The post Which Nintendo Switch is best for you? appeared first on KnowTechie.

Quick Answer: The best Nintendo Switch for you depends on your needs. If you want a strictly portable console, get the Switch Lite. If you want one you can use with a TV, the original Switch or Switch OLED is better.

For several years now, Nintendo has been the king of handheld gaming consoles with its Nintendo Switch.

The Switch is a versatile console you can take with you on the go or dock it at your television and game on the big screen.

When the console was originally released in 2017, there was only one real option. Your only choice was the color of the Joy-Cons.

The original Switch stood by itself for a while before the company finally released different console versions.

The Nintendo Switch Lite was introduced a couple of years after the original console was released. Then, two years later, Nintendo came out with the improved Nintendo Switch OLED version.

For those looking to get their hands on a Nintendo Switch console, it can be difficult to decide which one is best for you. Check out the different Nintendo Switch versions below:

Nintendo Switch vs. the OLED Nintendo Switch

The two versions of the console that are the closest are the original Switch and the OLED version, released in 2021.

Both of these versions of the console feature a screen with detachable controllers that can be docked for use with a television.

And now for the differences: The OLED version of the Switch features a few upgrades (as well as an upgraded price).

First, the dock on the OLED switch features an ethernet port, so you can plug in straight to the internet for better download speeds.

But probably the more important difference has to do with the console itself. As the name implies, the OLED version features an upgraded 7″ OLED screen.

Compared to the 6.2″ LCD screen on the original version, the OLED option is a pretty decent upgrade.

The OLED version is also fitted with a larger 64 GB hard drive compared to the 32 GB drive on the original Switch.

While this is definitely an improvement, it’s still not going to be enough to load up a bunch of games.

You’ll likely have to take advantage of the microSD expansion slot (found on all versions of the Nintendo Switch).

The OLED switch retails for $349.99, while the original version still sits at its original price of $299.99.

Difference between Nintendo Switch and Switch Lite

Image: KnowTechie

And, of course, we can’t forget about the Switch Lite. The Lite version of the console was designed as a handheld-only option for gamers that aren’t interested in gaming on their TVs.

The Switch Lite features the smallest screen in the Switch lineup, at just 5.5 inches. It doesn’t come with removable Joy-Con controllers.

If the infamous Joy-Con drift happens to you, you’ll need to send the unit in for repair.

The console is essentially the same as the original Switch, except for these minor differences and the inability to play the console on your TV.

The Nintendo Switch Lite retails for just $199.99, so it is, by far, the most affordable in the Switch lineup. However, it also features the least amount of versatility, so that’s something that you’ll definitely want to consider.

So which Nintendo Switch is best for you?

Short answer: It depends on how you plan to use the console

Looking at the specifications, the biggest difference in Switch consoles lies between the Lite and the other two versions.

If you are looking for a console to use strictly for handheld gaming, then the Nintendo Switch Lite is perfect.

nintendo switch lite size comparison
Image: Nintendo

You won’t be able to use it on your TV, but you’ll be able to save a good amount of money by snagging the Lite.

As for the other two options, it really comes down to preference. I don’t think there’s enough of an upgrade between the original Switch and the OLED version to justify the $50.

But, if you want that bigger, better screen with a little more storage and the option to hardwire your internet when docked, then the Switch OLED version is the one you will want.

The post Gifting a console? What you should know before wrapping it up appeared first on KnowTechie.

]]>
This year, gaming consoles are the year’s hottest gaming gifts. To make the experience extra special, some prep work is involved before you wrap up new consoles, games, or peripherals.

Whether that’s the PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, or the Switch OLED – any gamer on your list will be thrilled to receive one of these game consoles this year.

Keep in mind server issues or slow internet could take the holiday cheer out of your gift. Setting up the console beforehand will reduce the time getting that new console up and running.

We’ll show you what you need to know and what preparation you can take to ensure the gamer on your list is ready to play on unwrapping day.

Do these things before you gift a new console

Modern consoles are closer to PCs than ever before. You can’t just take them out of the box and start playing immediately.

First, you’ll need to update them to the latest operating system. But it doesn’t stop there.

There are system and controller firmware updates. And if any games come with the console – install and update those too.

💡 It’s important to start this process early, especially if you only have time to work on it during the hours when your children (or adults) are sleeping.

Console updates can take a while and might even take overnight to complete, depending on your internet speed. And that’s without factoring in the time to download and patch any games.

If you plan on doing this right, you have your work cut out for you.

Pick the right console for the right person

xbox playstation and nintendo consoles
Image: KnowTechie

One thing you need to do before you even purchase a console is to make sure you’re getting the right one. The last thing you want is to give them the wrong console.

A few factors make picking the right console important. Most gamers have a preferred console of choice that they’re looking for.

Additionally, you want to make sure you get the right generation. The latest consoles available from the three major manufacturers are the PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and the Nintendo Switch.

If you’re looking to gift a PlayStation 5, there are two options to choose from. The standard PlayStation 5 lets you play both physical and digital games.

But there’s also a PlayStation 5 Digital Edition with no disc drive that costs a little less.

The Xbox Series X|S is essentially the same. An Xbox Series X has a disc drive, and an Xbox Series S does not. The Series X also has slightly improved specs but costs more than the Series S.

The Nintendo Switch has three options to choose from. The middle-of-the-road Nintendo Switch is the classic, handheld plus docked Nintendo experience.

If you only want the handheld version, you can save some money and get the cheaper Nintendo Switch Lite.

Finally, there’s the Nintendo Switch OLED Model. This version offers an improved screen, more storage, and various other improvements over the original model. But, of course, it’ll cost you a little extra.

Update the console

downloading updates on consoles
Image: Kevin Raposo / KnowTechie

Nobody wants to spend Christmas Day staring at a console’s update screen.

To prepare for this, you’ll need to plan ahead. This is especially important if your internet is frequently congested with streaming video and other tasks.

How to set up a new console

xbox series x and playstation 5 on purple background
Image: KnowTechie

Like any other electronics, you want to be careful when you set up a new console for the first time. The process is relatively easy and straightforward if you follow the steps below.

Step 1: Open the console box carefully. Make sure not to rip anything, and carefully cut the security sticker with a sharp knife.

Leave the two halves on. The last thing you want to do is accidentally peel off some of the box when peeling the sticker. You can even replace it with a new security sticker when you’re done.

Step 2: Plug in the console and follow all instructions to update to the latest operating system. We recommend using an Ethernet cable for this step, as it enables the fastest download speeds.

You can also use this time to enter any WiFi details if you know them. That’ll save time when your recipient unwraps their console.

Once you’re finished updating the console and installing any games, you can repackage the console.

If you want to go a step further, get a replacement security seal sticker from Amazon. That way, you can replace the sticker you cut earlier and give your loved one the full unboxing experience.

How to update a new console

playstation nintendo xbox console wars
Image: KnowTechie

You might already own the console you’re gifting, which means you know how to update them. For everyone else, here are instructions from all three major manufacturers on how to update:

Creating a temporary login is probably best, and you can delete it afterward. It takes an hour or more to update a console.

You’ll also feel pretty good that you did it early before the millions of other people updating their consoles for the first time as that can sometimes cause issues.

You don’t need to create a temporary log-in if you’re gifting a PlayStation 5 or Xbox Series X|S.

Instead, the console will ask you to update the firmware before it asks you to sign in. But you will need one to update a Nintendo Switch.

Also, make sure to charge the controllers. The PlayStation’s DualShock 4 uses a micro-USB to charge. The DualSense controllers for PlayStation 5 use USB-C.

Xbox One or Xbox Series X|S controllers need AA batteries unless you buy the Charge n Play accessory, and Switch controllers charge wirelessly when they’re attached to the main console.

Wrapping a new console

If you want to know how to wrap an Xbox (or any other console), the best way to do this is in the box. Otherwise, the wrapping job is probably going to look pretty awkward.

You can use traditional methods when wrapping a console or any physical game. If you need a refresher, the video above offers a great explanation on how to wrap a box.

What to do with games for a new console

five games to check out in july 2020
Image: KnowTechie

If the console came with digital downloads, you’ll need the recipient’s account details to download them. You wouldn’t want to attach the games to another account.

You might not feel comfortable asking, or if this is their first console from that manufacturer, it’s better to leave this unclaimed so they can install them once they decide on a username.

We recommend you buy any games as disc versions, so they can return them if it’s not a game they’ll play. Read the vendor’s return policy fully. Here are the policies for Amazon, Best Buy, and Target.

We like giving gift cards for the console instead of digital download keys. That way, they can pick the titles they want to play.

Make sure you give more than the cost of one game for the latest consoles. That’s $70, to be on the safe side.

If you bought a bundle with Blu-ray-based games, you could install those ahead of time so they can play something while the digital ones download.

Stick them in the drive, let it transfer data onto the hard drive, and start any updates for the game over the internet. That could take hours, so leave the console plugged in and connected to the internet.

How to install physical games on a console

ps5 game install

Now you can think about installing any physical games that you got to join the console gift. Depending on which console you’re gifting, that process might differ slightly.

Nintendo Switch

nintendo switch oled model and stand
Image: KnowTechie

Physical games for the Nintendo Switch come as small cartridges. They should work right out of the box. You can even play many of them while any updates are downloaded.

You can safely leave them in the shrink-wrapped box, so your recipient gets all the joy of tearing them open. It won’t take long for them to get into the game once they pop the cartridge in the console.

Remove that shrink wrap carefully if you want to go the extra mile. Lift the two tabs on one short side and slide the shrink wrap off.

Then do the same on the other side once you’re done. You can even reseal it with a dab of glue.

Connect the Switch to the internet, then place the cartridge into the console. Follow the instructions that will pop up for updating and installing.

Then pop the cartridge out and back into the box once it’s finished updating.

PlayStation

Image: Unsplash

Many games for the PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5 can be played without an update. But some will require an update first.

As a responsible gift giver, it’s worth preinstalling and checking for updates. Important bug fixes or added content could be part of those updates.

You can update games without having to sign into a PSN account. Carefully remove the shrink wrap, so you can reuse it to seal the box again when you’re done. Insert the disc into the drive and follow the prompts.

Once the installation is done, run the game once. That lets it connect to the internet to download any updates. Eject the disc, put it carefully back in the box, and put the shrink wrap back on.

Xbox

xbox series s and series s on white background
Image: Microsoft

Unlike PS games, most Xbox One and Xbox Series X games need to be installed on the internal hard drive. Most of the time, they also need an update before they load.

First, you need to sign in with an Xbox account. Create one just for this process, then sign in. Open the shrink wrap carefully, and slide the disc into the slot. Install it as prompted, then get ready to update everything.

Press the Xbox Guide button on the controller, then select My Games and Apps > See all. On the next screen, scroll down to Manage > Updates and update every game you see in the list.

Wait for them to finish updating, then you can remove the temporary account you created earlier.

That will load all the games and content onto the Xbox but make it so your recipient can sign into their own Xbox account when they unwrap their present.

Throw in an extra controller (or two)

xbox nintendo and playstation controllers
Image: KnowTechie

Another good idea to consider is throwing in an extra controller or two. That way, the person you’re gifting doesn’t have to play alone.

Of course, if you’re gifting this console to someone who only plays alone or online, they might not need an extra controller.

But it’s nice to have more than one when there’s going to be more than one person gaming on the console.

The Nintendo Switch comes with detachable controllers that can be split up and used by two people. However, you can snag an extra pair of JoyCons for party gaming with up to four people on one console.

PlayStation and Xbox consoles typically come with one controller unless you get a special bundle that states otherwise. That makes them a great candidate for snagging an extra controller to add to the gift.

For the PlayStation 5, the latest controller available is the DualSense Wireless controller starting at $69. Microsoft also improved its controller for the Xbox Series X|S, available starting at $49.

Wrapping it all up

So, there you have it. That’s all you should do if you plan to gift a console or game this holiday season.

It’s important to remember; today’s consoles are closer to PCs than ever. You can’t just take them out of the box and immediately start playing.

Doing all this legwork will ensure whoever you’re gifting a console lets them play right on day one.

Nintendo’s throwback controllers now work with Apple devices https://knowtechie.com/nintendos-throwback-controllers-now-work-with-apple-devices/ Wed, 26 Oct 2022 14:48:19 +0000 https://knowtechie.com/?p=251619 Nintendo's controllers can be used for much more than just the Switch.

Apple’s latest operating system updates unlock the ability to use Nintendo’s throwback classic controllers with Apple devices.

The new feature was initially discovered by developer Steve Troughton-Smith. MacStories later confirmed the news.

Together, they discovered that the modern N64 and SNES controllers work with macOS 13, iOS 16, and tvOS 16. Neither was able to confirm whether or not the Sega Genesis and NES controllers work.

https://twitter.com/stroughtonsmith/status/1584684763042189312

Apple’s release notes for iPadOS 16 and macOS Ventura say that “many additional Bluetooth and USB game controllers are supported by the Game Controller framework on macOS 13, iOS 16, and tvOS 16 and later.”

Thanks to that wording, we assume that all of Nintendo’s modern throwback controllers will now work with Apple products.

These updates add brand new uses for Nintendo’s lineup of retro controllers. The controllers were originally only usable on the Nintendo Switch with the Nintendo Switch Online service.

But now, they have become much more versatile. In addition to their new functionality on Apple devices, the controllers are also available for use on Steam, the popular PC gaming platform.

So if you’re a big fan of Nintendo’s old-school controllers but don’t game on a Switch, these updates are for you.

Now you can play your favorite games on your iPhone, iPad, and more using Nintendo’s Bluetooth retro controllers.

Super Punch-Out!! 2-player mode discovered after 28 years https://knowtechie.com/super-punch-out-2-player-mode-discovered-after-28-years/ Wed, 10 Aug 2022 13:25:40 +0000 https://knowtechie.com/?p=227506 The 2-play mode is available on SNES, Nintendo Switch Online, and more.

The post Super Punch-Out!! 2-player mode discovered after 28 years appeared first on KnowTechie.

]]>
It has been almost 30 years since the Punch-out!! series made its way to the Super Nintendo in Super Punch-Out!!. By now, we’d imagine that all of the game’s secrets were discovered long ago. But that’s not quite the case.

A recent discovery from Twitter account new_cheats_news has revealed a two-player mode hidden deep within the code for 28 years.

The new_cheats_news account is dedicated to discovering previously unknown modes, menus, and features in classic games.

This is one of the account’s biggest discoveries. Interestingly, a simple button command unlocks two-player mode in Super Punch-Out!!, but it took 28 years to find.

On top of that, the 2-player mode can be accessed in the original version for SNES, on the Super Nintendo Classic Edition, and even within Switch Online.

How to access 2-player mode in Super Punch-Out!!

So how exactly do you access this newly discovered feature? As I said earlier, the process is pretty simple, but it was obscure enough to remain hidden for decades.

You have to start by plugging in a second controller to your Super Nintendo. Then, hold down the Y & R buttons on that controller while the first player presses Start on the initial menu.

This will bring up an entirely new menu where you can choose which of the game’s bosses you want to take on.

This time, hold B & Y on the second controller while choosing the character with A or Start on the first controller. And that will allow the second player to control the boss on the other side of the ring.

It wasn’t uncommon for game developers to add special menus or cheat modes like this one in Super Punch-Out!! to their games back in the Super Nintendo era.

However, it was certainly uncommon for those modes to remain hidden for nearly 30 decades before someone found them. This is a super cool find from new_cheats_news, and I look forward to the next discovery.

How to turn on dark mode on Nintendo Switch https://knowtechie.com/how-to-turn-on-dark-mode-nintendo-switch/ Wed, 10 Aug 2022 12:25:00 +0000 https://knowtechie.com/?p=158227 Dark mode can really save your eyes from a lot of strain.

The post How to turn on dark mode on Nintendo Switch appeared first on KnowTechie.

If you’re tired of the Nintendo Switch’s bright interface, dark mode may be the solution. Most devices offer this feature. However, it goes by different names, including night mode, and, in the case of the Switch, Basic Black.

Dark mode is an alleged miracle cure for several common problems. For instance, using a darker theme in low light may reduce eye strain.

Dark mode may also lower blue light exposure, helping to keep your circadian rhythm in tune. Additionally, using a dark-themed interface can help conserve your device’s battery life, as a darker screen uses less power.

How to turn on the Nintendo Switch’s dark mode

The Nintendo Switch, by design, doesn’t have a feature that it explicitly calls ‘dark mode.’

Instead, you are able to change the overall user interface of the console from a white background to a black background, which accomplishes the same thing.

 1. Select System Settings from the console’s home screennintendo switch home screen

 2. Scroll down and select Themes, then Basic Blackbasic black theme nintendo switch

And there you have it. While this isn’t technically called dark mode, changing to the Basic Black theme will change your Nintendo Switch’s background from white to black.

The Switch’s Basic Black theme has one serious side effect

After switching to dark mode, you may notice that your Nintendo Switch’s UI looks much better than before. This is a known side effect of enabling darker themes on electronic devices.

It’s nothing to be concerned about, so sit back and embrace the change. You know what they say about going black and never going back, right?

If, however, dark mode is too slick for you to handle, you can switch back to the standard theme and enjoy your white-bread life.

The post How to add friends on your Nintendo Switch appeared first on KnowTechie.

]]>
Nintendo is notorious for making online capabilities on its console a bit of a hassle. Even adding friends on the Nintendo Switch with friend codes can be a bit of a hassle. Fortunately, Nintendo has made it a bit easier over the years.

But if you’re new to the console, it can be somewhat overwhelming. Unlike PlayStation or Xbox, Nintendo’s online systems can seem pretty archaic to some.

Adding friends on Nintendo Switch isn’t as straightforward as on other consoles. It involves sharing convoluted friend codes that you then have to enter to initiate the request in the first place.

But follow along, and we’ll try to make the process a bit simpler for you.

How to find your Nintendo Switch friend code

nintendo switch friend code

Nintendo doesn’t give users unique gamertags when they create an account. Instead, the platform assigns everyone a unique friend code that they share to add new friends.

READ MORE: How to turn on dark mode on Nintendo Switch

As you can imagine, it’s not the most intuitive design that exists. It’s tough to try and remember your own unique code to share with your friends. And that’s not to mention the hassle of typing in the codes using the Switch’s controller or touchscreen.

But that’s how Nintendo has set it up. So first, we’re going to look at how to find and share your friend code on the Nintendo Switch so you can start adding friends.

Start by loading up your console and logging into your account. Then, follow along with the steps outlined below:

 1. Tap your profile picture in the top leftnintendo switch profile picture

 2. Navigate to the Profile tabnintendo switch profile tab

 3. Find your Friend Code on the rightnintendo switch friend code

And that’s where you can find your friend code. This is the code that you will give to your friends so they can send you a friend request. So now, we’ll look at how to do that.

How to send a Nintendo Switch friend request using a friend code

So now we’ll go over how to actually add a friend on your Nintendo Switch or Nintendo Switch Lite. On your Nintendo Switch itself, you have a few different options. We’ll start by looking at friend codes.

 1. Tap your profile picture in the top right

 1. Scroll down to the Add Friend tab on the right

 1. Select Search with Friend Code

 1. Enter the friend code and select OK

Once you’ve done that, the person whose friend code you enter will receive a notification the next time they log in. Then, they can navigate to the same Add Friend menu to accept it.

Alternatively, you can use the Search for Local Users feature to add friends. If you and your friend both have your Nintendo Switch in the same location, you can use this option to quickly add friends.

The final option that you have on the Switch console itself is adding friends that you’ve recently played with online.

Choose the Search for Users You Played With option to bring up a list of users that you have played online matches with. From there, you can send them a quick friend request to not have to bother with friend codes.

Use your phone to add friends on Nintendo Switch

As you can see, adding friends on your Nintendo Switch isn’t the easiest thing in the world. Unless you’re right next to your friends who also have their console or you’re looking for someone you’ve already played with, you have to work with those annoying friend codes.

However, Nintendo at least recognizes that this method isn’t easy or intuitive for most gamers. The company has actually added a couple of additional ways to add friends using the Nintendo Switch Online mobile app.

You’ll have to start by downloading the Nintendo Switch Online app for your iOS or Android device. Then, follow the steps to link your Switch account to the app account.

Once you finish that, you’ll have a few other options for adding new friends on your Nintendo Switch.

How to use the Nintendo Switch Online app to copy your friend code

One of the initial features of the Nintendo Switch Online app is the ability to copy your friend code to your phone’s clipboard. Then, you can just paste it on your device and send it to anyone you want to add as a friend. Here’s how that works:

 1. Open the Nintendo Switch Online app and tap your profile picture in the top right
nintendo switch online app profile picture
Image: KnowTechie
 1. Tap the copy symbol next to your friend code

Once you do that, you can then go and paste your friend code anywhere and share it with your friends. They can also use the app to enter the code by tapping on the Friend Requests section from the same menu.

Image: KnowTechie

That’s already an easier method than having to manually remember or shout out your friend code so that someone can send you a friend request.

But Nintendo recently went a step further, adding the ability to add friends using a URL or QR code.

Add friends using a URL

To help make things even easier, you can copy your friend code as a URL. Then, when you share it with your friends, it will automatically open the app with your friend code entered so they can send you a request. It’s found in the same section of the app:

 1. Open the Nintendo Switch Online app and tap your profile picture in the top right
switch online app profile picture

 1. Tap the three-dot menu next to your friend code
switch online app three dot menu
Image: KnowTechie
 1. Select Copy as URL
switch online app copy as url
Image: KnowTechie

The app will then create a custom URL and save it to your clipboard. You can then share that URL with friends, and when they open it, they will be given a prompt to send you a friend request.

Do keep in mind that anyone with your custom URL will be able to send you a friend request on your Nintendo Switch.

Add Nintendo Switch friends using a QR code

Maybe the most convenient option that Nintendo has added to the app is the ability to save your friend code as a QR code.

Then, you can always have it handy in your phone’s photo gallery to share whenever you want. Check this out:

 1. Open the Nintendo Switch Online app and tap your profile picture in the top right
switch online app profile picture

 1. Tap the three-dot menu next to your friend code
switch online app three dot menu
Image: KnowTechie
 1. Select Save as QR Code
nintendo switch online app save as qr code
Image: KnowTechie

With this method, the app will create a unique QR code for you and save it on your device. Then, whoever scans the code will be automatically prompted to send you a friend request.

But remember, like the URL option, anyone with the QR code will be able to send you friend requests.

Nintendo’s complex friend request process is made easier by the mobile app

While it’s completely possible to add friends on Nintendo Switch from the console itself, it’s not the most straightforward process there is. You have to deal with 12-digit friend codes that can be hard to remember.

You can add friends who are in close proximity a little easier. And if you use the Search for Users You Played With option, the process isn’t that bad either.

But the easiest way to add friends on the Nintendo Switch is through the Nintendo Switch Online mobile app. There, you can easily copy your entire friend.

Or you can go a step further to copy your code as a URL or a QR code that will automatically prompt other users to send you a friend request.

However you plan to add friends, this article should help you on your journey. Don’t you just love Nintendo’s overly complicated processes?

Earlier this week, Nintendo released its earnings report for the first quarter of its fiscal year, covering April, May, and June. As part of its reports, the company updated its top 10 selling games list for the Nintendo Switch.

In its report (PDF), Nintendo noted some subpar earnings, following the same trend other video game manufacturers have experienced this year.

When it comes to Nintendo, hardware sales are down around 23 percent, and software is down another 8.6 percent.

The company also updated its top 10 best-selling games on the Nintendo Switch. Check the full list below to see which games are most popular on the Nintendo Switch.

After a quick glance at the Nintendo Switch top 10 list, there aren’t really any major surprises. Mario Kart 8 is the best-selling Switch game ever by a pretty substantial margin.

Additionally, Animal Crossing: New Horizons comes in second, with almost 40 million units sold.

And of course, both Pokémon and Super Mario are incredibly popular on the Nintendo Switch, with each holding three different spots in the top 10.

The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild comes in at number four, and I’d expect its sequel will end up being just as popular.

While it has been a slow year for the video game industry so far, things aren’t looking so bad over at Nintendo. The company has several game beloved game franchises that are still selling pretty well.

And considering it’s dealing with an almost six-year-old console, the company likely isn’t too upset by falling hardware sales.

The best Nintendo Switch accessories (2022) https://knowtechie.com/the-best-nintendo-switch-accessories-you-can-buy-2021-edition/ Wed, 03 Aug 2022 12:00:00 +0000 https://knowtechie.com/?p=124908 There’s a lot here, we know, but these accessories will certainly add another level of entertainment to the Nintendo Switch.

So you’ve managed to beat the hordes to pick up a Nintendo Switch console at a price. Maybe you got the new OLED model, the Switch Lite, or the OG. Now, how about the best Nintendo Switch accessories?

Before you jump in with your friends and play gaming gems like Breath of the Wild and Mario Odyssey, you’ll want to pick up additional accessories to make your gaming time more enjoyable.

Let’s face it, while the Nintendo Switch is pretty great, there is a bunch of quality-of-life improvements that can be made.

For example, replacing the original dock with a more portable version, blinging your console up with a glittery case, or adding a carrying bag for your portable but oh-so-fragile console.

Oh, and don’t forget to add a screen protector because replacing a shattered screen is expensive.

From controllers to protection and everything in between, we’ve found the best Nintendo Switch accessories you can buy now. Well, let’s get to it.

The best Nintendo Switch accessories (2022)

Controller time ($80)

nintendo switch joy-cons
Image: KnowTechie

Look, we were going to look for third-party controllers to put here, but they’re pretty much all trash. The only notable exception is the $50 PowerA enhanced wireless range, because of their sweet licensed artwork.

If you need more controllers, buy Nintendo branded ones like the growing range of colored Joy-Cons, or the Pro Controller. Oh, I guess if you play lots of Super Smash Bros., get the PowerA GameCube style one, cause that’ll feel like you’re playing the original game.

Hori Split Pad Pro ($50)

hori split pad pro for nintendo switch
Image: KnowTechie

You can get the full-sized controller experience in handheld mode, with this sweet split controller from Hori. The big bonus here? You get two customizable back buttons, so you can easily trigger your most used in-game controls. Hori also adds turbo functionality so you don’t have to wear your thumbs out mashing fire buttons.

Genki Covert Dock for Nintendo Switch ($75)

Image: Genki

The dock that comes in your Nintendo Switch box is great if all you want to do is put your console behind your TV, but what if you want to use it while traveling? It’s bulky to stick into your bag and kinda looks fragile.

Enter Human Things yet again, with the new Genki Covert Dock. It uses GaN tech to stuff a USB PD charger, an HDMI output, and a USB port, so all the functionality of your bulky dock is shrunk into something the size of the Nintendo Switch power adapter. All you need to do is plug in some cables. Awesome.

We’ve been using one for some time now, and it really is a marvelous device. Ditch your dock, Genki is the future.

Nintendo Switch light up dock shield by PDP ($16)

light up dock for nintendo switch
Image: KnowTechie

PDP has your back if you still want to use the stock dock but feel it could do with some jazzing up. Each kit has two light-up dock covers like this one with the sheikah slate motif from Breath of the Wild to make the boring dock look awesome.

READ MORE: How to turn on dark mode on Nintendo Switch

They’re so cheap that you can get a few and change it up if you get bored of the pattern. Add 17 different color/pattern effects to the mix, and your boring gray dock will never be the same again.

Up-Switch Orion ($300)

orion from upswitch dock for nintendo switch
Image: KnowTechie

Ever wished your Nintendo Switch screen was larger? Up-Switch has you covered with the Orion. Dock your console into the back, and you’ll get an 11.6-inch screen to play on.

The trade-off? You’re in the docked mode, so no touchscreen. You’ll also need an external power source, like a power bank. Oh, and the screen adds 1.5 pounds to the weight you’ll be carrying around.

Ammo Kinergy game cartridge holder ($13)

modpacer nintendo switch carrying case for games
Image: Josh Knowles / KnowTechie

If you haven’t read it yet, you should totally go read the backstory of this nifty Nintendo Switch cartridge case. While Josh is pretty perplexed by the weirdness of the instruction manual, I’m all for it. I mean, how often do you actually get a device that’s both useful and mysterious?

It’s like the little snippets of lore found on weapons and collectibles in the game Destiny, and I love that game’s weirdness. Anyway, the Ammo Kinergy case also holds 18 games, both Joy-Con wrist strap attachments, and the mystery it holds. Sweet.

KontrolFreeks thumbsticks ($15)

kontrolfreek grips on switch controller
Image: KnowTechie

While we love both the Joy-Cons and the Pro Controller here at KnowTechie, we’re less enthused about the thumbsticks used by Nintendo. I mean, besides the drift issues, those stubby little Joy-Con thumbsticks aren’t really usable by anyone out of grade school.

That’s where KontrolFreek comes in, with a full range of height-enhancing, grip-fixing extenders for those thumbsticks so you can finally play Mario Odyssey without wanting to throw your controllers more than Nintendo suggests.

SanDisk MicroSDXC memory card (varies)

sandisk switch sdcard
Image: KnowTechie

Once you’ve put a few games onto your Nintendo Switch, you’ll find that the internal storage fills up pretty quickly. Even playing games from cartridge adds files to the internal storage, so you’ll find yourself needing a microSD card to add more space. This is one of the best accessories you can buy for your Nintendo Switch, and really should be the first thing you order.

Sure, you could just buy any old microSD card, but where’s the fun in that? SanDisk has some officially-licensed microSD cards for the Nintendo Switch, with Zelda logos for the 64GB size, a Mario Mushroom on the 128GB size, and an all-yellow Invincibility Star on the 256GB, so you can pack in more games in style.

Orzly Grip Case for Nintendo Switch Lite ($15)

grip case for nintendo switch lite
Image: KnowTechie

If you’ve opted for the Nintendo Switch Lite, you might be wanting a protective case so you don’t smash it while you’re playing Super Smash Bros. outside of the house.

Orzly has a great grip case that covers everything except the buttons in protective TPU material. It’s got cut-outs for all the vents and ports, a kickstand, and even two hidden compartments in the grips so you can carry two additional game cartridges. That’s pretty darn cool.

Funlab Travel Carrying Case Compatible with Nintendo Switch System ($33)

carrying case for nintendo switch
Image: KnowTechie

Since most Nintendo accessories tend to be Mario-themed, why not switch it up with this Luigi-themed carrying case.

It’s designed to mimic his signature green and blue overalls, with the inside featuring an insert with sculpted sections to fit the Nintendo Switch, the dock, the charger, the Joy-Con straps, the insert that connects Joy-Cons into a normal controller, pockets for game cartridges, cables and more.

Whew, bet you didn’t know that the skinny Mario Brother could pack away the goods.

Ring Fit Adventure ($80)

nintendo ring fit adventure game box
Image: KnowTechie

Every Nintendo console in recent years has come with motion controls, and the Nintendo Switch and its Joy-Cons is no exception. That means it’s perfect for motion-activated games or in this case RingFit Adventures which Nintendo-fies your daily workouts.

Using the Ring accessory and leg strap, your two Joy-Cons turn your body into the controller, letting you jog, sprint, and throw knees through dozens of adventure-packed levels. Attack by throwing shoulders, refill your life counter by throwing shapes (yoga shapes, to be exact), and become a “master squatter.”

Oh, and don’t forget to play the minigames, which Nintendo is always fantastic at creating.

Mario Kart Live: Home Circuit ($100)

mario kart live home circuit kit
Image: KnowTechie

Ever wanted to turn your home into a Mario Kart circuit? Well, now you can, because this game kit gives you everything you need.

Place the cardboard gates around your home to make the racetrack, then turn your Nintendo Switch into an augmented reality controller to race the included RC car through the course you created.

Add more kits to race multiplayer cars around your living room, but look out for those virtual shells!

Nintendo LABO (varies)

nintendo labo
Image: KnowTechie

Remember all the fun you had with cardboard boxes as a kid? Bring that fun back to the digital age, with the LABO kits.

Pop out the sheets of cardboard, put them together in the order the game cart tells you to, and enjoy some insanely fun augmented reality experiences.

Depending on which kit you get, you can turn your Switch into a race sim rig, or a VR blaster, or even a piano.

UGREEN USB Ethernet adapter ($15)

ugreen usb 3.0 ethernet adapter
Image: KnowTechie

The wireless connection on the Nintendo Switch is good enough for most cases, but sometimes you want the stability of a wired network connection.

You could buy the official Nintendo Ethernet adapter, but this one is half the price and just as good. Plug it into the dock, and you’ll be brawling in Super Smash Bros. with low latency in no time.

HORI Compact Playstand ($22)

hori nintendo switch stand
Image: KnowTechie

Nintendo put a handy kickstand on the back of the Switch for if you want to use the Joy-Cons without a TV. That’s cool, but they also put the charging port on the bottom, so you can’t keep your Switch powered up while using the kickstand.

HORI fixes that issue with its foldable, compact Playstand, which raises the screen to a better height for your neck while allowing access to the USB-C charging port.

These are our picks for the best Nintendo Switch accessories

There’s a lot here, we know. But no matter if you are playing from the comfort of your home or on the go, these are some of the best Nintendo Switch accessories money can buy right now.

And without a doubt, these accessories will certainly add another level of entertainment to the Nintendo Switch.

Do Nintendo Switch retro controllers work with Steam? https://knowtechie.com/do-nintendo-switch-retro-controllers-work-with-steam/ Fri, 29 Jul 2022 14:19:16 +0000 https://knowtechie.com/?p=223854 Steam has tons of retro games that would be great to play with retro controllers.

The post Do Nintendo Switch retro controllers work with Steam? appeared first on KnowTechie.

]]>
When Nintendo launched its line of retro controllers, its goal was to offer classic, nostalgic controllers for the Nintendo Switch that gamers are familiar with. But will Nintendo’s retro controllers work on other platforms, like Steam?

For a quick refresher, Steam is a PC gaming platform with thousands of available games to choose from.

With tons of classics to choose from, Steam would be a great platform for users to feel nostalgic using one of Nintendo’s classic controller designs to play some retro games.

But Nintendo designed its retro controllers with the Switch in mind. So, will they work on Steam? Let’s find out.

Can you use Nintendo Switch retro controllers on Steam?

Short answer: Yes

When the retro Nintendo controllers originally came out, Nintendo designed them specifically for the Switch. But in July of 2022, Steam pushed an update to its client that added support for the retro controllers on Steam.

steam update notes on a purple background showing nintendo switch retro controller compatiblity
Image: KnowTechie

Of course, it’s probably not easy to play some computer games with Nintendo’s retro controllers. I imagine you’d have a hard time using an older controller layout in a game like Elden Ring.

But if you play a lot of retro games, these controllers might feel pretty good. Imagine hopping on the original Final Fantasy VII with a throwback NES controller. It could transport you back to a time when video games were made for love instead of absolute greed.

However, you will have to get past the supply limits to snag one of these controllers.

When writing this, the SNES and the original NES retro controller are available on Nintendo’s website. And the website states, “an active Nintendo Switch Online membership is required to purchase.”

But the Nintendo 64 and SEGA Genesis retro controllers are currently sold out at the time of writing. Thankfully, retailers like Amazon and others have them available too, but scalpers have them overly priced, so just a fair warning.

So if you want to go retro on Steam, you’ll have to settle for NES or SNES for now. Or keep your eye on the Nintendo website for restocks of the other controllers.

The PS5 and Nintendo Switch will still be hard to come by in 2022 https://knowtechie.com/it-will-still-be-hard-to-get-a-ps5-and-nintendo-switch-in-2022/ Wed, 11 May 2022 14:41:06 +0000 https://knowtechie.com/?p=200594 Both companies' sales projections are lower than expected.

The console shortage that has been plaguing gamers for more than a year is going to continue, according to Nintendo and Sony executives.

The two major players in the gaming space say that component shortages continue to hinder production.

Both Sony and Nintendo recently released their earnings announcements for the last fiscal year, ending in March.

READ MORE: Sony raises PS5 prices in most markets over inflation fears

And included in those reports were projections for console sales for both companies. Neither of the numbers is very impressive.

Sony’s console sale projections are a bit of a disappointment compared to previous projections. The company aims to sell around 18 million PS5 consoles during this fiscal year. That’s over 4 million less than the previous projection of 22.6 million units.

PlayStation 5 Standard vs. Digital Edition
Image: KnowTechie

READ MORE: TCL says new Xbox Series X and PS5 Pro consoles are on the way

Still, that is a better forecast than the numbers for the latest fiscal year. During that year, Sony only sold 11.5 million units, a much less impressive number than the 14.8 million projected sales.

Nintendo says it plans to sell around 21 million Switch units this year, thanks to its already established inventory and supply chains. That’s less than the company’s sales last year (23 million), which were propelled by lockdowns.

What is causing subpar projections from Sony and Nintendo?

new nintendo switch oled
Image: KnowTechie

When it comes to Nintendo, the company can likely attribute the drop in sales to the fact that the console is five years old now.

Sure, Nintendo has seen its fair share of component shortages, though not as much as Sony and Microsoft have seen with their new consoles. Add in the new competition, like Valve’s Steam Deck, and that could mean it’s time for Nintendo to deliver a new console.

But in Sony’s case, the PS5 has never been able to keep up with demand since its launch. Supply chain shortages and COVID restrictions affected the production of the consoles greatly. And it doesn’t look like that’s going to stop anytime soon.

For those looking to get ahold of a new PS5 or Nintendo Switch, 2022 could still be your year. You’ll just have to make sure you keep an eye on all outlets and take advantage of listings whenever you see the console in stock.

The madness around snagging consoles from Nintendo or Sony is likely going to continue for a while.

Fans of the Legend of Zelda franchise have been waiting years for the highly anticipated sequel to The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild. And unfortunately, that wait has just been delayed even further.

Nintendo just announced on Twitter that it has delayed the sequel to the beloved game until the spring of 2023. The company had originally planned to release the game sometime in 2022, but that’s no longer going to happen.

“In order to make this game’s experience something special, the entire development team is continuing to work diligently on this game,” said Legend of Zelda producer, Eiji Aonuma. “So please wait a little longer.”

The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild launched on the Nintendo Switch back in March of 2017. The game was an immediate success. It received praise for its massive open world and earned a spot as the highest-rated game of 2017 on Metacritic.

And The Legend of Zelda is an incredibly storied franchise dating back to the late 1980s. So there’s really no surprise that gamers everywhere can’t wait to get their hands on a Breath of the Wild sequel.

But, we’ll just have to remain patient for now. While it looked like a 2022 release date could be possible, spring 2023 is still not too far away.

Let’s just hope that the game doesn’t see any more delays and we finally get the Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild sequel that we’ve been waiting for all this time.

The post Switch owners can now group games in folders appeared first on KnowTechie.

]]>
Nintendo launched the Switch more than five years ago, and for some reason, they’re just getting around to giving users the ability to group games in folders. That’s right; Switch owners can now organize all their games in folders thanks to a new firmware update.

For example, if you have a bunch of Mario games in your library, you can create a specific folder that houses all your Mario games in an easy-to-find location. Have a bunch of Pokémon games? Slap them in a Pokémon folder. You get the gist of it.

The company calls the new feature “groups,” and it sounds like a helpful feature on paper. But in practice, it’s a whole different story.

READ MORE: The Nintendo Switch Online app finally makes it easy to add friends

For instance, groups can’t be placed on the home screen. Instead, to find your groups or create new ones, you’ll have to scroll all the way to the right to the vertical list and select “All Software” and press L.

Creating a group is a straightforward process, but you’ll need to know where to look. We’ll walk you through the whole process here.

READ MORE: The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild sequel has been delayed

Is there a limit on the number of games you can add to a group? The company says users can add up to 100 groups, maxing out at 200 titles per folder.

Nintendo added this new grouping feature in a firmware update (version 14.0), which is available to download now. Additional updates include additional Bluetooth controls and some tweaks to volume controls.

The post Yes, Nintendo’s Wii and DSi stores are down, and no one knows why appeared first on KnowTechie.

]]>
Nintendo has seemingly abandoned both the Wii and DSi stores without any word to its customers. Both of these stores have gone completely offline, leaving customers to wonder if they’ll ever be able to access the stores again.

Over the weekend, Eurogamer reported that both of these game stores have been taken offline. The stores have been down since at least March 16. That means that it has now been five days since gamers could access those stores and Nintendo has yet to say anything.

Nintendo removed the ability to buy new content on these platforms years ago. Nintendo limited the DSi store back in 2017 and the Wii store lost its sales abilities in 2019. But both stores had remained available for users to download games that they already owned.

But not anymore. As the video above explains, you will see an error code when you try to enter the Nintendo eShop on one of these devices.

On the Wii, users see a blank white screen and then an error code when trying to enter the store. Error code 209601 is what you will see, indicating a network error. DSi users see error code 290502 when trying to enter the store, again indicating a sort of network error.

As of now, it is unclear whether these shops being removed is intentional or not. Nintendo has yet to come out and say anything about the disappearance of the shops.

There’s a chance that Nintendo took down the shops for the Wii and DSi to perform some backend server maintenance. But it is very strange that the company has not released a statement regarding the removal of the shops.

We’ll update this article with any additional information as soon as we hear anything.

The post The 3DS and Wii U eShop is shutting down in 2023 – download these games before they’re gone appeared first on KnowTechie.

]]>
Nintendo’s 3DS was one of the gaming company’s most popular consoles. The Wii U wasn’t nearly as popular, but still had some great games available. Sadly, both consoles’ eShop will be shutting down in the near future.

Nintendo is currently focusing all of its efforts on the Switch, which has become one of the most popular gaming consoles in the world. In fact, Nintendo recently announced that it would soon be ending its eShop support for both the 3DS and Wii U in March of 2023.

To catch you up, the 3DS was a dual-screened handheld console that solidified Nintendo’s spot as king of handheld gaming. And the Wii U was the predecessor to the popular Switch, offering users the ability to play games on their TV or on the touchscreen included on the Wii U GamePad.

With gamers losing the ability to purchase games digitally on the 3DS and Wii U next year, we thought it would be a good idea to put together a list of some of the best eShop games that you should download and try on those consoles before you lose the ability.

Below, we’ve compiled a list of some of the games that stand out on both of these consoles. This is by no means a comprehensive list of the games available on the 3DS and the Wii U. These are just some of the ones that stood out to us.

These Nintendo 3DS games defined a generation

nintendo 3ds console
Image: KnowTechie

We’ll start by taking a look at some of the Nintendo 3DS games on the eShop that you won’t want to miss out on. For years, the 3DS was the ultimate handheld gaming experience, and Nintendo supported the console with tons of games.

From Mario to Zelda and tons of other familiar Nintendo franchises, the 3DS has an outstanding library of Nintendo games that you can experience. Here are some of our favorites.

Super Smash Bros. for 3DS

First up on our list is a franchise that most Nintendo fans will be familiar with. Like others in the franchise, Super Smash Bros. for 3DS brings some of the most iconic Nintendo characters together for some all-out-brawl entertainment.

Super Smash Bros. for 3DS gives you the excitement of Smash Bros. right in the palm of your hand. Smash Bros. has always been chaotic excellence in the form of a video game, and this game follows that same pattern.

New Super Mario Bros. 2

Next up, we have everybody’s favorite Italian plumber siblings in a 2012 return to form. New Super Mario Bros. 2 brings back the 2D side-scrolling, platformer action that helped millions fall in love with Nintendo in the first place.

But this time around, the focus is a little different. You may notice that everything is gold in New Super Mario Bros. 2, and that is definitely by design.

Not only must you make your way through the various levels in the game, but you’re also tasked with collecting as many gold coins as you can, to try to compete against high scores from other players.

Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate

Monster Hunter is another recognizable franchise in the Nintendo gaming world. And Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate is one of the franchise’s best entries.

Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate contains tons of monster-hunting action that you can experience with your friends. And it’s no walk in the park, either. You’ll spend hours mastering monster mechanics as you hunt the game’s hardened enemies and fight your way through its amazing storyline.

Fire Emblem Fates: Revelation

Fire Emblem Fates: Revelation is a unique entry in this list. It is the third campaign in the 2016 title Fire Emblem Fates. And Revelation is only available as downloadable content.

Fire Emblem Fates was released in two different versions. Each version tells the same story of two kingdoms at war. Fire Emblem Fates: Birthright sees the player fight for the side of the kingdom where they were born. The second version, Fire Emblem Fates: Conquest, has the player fighting for the other side.

Fire Emblem Fates: Revelations is sold as a DLC for one of the games. This campaign sees the player unite the two kingdoms to fight together against a shared enemy. This campaign is only available digitally, so you’ll want to grab it before the eShop is gone for good.

The Legend of Zelda: Majora’s Mask 3D

Of course, we couldn’t make this list without showing some love to the Zelda franchise. The Legend of Zelda: Majora’s Mask 3D is the 2015 remake of the classic Nintendo 64 title.

The Legend of Zelda: Majora’s Mask 3D sees the player take control of Link, the series fabled protagonist, as he is stuck in a three-day time loop.

Stuck inside the parallel world of Termina, you must use what you learn over the three-day period to defeat Skull Kid and stop the moon from crashing into and destroying the world.

Mario Kart 7

And here we have one of my favorite game franchises of all time. If I could have majored in Mario Kart in college, then it definitely wouldn’t have taken me five years to graduate.

Mario Kart 7 for the Nintendo 3DS took everything we loved from the franchise and delivered it to the most popular handheld console at the time.

The game introduces new mechanics, like gliders and underwater driving, while maintaining the tight, exciting mechanics that we all know and love from previous Mario Kart titles.

Metroid: Samus Returns

Metroid: Samus Returns is a 3DS remake of the Game Boy title by the name of Metroid 2. This sidescrolling shooter features improved mechanics over the original, like 360-degree aiming and an arsenal of new powers and abilities.

And the graphics are miles ahead of what the original game had to offer. Metroid 2 was released back in 1991. Metroid: Samus Returns catapults the game into the 21st century, and it’s a game you won’t want to miss on your Nintendo 3DS.

Fire Emblem: Awakening

Closing out our list of 3DS games, we have Fire Emblem: Awakening. Considered to be a very difficult game in its time, Fire Emblem: Awakening is a strategy RPG with unique mechanics and deep customization.

You will have to use a combination of tactics and character building as you move your way across the battlefield in Fire Emblem: Awakening. If you are a fan of turn-based or tactical RPGs, then you definitely want to check out Fire Emblem: Awakening on the 3DS eShop while you still can.

Now for a few Wii U games that you’ll want to check out

wii u console from nintendo

And for those of you still enjoying gaming on the Wii U, you’ll also, unfortunately, be losing access to the eShop in March of 2023.

But you still have some time to download and try out some of the games that the console has to offer. Here are some of the Nintendo Wii U games that you should check out while you have the chance.

Xenoblade Chronicles X

First up on the list, we have Xenoblade Chronicles X. Being a spiritual successor to the original Xenoblade Chronicles, this game brings a combination of familiar gameplay alongside some new mechanics and improved graphics.

Xenoblade Chronicles X is an open-world action RPG. The player explores the vast open world of the planet Mira. You will fight enemies and complete quests to gain experience along the way.

Experience is used to enhance your character’s abilities with new skills and improved stats. You can even hop into a Skell, an armored mech that makes traversing the dangerous planet of Mira a bit easier. If exciting, action RPG combat is what you like, head to the eShop and give Xenoblade Chronicles X a try. Or, wait until Xenoblades 3 is available.

The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker HD

And next, we’re on to another amazing addition to the Zelda franchise that you won’t want to miss. Released back in 2013, fans were initially skeptical about the graphical decision that Nintendo made with The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker HD.

That skepticism quickly vanished after players got their hands on the game. At its core, The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker HD is a Zelda game, and it stays true to its roots.

This HD version is a remake of the 2003 GameCube title. It features familiar characters and gameplay alongside a barrage of new enemies and obstacles. Zelda fans who haven’t tried this game out yet should definitely add it to their collection.

Nintendo Land

Next up we have the popular party game Nintendo Land. Somewhat reminiscent of games like Mario Party, Nintendo Land is a game best enjoyed with friends. It features several exciting mini-games that will keep you on your toes as your Mii avatar.

But you can still enjoy this game by yourself. Some of the mini-games are solo, so it’s just you against the clock. Much like Wii Sports for the original Wii, Nintendo Land became one of the staples of the Wii U console.

Splatoon

That brings us to our next entry on the list, Splatoon. Splatoon is the original colorful mess that bred the successful sequel, Splatoon 2.

Where Splatoon 2 has become a fan favorite on the Nintendo Switch thanks to its exciting multiplayer gameplay, the original Splatoon is where the excitement all started.

In Splatoon, you and your team take a variety of paint guns onto the map to try and cover it with as much of your team’s color as possible. It’s chaotic and bright and full of non-stop colorful action.

Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate

Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate was one of the best games to come to the Nintendo Wii U early in the console’s lifetime. This game was released on both the Wii U and the 3DS. And it featured cross-save gameplay so you could play at home or on the go.

The Wii U version of the game was received much better than the 3DS version, with improved gameplay and better graphics. The Monster Hunter franchise has been a huge success on Nintendo consoles, and Monster Hunter 3 HD for the Wii U is one of the series’ most popular entries.

Mario Kart 8

Lastly, to close this list out, we have maybe the best Mario Kart game to ever come out. I’m a little biased, having spent dozens of hours learning how to cheat my way to victory on Rainbow Road in Mario Kart 64. But the success of Mario Kart 8 speaks for itself.

The game built upon everything that gamers love about the series, and refined it. You can customize your carts and experience 16 all-new tracks. With all of your favorite Mario characters, like Peach, Yoshi, Toad, and Bowser, the hours of fun that you can have in Mario Kart 8 are endless.

Honorable mentions

We couldn’t fit every game that you should try on the Wii U or the 3DS on our list. There are tons of games on the Nintendo eShop for these consoles that are worth a try. Here are a few honorable mentions that we found along the way.

There are a few honorable mentions for each console. Again, we couldn’t fit every single game on this list. If we missed a must-play game for either of these consoles, let us know down in the comments.

There are dozens more Nintendo Wii U and 3DS games to experience

In this list, we have 14 of the games that stand out the most to us on the Nintendo Wii U and 3DS consoles. But that doesn’t even begin to scrape the surface of what these consoles have to offer. These consoles were popular for years. And each one has dozens of great games that Nintendo fans will love.

But these are the ones that caught our eye. And with Nintendo abandoning the eShop on both of these consoles in March of 2023, your chances to try out these games are becoming pretty slim.

Now is the time to explore the eShop on your Wii U or 3DS and try out some new games. Before too long, you’ll no longer have a chance to do so.

Nintendo has announced its plans to halt the functionality of its eShop on several of its older consoles. Starting in March of 2023, gamers will no longer be able to access the eShop for digital game downloads on the Wii U or any of the various 3DS systems.

Nintendo announced its plans to abandon the eShop on these older consoles in a blog post on its website earlier this week. Leading up to the removal, some eShop functions will begin to phase out over the next year.

The first function to go will be the ability to add credit card funds to a Nintendo account using a Wii U or 3DS device. Users won’t be able to add money this way starting May 23, 2022.

Soon after that, users won’t be able to add Nintendo eShop gift card funds on the older consoles. That function will be phased out on August 29, 2022. Fortunately, you will still be able to redeem download codes on those consoles up until the eShop leaves for good in March of 2023.

Gamers will still be able to use their Wii U or 3DS console to play games online. They’ll also still get software updates after these changes. They’ll even be able to redownload games that they already own. They just won’t be able to make any new purchases.

This has been a long time coming. Nintendo’s Wii U and 3DS consoles were pretty popular in their time. But the company’s main squeeze has been the Nintendo Switch for a few years now.

Though most of the eShop’s functionality will be leaving in March of 2023, it’s nice to see that Nintendo will continue to support other online services for the Wii U and 3DS consoles.

It looks like Nintendo is currently uninterested in adding a metaverse or NFTs in its video games. While other game companies look to embrace the technologies, Nintendo seems to prefer the traditional style of video games. At least, for now.

Earlier this month, investors asked the company about the idea of molding new and developing technologies like the metaverse and NFTs into its video games. In response, the company’s president, Shuntaro Furukawa, didn’t seem too excited about the idea.

“We might consider something if we can find a way to convey a ‘Nintendo approach’ to the metaverse that many people can readily understand, but we do not think that is the situation at the present time,” they said. Furukawa didn’t address NFTs at all in their response.

But that’s not to say that the metaverse will forever be of no interest to the company.

Furukawa did mention Nintendo’s popular game Animal Crossing: New Horizons as an example of potential metaverse themes. The game lets users create their own islands and show them off to the world. “In that sense, the metaverse is of interest to us,” he says.

And even Furukawa’s answer to the question leaves the door open for the company to visit the metaverse idea in the future. The company doesn’t see the metaverse as beneficial “at this time.” But who knows what will happen in the next few years?

While NFTs are seemingly completely off of the radar for Nintendo, the metaverse is still on the table. The company isn’t pursuing anything related to the metaverse for now, but that could definitely change in the future.

Will the Nintendo Switch download games in Sleep Mode? https://knowtechie.com/will-the-nintendo-switch-download-games-in-sleep-mode/ Fri, 31 Dec 2021 19:45:58 +0000 https://knowtechie.com/?p=177505 Can you at least let your console rest while you wait for games to download?

The post Will the Nintendo Switch download games in Sleep Mode? appeared first on KnowTechie.

]]>
The Nintendo Switch, like other modern consoles, lets you download games from the internet so you don’t have to worry about keeping up with physical copies of all of your games.

All you have to do is head to the eShop on your Nintendo Switch console. From there, you can browse the various games, and buy and download any of them as long as you have the storage space.

This is a super convenient way to build up your game library, but you still have to wait for the game to download. That means a lot of downtime before you get a chance to play the games. This would be a great opportunity to put the console in Sleep Mode, so you can save a little bit of energy.

So, can you download Nintendo Switch games while in Sleep Mode?

Short answer: Yes

Fortunately, you can easily enter your Nintendo Switch into Sleep Mode while it is downloading a game in the background.

All you have to do is make sure your download is going before you enter Sleep Mode, and you’re good to go. The download will continue until it finishes or you wake the console up again.

Again, this is a great way to save some energy, either in the form of battery life or electricity, while you download games on your Nintendo Switch.

Maybe take that time to go outside and touch some grass or feel the sun. Or you can just do like I do and switch to gaming on your PC while waiting for downloads.

Being a mobile console, it’s especially important to save as much battery life on your Nintendo Switch as possible.

Fortunately, the console has a Sleep Mode, which lets you put the console in a dormant state that saves tons of energy without completely shutting the console down.

With Sleep Mode on your Nintendo Switch, you basically shut down all but the most basic functions on your console.

And instead of having to reboot the console completely when you’re ready to start gaming again, you just press one button, and the console springs back to life much more quickly than a full reboot.

But Sleep Mode isn’t necessarily the easiest feature to find on your Nintendo Switch. There isn’t a specific button that enables Sleep Mode on the console.

Fortunately, the process isn’t super complicated, and we’ve got step-by-step instructions to help you out.

How to enter Sleep Mode on your Nintendo Switch

Sleep Mode doesn’t completely shut down your Nintendo Switch, but you do have to use the console’s power button to get the correct option. Here’s what you want to do:

 1. Locate the Power button on the top of your Nintendo Switch consolehow to put your nintendo switch into sleep mode

 2. Press the button one time

 3. Your screen will go black and you will be in Sleep Mode

And it’s as simple as that. That’s all you have to do put your Nintendo Switch in Sleep Mode. There are a couple of other ways that you can enter sleep mode, but this is by far the easiest.

One other way is to hold that same power button until the console’s power menu pops up. You can also enter Sleep Mode by holding the Home button on the right Joy-Con controller to bring up the Quick settings menu and select Sleep Mode from there.

Nintendo gives users several different options for entering Sleep Mode, but the easiest way to do it is to simply press the Power button one time. Go ahead and take advantage of Sleep Mode on your Nintendo Switch.

Sleep Mode will even let you download games in the background, and you can turn the console back on just by pushing the Power button again and you won’t have to worry about the console fully booting up again.

Nintendo warns its Switch servers will be slammed on Christmas weekend https://knowtechie.com/nintendo-says-its-switch-servers-will-probably-be-overloaded-during-christmas/ Tue, 21 Dec 2021 14:21:34 +0000 https://knowtechie.com/?p=175923 The company recommends that you create your Nintendo accounts in advance.

As Christmas quickly approaches, Nintendo warns its customers of possible server overload as more gamers begin to make accounts on their new Switches. The company recommends that you create your accounts in advance, in an effort to avoid any long loading times.

Nintendo warned its users of possible server overload during Christmas weekend through a post on the official Japanese support page on Twitter. The company says that the overloaded servers would most likely show themselves during the creation of new accounts.

Here’s a Google Translation of what the tweet says:

This weekend, access will be concentrated on the Nintendo Account server, and it is expected that Nintendo Account will not be created immediately. If you are planning to use the Nintendo Switch family for the first time, we recommend that you create it in advance” – Nintendo Support

To help alleviate some of the strain on the servers and ensure that customers aren’t stuck without an account on Christmas Day, Nintendo is recommending that users create their new accounts early. That can be a little tough if you are gifting the console to someone else.

READ MORE: Gifting a console or game this year? Here’s what you need to know before wrapping them up

But it’s still smart to create an account, even if it’s temporary, to make sure that the intended person will at least be able to play some games until the servers have caught up and they can create their own accounts.

You can even go one step further and go ahead and get a game or two downloaded on the console. Nintendo is only pointing to creating accounts as a possible hiccup from server overload, but it’s possible that high traffic has much more of an effect.

If you go ahead and get a couple of games downloaded on the Nintendo Switch in advance, you won’t have to worry about overloaded servers on Christmas Day. Do yourself a favor and avoid potential catastrophe by setting up your new Switch console in advance.
