the PC Health Check app to ensure your PC can run Windows 11.

  1. For Windows 11 users:

Open Start menu and search for Settings. Click on the app to open it.windows 11 settings search

  2. Click on Windows Update.

  3. Click on Check for updates, then select Download & install when you see the “Windows 11 version 22H2 is available” bannerwindows 11 update

  4. Wait while the update installs, and then restart when prompted.

  5. For Windows 10 users:

Open Settings by right-clicking on the Windows icon and selecting it from the list.settings menu on windows 10

  6. Click on Update & Security.windows 10 settings

  7. Click Check for updates, then click the Download and install button in the top bannerwindows 10 update

  8. Follow any instructions as Windows installs the update, then reboot your computer.

Now you’re all updated and on the Windows 11 2022 Update. This update has multiple new productivity, accessibility, and security features, along with some other goodies.

We’ll follow up with coverage of exactly what’s included and how to use some of the new features. But for a complete rundown on everything Microsoft included in the update, head on over to the company’s blog post here.

Razer launches new $99 Leviathan V2 X soundbar for PCs https://knowtechie.com/razer-launches-new-99-leviathan-v2-x-soundbar-for-pcs/ Wed, 21 Sep 2022 14:27:40 +0000 https://knowtechie.com/?p=240830 Razer shrinks the Leviathan soundbar for V2. It's got a smaller price tag, too.

The post Razer launches new $99 Leviathan V2 X soundbar for PCs appeared first on KnowTechie.

Razer has added a new soundbar to its range of audio gear—the $99 Leviathan V2 X. The standalone soundbar is smaller than the existing Leviathan, making it an unobtrusive way to add speakers to your PC.

The new Leviathan V2 X PC loses some of the audio quality that the bigger, more expensive cousin has. For instance, you don’t get a subwoofer or THX Spatial Audio.

What you do get are two full-range racetrack drivers and two passive bass radiators. The baby Leviathan also connects to your PC using USB-C with Power Delivery.

The soundbar also has Bluetooth 5.0, so you can connect your smartphone and other devices.

Razer says that the sound output of the new soundbar will be dependent on what device is plugged into the USB-C port. The max output is 90 dB at one meter away from the soundbar.

The nice thing is that you can power it from a wall socket, but you’ll have to provide your own USB-C charger. It’s only 400mm long, giving even the smallest desks a chance at full-sized speakers.

It wouldn’t be a Razer device without a mention of Chroma RGB, the company’s signature lighting system. Sadly, you get fewer lighting zones here, at 14 (vs. 16 on the larger Leviathan).

The soundbar is 4/5ths the size, though, so you end up with smaller lighting sections which might suit some color patterns better.

For under a hundred bucks, this looks to be good value. It brings stereo sound to your PC, and you can always use Window’s inbuilt spatial sound to give it some more presence.

You can preorder the $99 Razer Leviathan V2 X PC now, with Razer starting shipping on September 28.

6 myths of building your own PC https://knowtechie.com/6-myths-of-building-your-own-pc/ Sun, 03 Jul 2022 12:56:00 +0000 https://knowtechie.com/?p=212869 Now that these PC-building myths have been debunked, you can get started with confidence.

The post 6 myths of building your own PC appeared first on KnowTechie.

]]>
Many people dream of building their own custom gaming PC but worry about the countless myths and horror stories that float around the internet.

Most have heard about builds gone wrong, ending in broken parts, wasted money, and tears over an RGB keyboard

Building your own PC isn’t half as risky and complex as these tales can make it out to be, though. Building a PC is easy and straightforward with the right approach and knowledge.

Take a look at six of the most common myths about building a gaming PC so you can get started without fear or preventable accidents.

1. It’s extremely complicated

curtis silver gaming pc cooler
Image: Curtis Silver / KnowTechie

This is the most common misconception about building a gaming PC by far. Most people don’t know how the inner workings of their computers operate, so it is only natural to assume it’s too complex for a beginner.

This is not the case, however. In fact, it’s no more difficult than building a LEGO set. You just need the right instructions and parts, and everything pretty much clicks together one piece at a time.

Building your own PC comes down to two main stages: choosing the parts and putting them together. Luckily, every PC uses the same basic set of components and basic building process.

Once you know what pieces you need and what they do, things are very straightforward.

2. Prebuilt PCs are a better deal

cyberpower gaming pc
Image: KnowTechie

Too many people fall for the prebuilt PC trap, especially budget gamers. A prebuilt PC is usually not the way to go if you’re looking for the best graphics for your money.

As a general rule, they are rarely a better deal. Of course, there are some great prebuilt PCs out there. However, you could build the same one for less money yourself.

Prebuilt versions have to tack on labor charges, so you’re paying more to have someone spend a couple of hours doing something you could do for free.

Plus, shipping will likely be dangerous and expensive since the whole unit is shipped at once.

Instead of paying someone to build your PC, you could put those extra dollars toward better parts or even games.

3. Building a PC is risky

maingear new vybe gaming pc
Image: Maingear

A common fear among hesitant PC builders is that they could break their parts during the building process.

It’s only natural to worry about these things, especially after pouring hundreds or thousands of dollars into your parts. Some may even worry about their physical safety when building their own electronic device.

In reality, though, PC building is safe for you and your parts as long as you take basic intuitive precautions.

For example, don’t connect your power supply to your PC during the building process — then you don’t need to worry about electrical burns.

Plus, even when your computer is plugged in, it only uses around 110 volts of power, whereas serious injury is primarily only caused by voltages of 500 or more. Basically, there’s virtually no risk of injury to yourself when building your system.

Set up a static-safe workspace, and your parts will be safe, too. You can do this by simply laying out some cardboard to build on and wearing an anti-static bracelet.

Plug in your power supply, keeping it disconnected from everything else, and turn it off. Clip your bracelet to something metal on the PSU, such as the fan slits, and you’re grounded and good to go.

It’s that easy. Most PC parts are fairly sturdy and difficult to break as long as they are installed properly.

4. You need a GPU

amd navi gpu chip in future samsung phones
Image: AMD

One of today’s most common PC building woes is the price of GPUs.

Computer chip shortages, crypto mining, and scalping have jacked up the cost far above the usual MSRP. Budget gamers often think they can’t build a PC because a graphics card would be too expensive

Contrary to popular belief, you don’t need a dedicated graphics card to build a great gaming PC. You can go with a high-performance CPU with integrated graphics instead. As a general rule, though, AMD’s integrated graphics tend to outperform Intel’s.

Budget gamers should opt for something like the AMD Ryzen 5600G, which can happily run most games you throw at it, from beefed up “Minecraft” mods to “Halo” and even esports titles.

The graphics performance is comparable to a GTX 1650 in regular gameplay.

Will a GPU-less PC outperform an RTX 3080? No, of course not. However, it will perform great for gamers who are trying to build on a budget, and that’s what counts.

5. 500 GB of storage is fine

gift-guide Wd_black sn850 nvme ssd with heatsink
Image: KnowTechie

Insufficient storage is mainly a problem in budget builds and prebuilts, but it’s something to look out for. You will be shocked how fast you fill up 500 GB of storage.

A few of today’s most popular games will eat it all up in no time. For example, “Sea of Thieves” alone needs almost 100 GB of storage space.

You probably want to play more than four games if you’re building your own gaming PC. Never settle for 500 GB of storage. The extra money for 1 or 2 TB of storage will be worth it.

6. It’s fine to put your PC on the floor

This is less a building myth and more a caretaking myth, but it is still a big problem in the gaming community.

Don’t put your PC on the floor. It’d be better to place it on top of your fridge, in the middle of your coffee table, or literally anywhere else.

Dust is the enemy of custom PCs. It will get sucked in by your cooling fans, make a mess, and potentially even slow down or damage your carefully assembled parts.

There’s way more dust and debris on the floor than on your desk. Get a side table or stand for your PC if your desk is too small.

This applies to the building process, too. Never put your PC together on the floor, especially not on carpet or any fabric surface.

This is a recipe for a static disaster. It’s also a quick and dirty way to lose parts like the tiny screws for your PCIe slots.

Building your own PC fearlessly

You don’t need to be a computer genius to build your own custom gaming PC. You don’t need the fanciest parts on the market or a special facility, either.

There are some things to look out for in the building process, but it is actually very straightforward. Choosing your parts is easier than you think and can even be a lot of fun once you understand what components you need.

Now that these PC-building myths have been debunked, you can get started with confidence.

The Good
Good price
Adjustable stand is really convenient
Good picture color and quality
Picture looks really good using the preset "Movie" mode
The Bad
4ms response time could be a little better
Other viewing modes seemed to have washed-out colors and underwhelming brightness
8.3
Overall

A good gaming monitor can be a pretty expensive purchase. Even some average-sized 1080P monitors can sometimes set you back well north of $200. But Viotek looks to break the mold of overpriced monitors with its GFI 24-inch gaming monitor.

This 24-inch gaming monitor (model GFI24CBA) features a 144hz refresh rate 1080P IPS panel. It has a 4 ms response time and comes in at just $169.99 on Amazon and the company’s website.

I’ve been using this monitor for a mix of gaming and work over the last couple of weeks. I generally go for 1440P resolution when gaming, so this was a bit of a step back in that regard. But for the price, I’ve been pleasantly surprised by the Viotek GFI24CBA.

Features

viotek 24 inch gaming monitor back
Image: Alex Gatewood / KnowTechie

When you open the box of the GFI24CBA, you’re greeted similarly to opening any other monitor. There’s the monitor, a stand, a DisplayPort cable, a power cable, and a user manual.

You do technically have to assemble the monitor, though it’s pretty easy to do. There are a few Phillips-head screws that attach the base to the monitor stand. Then, there are four screws that attach the stand to the back of the monitor.

Everything lines up perfectly and assembling the monitor really is a breeze as long as you have a screwdriver handy. Once you’ve done that, you’re ready to hook up the power and start using the monitor.

As I said, the GFI24CBA comes with an HDMI cable that you can use. But there’s also a DisplayPort connection on the monitor that you can use instead. Both options can handle 1080P at 144hz, so as long as you have one of those ports available on your computer, you’re good to go.

The adjustable stand on the GFI24CBA is a huge win for this monitor, considering its affordable price.

The stand adjusts in four different ways: height, angled forward and back, angled left and right, and it even rotates. It will easily rotate 90 degrees so you can use it in portrait mode if you want.

When it comes to performance, this gaming monitor offers a great bang for its buck

viotek 24 inch monitor angle
Image: Alex Gatewood / KnowTechie

Remember, this is a $169.99 monitor, so you’re not getting the best specs, even for 1080P gaming.

But the IPS panel on this monitor is perfectly acceptable, even for competitive games. It features a 144Hz refresh rate with a 4ms response time. That response time is not the best you can get. You can find other 1080P monitors that have a 1ms response time, though they’ll likely be a bit more expensive.

And to be honest, it’s hard to tell a difference between the two. Unless you are a hardcore competitive gamer, you likely won’t be able to tell any kind of difference between 1ms and 4ms. I certainly never noticed any issues, even in competitive games like Valorant and League of Legends.

The color and brightness of the monitor are high points for a monitor of this price. It features a 98 percent sRGB color range, which is perfectly acceptable for a monitor of this caliber. And there are seven different preset viewing modes, so you can easily find a setting that looks best for you.

Personally, I liked using the monitor in “Movie” mode. All of the other modes seemed to have slightly washed-out colors and underwhelming brightness in an attempt to optimize for specific kinds of games.

You can also adjust the picture settings on the GFI24CBA yourself using the single button on the back. Although to be honest, I found that the picture actually looks really good using the preset “Movie” mode.

Should you buy this Viotek gaming monitor?

viotek 24 inch monitor portrait
Image: Alex Gatewood / KnowTechie

By now, you probably know that this 24-inch monitor from Viotek isn’t quite top of the line. The majority of gamers looking for the best possible picture quality for today’s PC games are likely looking for 4K or at least 1440P resolution.

And for those looking for more of a competitive edge in multiplayer games at 1080P, they’ll probably be looking to get that response time down to 1ms.

But what you are getting with the Viotek GFI24CBA is a versatile 1080P monitor for a great price. Its adjustable stand makes it a perfect fit for just about anywhere on your desk. You can get a 1080P monitor with an adjustable stand from the bigger brands, like LG, but they’re going to cost you closer to $200.

Where the Viotek GFI24CBA really wins is what you get for the affordable price. It sits on the lower end of the price of 144Hz 1080P monitors at $169.99. The color and picture quality are great for 1080P and the adjustable stand is a huge winner in my book.

I would definitely recommend the Viotek GFI24CBA to those looking for an affordable 1080P monitor. I was pleasantly surprised by the monitor, and think it makes a great option for the gamers out there.

You can get one for yourself from Amazon for $169.99 or from the company’s website for the same price.

The post How to build a home office that doubles as a gaming setup appeared first on KnowTechie.

]]>
Over half of Americans who can work remotely are still doing so even two years after the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic. Clearly, working from home is here to stay.

But you don’t have to sacrifice your dream gaming setup to make space for your home office.

If you’re making the switch to a home office, this guide will help you fit gaming and working into one great office space.

Choose the right furniture

The first thing you’ll need for a great gaming-slash-WFH setup is the right furniture. As a general rule, a bigger desk will be better for a multipurpose setup.

After all, you will need room for your gaming PC, which should never go on the floor since it will get clogged with dust down there.

So, opt for a sturdy desk with plenty of surface space. A monitor stand is nice to have, too.

Image: Kevin Raposo / KnowTechie

When you’re working from home, your desk chair will either be your best friend or your worst enemy. If you’re going to splurge on any one piece of furniture, make it your chair.

If you do want a racer-style gaming chair, check the reviews to make sure it has good support for your back and shoulders. A cool color scheme alone will not help your posture. So, do your research and invest in the best chair you can afford.

Upgrade your gear

If you’re a gamer, you probably already have some gear you like to use, whether that’s a keyboard or a perfectly weighted mouse.

You might want to make some upgrades for your new home office gaming space, though — particularly keeping these considerations in mind:

  • Keyboard: For starters, if you don’t already have a mechanical keyboard, this is the perfect opportunity to pick one up. Building your own is fun, though there are plenty of prebuilt mechanical keyboards with ergonomic designs out there that will work great, too. A mechanical keyboard can be more satisfying to type on while you’re working — plus, it will be more fun for gaming when you’re not on the job.

  • Hand and wrist protection: Ergonomic keys and wrist pads are a nice bonus since you’ll be more comfortable typing for long periods and gaming afterward.
  • Monitors: If you don’t already have one, opt for a large monitor with adjustable height and tilt. Working from a laptop gets the job done, but it’s not good for your eyes or your posture. Even if a laptop is still your primary gaming and working device, you’ll be doing yourself a favor by investing in an external monitor. You’ll have more screen space and it will be more comfortable to work and game on.
steelseries aerox 5 wireless mouse right
Image: Alex Gatewood / KnowTechie
  • Mouse: While your ultra-light or custom-weighted gaming mouse might be great for playing your favorite MMO, it might not be the best pick for working. A more ergonomic gaming mouse will be more comfortable to use in slower but longer-duration tasks in your home office.
  • Headset: When you’re shopping around for a headset that works well whether you’re on Zoom or Discord, be sure to choose one you can wear for hours on end. Over-ear headphones with an attached microphone are your best bet, especially if they are lightweight with a comfortable strap.

Bonuses that are nice to have for both gaming and working include an extra-large mousepad or desk pad, a gaming or streaming microphone, and a lighting setup.

A strip of RGB lights stuck along the back edge of your desk makes an awesome ambient lighting source that’s great for working and gaming, especially in darker rooms.

Consider the software

Finally, one of the most important parts of a dual-purpose home office and gaming setup is the software on your computer.

Expert research has shown that remote work greatly increases cybersecurity risks that you wouldn’t run into working in the office, mostly because you’re doing everything from a computer.

Some 43% of WFH employees make mistakes resulting in cybersecurity repercussions — which is particularly easy to do if the computer you use to store sensitive work information is also the one you use in your free time.

Image: KnowTechie

Of course, working from home can make you more productive, but you do need to make sure you have good antivirus and antimalware software installed.

If your employer doesn’t have specific communication and video conferencing software you need to use, make sure you stick to secure, reliable programs.

Discord is a great way to go since it has video and voice calling plus texting. And since it’s also hugely popular in the gaming world, you can have your multiplayer group chat and your office update threads all in one place.

Build the perfect gaming and working hub

Building a home office that doubles as a gaming setup is all about choosing gear and furniture that’s great for both work and play.

Gear built for gaming, like high-quality keyboards and headsets, will give you a more comfortable working environment. When it’s time for a break from work, your setup will be ready for a round of your favorite game.

With all the current discourse around the metaverse, you might be thinking about picking up a VR headset.

Everyone seems to be having fun playing games like Half-Life: Alyx and Beat Saber, but you need to know about PC requirements for VR headsets before diving in.

While some VR headsets like Meta’s Quest 2 can work without any other device, most headsets need a PC.

That means you’ll want to know what minimum specifications you’ll need, and if your computer will need an upgrade before it can run your VR headset.

Surprisingly, VR requirements are not as high as you think, so keep reading below to learn everything you need to know about getting your PC ready for VR.

Your PC needs these as a minimum for using a VR headset

Every headset on the market needs slightly different requirements to work with your PC. Here are the minimums for the four most popular VR headsets.

READ MORE: Does the Meta Quest 2 require a PC?

Remember, these are the bare minimum requirements for them to work, and the more power you can throw at them, the better your experience will be.

That’s nowhere near the number of headsets on the VR market today, but it’s a good start.

Most headsets will require the same level of graphics card or higher, the rest of the specifications might change.

See if you can find the FAQ page from the manufacturer if it’s a headset that’s not on this list, like this one for the Vive Cosmos.

Additionally, Nvidia recommends an RTX3060 or higher for the best VR experience.

AMD has higher requirements than all of the VR headset minimums above, saying you should be using a Radeon R590 or higher.

How to check that your computer meets VR requirements

windows 10 and internet explorer
Image: Windows

Windows makes it a snap to find the few pieces of hardware information you need to know, but the most important thing to check? Your graphics card, which is the most vital part.

That is the most important because most PCs have over 8GB of RAM these days. Almost any PC from the last few years has at least a dual-core CPU. And the minimum CPU requirements of an Intel i5-4590 or Ryzen 1500 are from eight years ago and five years ago, respectively.

How to check your graphics card

  1. Open the Windows Start Menu and select Settings

  1. Click on System from the left pane

  1. Then click on Display > Advanced display

You’ll see the above screen, which will have your monitor’s name and the name of the graphics card that it’s connected to. In my PC, it’s connected to an NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3070, which is above Nvidia’s recommended spec for a smooth VR experience.

windows about menu
Image: KnowTechie

If you go back to the main System page, then click on the bottom entry, About, you’ll see your CPU and RAM specifications.

What about automated tests?

You might have seen VRMark or SteamVR Performance Test mentioned as an easy test for VR compatibility. While it’s true these programs were designed for this, they were created in 2016. VR has moved on substantially since their release.

You can’t count on the rating either program gives as an indicator if your PC can run newer VR headsets. It’s just not going to be accurate when they were designed to say if the original HTC Vive or Oculus Rift headsets were compatible.

Now you know how to check your PC for the minimum specs for any VR headset you might want to buy. Happy gaming!

Macs are spanking the PC market right now https://knowtechie.com/macs-are-spanking-the-pc-market-right-now/ Fri, 29 Apr 2022 18:16:11 +0000 https://knowtechie.com/?p=198707 Mac sales are surging thanks to the M1 chip.

The PC market is in a downturn, but that’s not stopping Apple’s Mac sales. Sales are up eight percent year-over-year, showing the power of Apple’s own M1 processors and robust supply chain.

This data comes from Counterpoint Research, which shows that while the global PC market is down 4.3-percent, Apple’s own sales are increasing.

The reasons given for the slowdown include global inflation, regional conflict (with Russia invading Ukraine), and lockdowns due to COVID-19 in manufacturing areas.

Apple’s positioning of the Mac as a premium device has done wonders for its bottom line. So has bringing chip development in-house, with the well-received M1 chip range. Revenue due to the Mac lines increased 15-percent year-over-year, outpacing sales.

Apple’s Mac range still only commands 7.1-percent of global computer sales, with Lenovo (18.2-percent), HP (15.9-percent), and Dell (13.8-percent) all leading the category. Apple is catching up though, as component shortages and the boost from work-from-home start to wane.

That’s the current picture, but what about the future? Well, lockdowns in China over COVID-19 outbreaks have so far been limited to cities making Apple’s other devices. At this point, it’s too early to say if Apple Mac production will be similarly affected.

Yea, I know, all laptops are foldable, but HP is working on another kind of folding laptop that features a 17-inch foldable OLED display. Well, at least according to this South Korean publication, The Elec.

According to reports, HP’s foldable laptop will feature a 4K flexible display that unfolds from an 11-inch to a 17-inch device.

The company may be planning this device as a limited release for creatives since it reportedly includes a touchscreen and can be used with a stylus.

NotebookCheck reports that the device has a launch window for later this year. Details are still pretty slim, but the publication notes that LG and SK IE Technology will be working with HP to get these laptops out the door, providing all the necessary materials for the display.

HP isn’t the first company to jump into foldable laptops. All the major players in the laptop space have announced plans for their own foldable devices. Lenovo has one, Apple is apparently working on one, and Asus and Samsung already have theirs out in the wild.

The foldable market is something to keep an eye on, and with more and more companies looking to get their foot in the door, we can expect to see more news like this in the coming years.

As I mentioned, the DriverGenius HB081 supports transfer speeds of up to 5Gbps. Therefore, you can transfer large files in a fraction of the time it would take with a traditional USB 2.0 card reader.

The super-fast transfer speed may particularly come in handy when transferring high-resolution photos and videos. Additionally, if you frequently transfer large files, the DriverGenius HB081 will save you a lot of time in the long run.

It Is Compact and Portable

Caveat: Although the DriverGenious HB081 comes with a sturdy metal enclosure, you should still be careful when handling the card reader. Like all electronic devices, it is susceptible to physical damage. Poor handling could potentially damage the card reader’s USB port and affect its performance.

This policy gives you plenty of time to test out the card reader and make sure it meets your needs. Besides, it’s always nice to have the option to return a product if it doesn’t work out.

Caveat: The 30-day return policy does not apply if you damage the DriverGenius HB081. So, be sure to handle the card reader with care.

Zoom now works with Twitch, which means users can now livestream from Zoom’s desktop client directly to Twitch. Before this integration, users had to utilize third-party apps as a workaround, and in most cases, the process was a bit complicated.

The only obvious kicker to this news is that Zoom typically charges a fee to livestream its meetings to other platforms. And this new Twitch integration is no different.

To utilize this Zoom’s Twitch integration, users have to subscribe to the company’s Pro, Business, Enterprise, or Education plans. The cheapest option is the Pro tier, which costs $149.90 per year.

“To help our customers streamline the process of sharing content within their communities and extend their reach, account owners and admins can now allow hosts to livestream their meeting or webinar to Twitch directly rather than manually configuring the stream as a custom livestreaming service,” said Zoom in a recent blog post.

The company announced its new partnership earlier this week, along with a few other Zoom updates that include meeting avatars, video messages in chats, and more. You can learn more about all the updates here.

If I had to buy my less tech-inclined parents a new computer, the Acer Aspire C27 would probably be my first choice.

Sure, an iMac would be a great option, but pricing is obviously a factor that buyers can’t ignore. And naturally, simplicity plays a part, as well. The Acer Aspire C27 checks off all the right boxes, but is it a good enough all-in-one solution for most people? Well, that depends.

Folks who don’t require all the bells and whistles should opt for an all-in-one PC. For example, if you don’t need things like beefy graphic cards, liquid-cooled GPUs, and crystal clear displays for gaming, an all-in-one can handle the rest.

The Acer Aspire C27 is a perfect example of a solid all-in-one PC. Clocking in at $1,299, the Aspire C27 has all the features you’ll need to get through all your daily tasks in a compact, sleek design that’s aimed to fit anywhere you need it.

And with its 27-inch Full HD IPS display, the Aspire C27 is ideal for most buyers, specifically, those who need a simple PC for answering emails, shopping online, streaming content, and other things like keeping up with appointments and reminders.

But on the flip side, the Aspire C27 isn’t something you would use for resource-hungry tasks like gaming or video editing. But when it comes to basic things like browsing the internet and checking emails – the Aspire C27 is a solid machine that handles all these things like a champ.

Before we dive any further, here’s a quick rundown of the PC’s build and specifications:

  • Processor: 11th Gen Intel Core i7-1165G7
  • Graphics Card: Nvidia GeForce MX330
  • Operating System: Windows 11 Pro
  • Hard Drive: 1TB and a 512GB NVMe M.2 SSD
  • Processor Core: Quad-core (4 Core)
  • RAM: 16GB DDR4 266MHz
  • Display: 27-inch Full HD IPS
  • Display Type: LED
  • Screen Resolution: 1920 x 1080
  • Weight: 9 Pounds
  • Operating System: Windows 11

Setting up the Aspire C27 took me less than five minutes

If you have experience plugging in a toaster, then you’ll have no problems getting this PC up and running.

Since this is an all-in-one solution, there’s no bulky tower or other external parts that need assembling – just one monitor, keyboard, and mouse. That’s it. Just plug in the monitor to a power source and give it an ole power cycle and you should be up and running in no time.

And that’s it. The only other setup required is creating a new user profile in Windows 11. Also, it’s probably worth noting that you’ll have to add batteries to the included keyboard and mouse, but that’s all there is to set this PC up.

It’s important to mention that the Aspire C27 features a 512GB NVMe M.2 solid-state hard drive, which means a few things: games, apps, and movies load ridiculously fast.

But more importantly, in the C27’s case, the PC can boot to the homescreen a whole lot quicker than one without an SSD drive. In other words, I was able to test the C27 immediately after turning it on for the first time.

The Aspire C27’s design let you take it anywhere

Image: Kevin Raposo / KnowTechie

Before moving onto the performance side of things, let’s focus on the C27’s design. Typically when you picture a PC, the last thing you think about is how portable they are. And in most cases, they aren’t.

However, the Aspire C27 breaks the mold. Weighing only 9 pounds, moving this PC around is pretty painless and doesn’t require much effort.

Also, due to the lack of a tower, it’s simply a matter of unplugging the machine and moving it to your desired location. Just don’t forget the wireless mouse and keyboard.

And regardless of how much space you’re working with, the Aspire C27 can fit just about anywhere. When testing, it shared the same deskspace my wife works from. Imagine a journalist’s desk in a newsroom in the 1960s, and you’ll get an idea of how her desk looks.

Ports for days

Image: Kevin Raposo / KnowTechie

As someone who works from a MacBook Pro daily, ports are a precious resource, and generally, Apple is pretty stingy when it comes to offering a healthy number of ports on its laptops.

Since the Aspire C27 is an all-in-one PC, you may be asking what the port situation looks like. Honestly, it’s a fair question, and I’m happy to report some good news: You have a wealth of port options on the C27.

The Aspire C27 includes two USB 3.0 ports and two USB 2.0 Type-A ports. You also get an HDMI out port if you plan on using an extra display. However, it’s worth noting that the wireless mouse and keyboard will use one of the USB Type-A ports, so plan accordingly.

The display could be a bit better

acer aspire c27 all-in-one pc on a desk
Image: Kevin Raposo / KnowTechie

To be blunt, this was one area where the C27 failed to impress me. And you know what? That’s understandable. My MacBook’s Liquid Retina XDR display has completely spoiled me, so switching to the IPS display on the Aspire C27 was somewhat of an adjustment.

The Aspire C27 features a 27-inch full HD IPS LED back-lit screen. If you’re aren’t too concerned with how things look on a screen, then you’ll have no complaints. Personally, I didn’t either once I was used to the difference.

But for folks who nitpick every color, you could run into instances of shadow effects on the display’s border, similar to what you find on many laptops. Most people won’t find this to be a deal-breaker, however.

Given my previous track record with PCs, the C27 peformed surprisingly well

the back of an acer aspire all in one pc placed on a desk
Image: Kevin Raposo / KnowTechie

My first impressions were surprisingly good. As mentioned above, my daily driver is a 2021 MacBook Pro with Apple’s latest M1 Max chip, so I was a little worried the Aspire C27 wouldn’t live up to my expectations. However, I’m mainly talking about speed.

To my surprise, the C27 handled itself pretty well. Sure, it’s not as fast as my MacBook, but that doesn’t mean the C27 runs slow either.

I don’t have any benchmarking tools that prove this, but in testing, the difference wasn’t as drastic as I expected. Not to mention, I was using a review unit previously installed with Windows 11, so no unnecessary software or bloatware was slowing down the device.

Websites like Gmail opened up in a snap, but some programs like Spotify, took a little longer to open than I expected. But to be fair, some of those same programs open a bit sluggish on my previously owned MacBooks so it’s pretty standard across the board.

Overall, the Aspire C27 performed pretty well and exceeded my expectations.

If you’re using this for basic computing tasks like email, web browsing, online shopping, or any other productivity-based projects – the Aspire should suit you well. And even other things like light gaming or streaming video shouldn’t bog the machine down either.

The webcam records poor video quality, but that isn’t surprising

acer aspire c27 all-in-one pc
Image: Kevin Raposo / KnowTechie

Many Aspire C27 reviews you’ll find out there strangely focus on its 720-pixel HD webcam. And to be fair, it isn’t all that great. But does it get the job done? Yup, it sure does. Do other PC makers offer better cameras in their all-in-one PCs? Some, sure, but it absolutely isn’t the standard in 2022.

Even Apple just recently transitioned to newer webcams. Until 2021, all of Apple’s laptops came with 720-pixel HD webcams, so it’s not surprising that Acer is incorporating them into their products.

Sure, the C27’s camera quality isn’t the best, but most consumers don’t use that as a deciding factor when purchasing a new PC.

The camera does its job, and it’s certainly not the worst of options out there, but if a good webcam quality is one of those things you adamantly need, then there are always third-party cameras to get around this. So I don’t think it’s that big of a deal.

Final verdict on the Aspire C27

acer aspire PC on desk with keyboard and mouse
Image: Kevin Raposo / KnowTechie

The Aspire C27 is an excellent all-in-one PC; I would have no problem recommending it. It’s fast, lightweight, and can handle all your basic computing needs. As a matter of fact, if my mom ever needed a new PC and asked me for a recommendation – the Aspire C27 would be high on the list of suggestions.

I also appreciate that it doesn’t take up too much space. So whether you need to work from your home office or the kitchen table, you won’t have to worry about unplugging a million cables or accessories to get it there.

Sure, it’s a desktop PC, but it certainly doesn’t feel like one. So if you hate things cluttering your desk, the C27 is something you won’t have to worry about taking up too much space.

During my time with the Aspire C27, I was able to write and edit blog posts without a hitch. I’m one of those people who tend to have a criminally high number of Chrome tabs open and to see that it didn’t stutter shows that this PC can handle intense daily use.

Now, I’m not saying you can hook up your Oculus VR rig to it, but for the average user, this is a worthy all-in-one PC worth checking out.

If the Acer C27 isn’t checking off all the boxes, here are some similar products worth checking out:

The Acer C27 retails at $1,299.99 and is being exclusively sold at Amazon.

It’s really easy to get overwhelmed with subscription services. Especially when companies like Apple make it so easy to subscribe to them. If you are trying to trim your monthly bills and want to cancel Apple subscriptions quickly and easily, this guide will walk you through the steps.

Many iOS services and apps ask you to purchase subscriptions, like Apple Music. Thankfully, Apple makes the process of canceling iPhone, iPad, and Apple TV subscriptions relatively painless.

All you need to know is where to find them. After all, you don’t want to actually get charged after your free trial ends, do you?

The good thing is you can quickly find out all the subscriptions linked to your Apple ID and cancel the ones you don’t want to renew. Here’s everything you need to know about how to cancel Apple subscriptions on Apple devices and more.

So what are Apple subscriptions anyway?

Until very recently, all services subscribed to from an App Store app had to be billed through Apple. That gives you the option to bundle all of your subscription billing into one place, which is convenient.

It might, however, mean you pay a higher price than users elsewhere, as developers often pass the 30% cut that Apple takes onto the consumer.

That’s one good reason to cancel your subscriptions billed through Apple and resubscribe directly with the service. Now that we’ve gotten that out of the way, let’s get started.

How to cancel subscriptions on iPhone

If you want to know how to cancel Apple app subscriptions, then you are in luck. Canceling your Apple subscriptions for services like HBO Max, Apple Music, or Apple Arcade is a short process once you know where to look.

Apple nicely collects all of the subscriptions billed through your Apple ID in one place. We’ll show you where to find it:

  1. Tap on the Settings app from your iPhoneios settings app

  2. Then, tap on your name card at the top of the screenios settings apple id

  3. Tap on Subscriptionsios settings apple id subscriptions

  4. On this screen, you’ll see a list of current subscriptions plus past subscriptions that have expiredsubscription list on iphone

  5. Tapping on any of these subscriptions takes you to the subscription page. Here you can change your subscription type or Cancel Subscriptioncancel a subscription on iphone

  6. Tap on Cancel Free Trial or Cancel Subscription, and then tap again to confirm

If you have an Apple One subscription, you can cancel the whole subscription, or tap Choose Individual Services if you want to keep some parts.

And boom! You now know how to find, and more importantly, cancel, your App Store subscriptions through Apple on your iPhone. The same steps will also work on your iPad.

If you don’t see the Cancel Subscription option, the subscription is already canceled and won’t renew at the end of the billing cycle.

How to cancel your iCloud storage subscription

The only Apple subscription that won’t show up in the section outline above is iCloud+. You can still manage this from your iPhone, and we’ll show you where to find it:

This will stop your paid iCloud+ subscription.

It’s important to note that you’ll lose access to features like Hide My Email and iCloud Private Relay, and you’ll have to figure out where to put your files if you have more than 5GB stored in your iCloud.

How to restart a canceled subscription on your iPhone

Sometimes you might find you want to restart a subscription that you’ve previously canceled. Apple keeps a record of inactive subscriptions in the same menu we used earlier:

  1. Follow steps 1 through 3 from the previous section
  1. If you have any inactive subscriptions, you will see them at the bottom under the Expired category heading (shown below)
  1. Tap on any subscription in this section that you want to restart

This list will only show current subscriptions. If you don’t see anything in the list, it means you don’t have any active subscriptions through Apple.

If you know you still have an active subscription somewhere else, it’s time to go to their own website to cancel. Apple also has some other suggestions if the subscription you want to cancel isn’t shown.
