A recent report from KSL explains how Apple’s new Crash Detection feature triggers unwanted 911 calls.

Dispatchers in Summit County, Utah, have received an influx of Crash Detection calls, but most aren’t related to car accidents.

Instead, the alert goes off while people are skiing at nearby ski resorts. And many of these Crash Detection alerts come when a skiing accident hasn’t even occurred.

And this happens more often than you’d think. For instance, this Reddit user explains how his Apple Watch dialed 911 while he was going down a hill.

Apple’s new Crash Detection feature in the iPhone 14 and new Apple Watches alerts emergency services when it thinks you’ve been in an accident.

But it sometimes triggers when users are skiing fast down a mountain.

Crash Detection has a built-in safeguard against false alerts. When your iPhone or Apple Watch detects what it thinks is a crash, you have about 20 seconds to cancel the alert.

However, you likely won’t hear or feel the alert if you’re busy zooming down a mountain. So your device alerts emergency services, leaving you to explain yourself.

This isn’t the first we’ve heard of Apple’s Crash Detection sending out false alerts.

The same issue was recently discovered by theme park customers after a roller coaster ride triggered the crash detection alert.

But it also potentially saved a life in one man’s case. At the end of the day, Crash Detection is an amazing feature. But it could possibly use some tweaking going forward.

Crash Detection is available on the new iPhone 14 and the Apple Watch Series 8, Apple Watch Ultra, and the new Apple Watch SE.

Keep that in mind if you plan on skiing down a mountain this winter.

Quick Answer: To update an Apple Watch, follow these steps:

  1. Make sure that your Apple Watch is connected to its charger and within range of your iPhone.
  2. On your iPhone, open the Apple Watch app.
  3. Tap the My Watch tab, then tap General > Software Update.
  4. If an update is available, follow the on-screen instructions to download and install it.

Apple releases Apple Watch updates every so often during the year. Most updates are bug fixes, but some will give you new functionality.

In this post, we’ll show you how to keep your Apple Watch up to date. WatchOS updates keep your device safer and more efficient. The updates can include new features as well.

So, how do you know when your Apple Watch is ready for an update?

Most of the time, you’ll get a notification on your iPhone to let you know an update is ready. Additionally, the notification will ask if you want to update overnight.

Typically, you can confirm this notification, leave your iPhone and Apple Watch on their charger overnight, and you’ll wake up to an updated Watch.

But if you can’t wait for an update? Sometimes, you might want (or need) to manually update. No sweat, we’ll show you how.

Here’s how to keep your Apple Watch up to date

⚠ A few things before we start. Make sure your iPhone is on the latest version of iOS. Your Apple Watch needs at least 50% battery, and your iPhone needs to be on Wi-Fi. And lastly, keep your iPhone and Apple Watch near each other.

The update could take minutes, or it could take several hours.

Apple suggests updating overnight, so you’re not stuck waiting around.

Actually, yes. Luckily, most of them are easy to fix.

Apple Watch update issues

Some things could stop your Apple Watch from updating. Thankfully, most fixes are extremely straightforward.

First, if you are having issues during the update process, ensure it’s connected properly to its charger. Most of the time, this solves most issues.

If not, restart the Apple Watch by holding the side button until you see Power Off prompt, then dragging the slider to confirm the shutdown.

Then, hold the side button again to turn it back on. From here, restart your iPhone and then try updating again.

Apple Watch updates give you the latest and greatest features

Now, your Apple Watch is updated to the latest watchOS. Even better, you know exactly what to do next time

While Apple Watch updates are often small, the company releases updates that improve the smartwatch’s performance or gives you access to features that weren’t previously available.

Crash detection has only been available on the Apple Watch for a few weeks, and it has already saved a man’s life after he slammed his car into a pole.

Indianapolis resident Nolan Abell is one of the first people we’ve heard from who has been helped by crash detection on the Apple Watch.

Abell was driving in the middle of the night when he lost control and crashed into a pole.

He describes feeling the haptic feedback on his Apple Watch after the crash. The watch asked if he was there, and when there was no response, it automatically called emergency services to come and help.

“If it weren’t for this watch, who knows how long it would’ve been for help to get to me. Someone would’ve found me eventually, but this had EMS to me within five minutes,” recalls Abell to ABC News.

Crash detection is a new feature on Apple devices. And it’s not just limited to the Apple Watch Series 8. It’s also available on iPhone 14 models, as well as the second-generation Apple Watch SE and Apple Watch Ultra.

Crash detection initially suffered from some false alerts. Users have reported that their Apple Watch triggered crash detection on amusement park rides, like rollercoasters.

But this shows how useful crash detection can be and its potential to save lives. Just be careful if you take your Apple Watch or iPhone 14 on a rollercoaster.

Doctor urges patients to wear an Apple Watch after ladder fall https://knowtechie.com/doctor-urges-patients-to-wear-an-apple-watch-after-ladder-fall/ Thu, 27 Oct 2022 16:30:27 +0000 https://knowtechie.com/?p=251996 Fall detection on the Apple Watch has potentially saved another life.

The post Doctor urges patients to wear an Apple Watch after ladder fall appeared first on KnowTechie.

An Apple Watch is once again being praised, this time by a doctor who says that he was saved by his Apple Watch 5.

Originally reported by NBC Chicago, Dr. Thomas Ficho was pressure washing his house and took a risky step from his ladder to reach a spot. He tumbled five feet to the ground, losing consciousness.

When he woke up a few minutes later, a police officer met him in his yard. After asking how the cop knew he needed help, the officer pointed to his Apple Watch.

The watch’s fall detection feature had gone off and alerted emergency services. Now, Dr. Ficho is urging his patients to start wearing Apple Watches.

“The majority of my patients are grown adults and a lot of them are over 60. And I have told every single one of them that they need to have one of these watches,” Dr. Ficho told NBC Chicago. I don’t even work in Apple infrastructure, I work in PC infrastructure. I’m not a crazy Apple person.

Dr. Ficho operates a practice that serves many older patients. A lot of the people he sees are 60 and over.

And he recommends that every one of them wear an Apple Watch for fall detection. In his interview with NBC Chicago, he recalled a previous patient he served before Apple Watches were available.

That patient fell out of her shower, broke her hip, and was unable to move. Someone found her dead three days later. “All she needed was a watch,” Ficho says.

This is not the first time that the Apple Watch has potentially saved someone’s life. Fall detection is clearly an incredibly useful feature that can help many people.

The post WatchOS 9.1 is out – here’s how to download on Apple Watch appeared first on KnowTechie.

]]>
Apple’s watchOS 9 came out last month alongside the release of the Apple Watch Series 8, and now the company has released the next update, watchOS 9.1.

The latest watchOS update includes several improvements, some of which we’ve already heard about. Most notably, there are three new features coming to your Apple Watch with watchOS 9.1.

First, Apple has improved the potential battery life of the Apple Watch while using certain features.

Outdoor Walking, Running, and Hiking Workouts have been modified to reduce the frequency of heart rate and GPS readings to offer more battery life.

You can also now download music on your Apple Watch while it’s off-charger on WiFi or cellular. And finally, the update adds support for the Matter smart home standard.

Bug fixes coming with watchOS 9.1

In addition to a few new features, the watchOS 9.1 update also brings several bug fixes. Bugs are inevitable with major updates, like watchOS 9.0, so it’s nice to see fixes rolled out so quickly.

Here’s a list of watchOS 9.1 bug fixes:

  • Voice feedback of average pace during Outdoor Run may be incorrect
  • Chance of rain estimates shown in Weather app may not match estimates on iPhone in current location
  • Hourly weather complications may label times as AM during PM hours
  • Time duration displayed during Strength Training Workout may not advance for some users
  • VoiceOver may not announce app name prior to reading the notification when receiving multiple notifications

It’s possible that there are even more bug fixes that come with watchOS 9.1. But these are just the ones highlighted on Apple’s support page.

Who can install watchOS 9.1?

Unfortunately, not every Apple Watch can install watchOS 9 and, in turn, watchOS 9.1. The latest operating system is only available on Apple Watches released in 2018 or later.

That includes the Apple Watch Series 4 and up, the new Apple Watch SE, and the Apple Watch Ultra. You can also install the operating system update on the first-generation Apple Watch SE.

That means that the Apple Watch Series 3 and previous models fall off the list of Apple Watches that can install watchOS 9.1.

How to install the watchOS update

For most users, updates like this one will be installed on the Apple Watch automatically. But if you don’t want to wait, you can force the update through the settings menus on your Apple Watch.

  1. Update your Apple Watch from your iPhone

Pick up your iPhone, then open the Apple Watch appapple watch app icon on iphone

  2. Tap the My Watch tab, then General apple watch app screen

  3. Select Software Updateiphone update screen

  4. Select Download and Install

  5. Update your OS from your Apple Watch

Make sure your Apple Watch is connected to WiFi, place on the charger, and tap Settingsapple watch face on charger

  6. Tap on Generalgeneral settings menu on apple watch

  7. Tap Software Updatesoftware update screen on smartwatch

  8. If an update is available, you’ll see Install on the screen. Tap on the word to updateup to date screen for apple wearable

That’s all you have to do to force the update on your Apple Watch. Be sure that the watch is charging or that the battery is over 50 percent before starting the update.

Save some battery life with watchOS 9.1

The most notable upgrade that comes with the watchOS 9.1 update is likely the new battery life improvement.

Most users are looking for all-day battery life on their smartwatches, and this update should help.

If you haven’t already gotten the latest watchOS update on your own Apple Watch, follow the steps above to force the update.

The post How to use the Walkie-Talkie feature on Apple Watch appeared first on KnowTechie.

]]>
I know I’m showing my age here, but I remember growing up wanting a Dick Tracy wristwatch that worked like a radio.

Technology has moved on from those visions of the future, and we can have cellular phones on our wrists, but that childhood dream still lives on.

It seems that someone at Apple also grew up with the same hankerings because the Apple Watch has an inbuilt Walkie-Talkie app that allows two Apple Watch users to easily talk to each other.

Here’s how to use the built-in Walkie-Talkie feature on Apple Watch

Before we start, there are a few provisos we need to go over.

First, you can’t use the Walkie-Talkie app with people that aren’t already on your contact list. Everyone will need an Apple Watch running WatchOS 5.3 or later.

Secondly, FaceTime is also required to make and receive calls.

Skip this step if your Apple Watch is part of Family Setup.

Additionally, users need to be in a country with Walkie-Talkie support.

How to use Walkie Talkie on Apple Watch

how to use apple's walkie-talkie feature on apple waatch
Image: KnowTechie
  1. Open the Walkie-Talkie app on your Apple Watch
  2. Select Add Friends, scroll through your contact list, and choose the person you want to talk with
  3. That person needs to approve Walkie-Talkie access on their Apple Watch. They’ll get a notification to do just that, and the card will go yellow when approved
  4. To talk
    • Open the Walkie-Talkie app
    • Choose the friend you want to talk to
    • Touch & hold the large yellow button (seen above) and say your message
    • When you let go, the message should appear on your friend’s Apple Watch
  5. Responding to a message is done from the same button on the other Apple Watch
  6. The Digital Crown adjusts the playback volume

How to temporarily disable Walkie-Talkie on Apple Watch

You might not want to be always available, so you can disable Walkie-Talkie temporarily from the Control Center.

Image: KnowTechie
  1. Swipe up from the bottom edge of your screen
  2. Tap the Walkie-Talkie icon to disable it (it will go gray)
  3. Tap it again to enable the feature, and turn the icon yellow

How to remove a Walkie-Talkie contact on Apple Watch

If, for whatever reason, you want to remove a Walkie-Talkie contact, swipe left on their contact card on the Apple Watch app and tap X to delete them.

You can also do this from the companion Watch app on your iPhone. Here’s how:

  1. Open the Watch app
  2. Find the My Watch tab, then tap on Walkie-Talkie
  3. Tap on Edit, then use the minus (-) button to remove a contact

The Walkie-Talkie Apple Watch app is a great way to keep in touch with close contacts, making it almost as easy as an in-person conversation.

Remember the time of day when you try to send a message, as not even your closest friends will like being pinged at an inopportune moment.

How the Apple, Pixel, and Galaxy watches compare in automation https://knowtechie.com/how-the-apple-pixel-and-galaxy-watches-compare-in-smartwatch-automation/ Sat, 22 Oct 2022 12:49:00 +0000 https://knowtechie.com/?p=250131 In terms of smartwatch automation, how do the Apple Watch, Google Pixel Watch, and Samsung Galaxy Watch compare to one another?

The post How the Apple, Pixel, and Galaxy watches compare in automation appeared first on KnowTechie.

]]>
In recent years, the smartwatch is one of the hottest device categories in the consumer electronics market. Between features and automation, there are plenty of reasons people love smartwatches.

Various leading technology companies sell these fashionable and functional wearables, which come with a slew of cool and helpful features for users.

Three brands dominate the smartwatch market right now: Apple, Google, and Samsung. Their popular smartwatches share similar features, but each watch has a unique design, user interface (UI), and price point.

Another crucial part of a smartwatch is automation. It helps smartwatches perform more tasks for their users without requiring them to push any buttons or tap the screen.

In terms of automation, how do the Apple Watch, Google Pixel Watch, and Samsung Galaxy Watch compare to one another?

Is automation important in a smartwatch?

One feature many consumers want out of their smartwatches is automation. In simple terms, automation describes a wide range of technologies enabling devices to perform tasks with little human interaction.

Automation allows these advanced wearable devices to automatically perform some task or function. On a smartwatch, a good example of automation would be detecting when a user is exercising.

That feature would turn on workout mode to track calories, the time the user spends working out, GPS capabilities for outdoor exercise, and more.

It’s no secret that the world is becoming increasingly data-driven and tech-savvy. So, it’s understandable that today’s consumers want next-level automation in their devices.

Comparing Apple, Pixel, and Galaxy watches and their automatic features

Smartwatches are essentially small, wearable extensions of the smartphones customers use every day.

Most smartwatch models have to connect to the user’s smartphone. That said, there are some smartwatches that work as standalone devices.

These watches do not require a connection to a smartphone to function properly, meaning users can access their favorite smartphone features on their wrist without having their phone nearby.

Let’s take a deeper look at each brand of smartwatch and what types of automation each one offers to its owner.

Apple Watch

Image: KnowTechie

Apple Watch is extremely popular – it commanded 30% of the global smartwatch market in 2021.

These watches offer many automatic features, such as detecting irregular heartbeats, monitoring physical activity and workouts, and measuring your blood oxygen level.

The latest Apple Watch is also capable of detecting car crashes and calling emergency services. On top of that, it can detect falls, track the amount of time you wash your hands, and monitor your sleep cycle.

You can also use the Home app to control any HomeKit-enabled devices and accessories, such as thermostats, locks, lights, smart TVs, window shades, and smart outlets.

Other automatic features include locating your device if you’ve misplaced or lost it, unlocking other Apple devices, connecting to your headphones, and tracking ovulation for users who want more insight into their menstrual cycle.

Apple Pay is also available on Apple Watch to streamline transactions and automatically charge payments to your credit or debit cards.

Google Pixel Watch

Image: KnowTechie

The Pixel Watch incorporates some popular features commonly found in Fitbit fitness trackers because Google officially acquired Fitbit in 2021.

For example, Google Pixel Watch accurately and automatically detects heart rate, tracks your sleep stages and health metrics, and allows you to automatically connect to your Google smart home devices using the Google Home app.

According to Google’s Pixel Watch website, its smartwatch models will soon have fall detection features and call emergency services if you need help.

Pixel Watches also have near-field communication (NFC), which allows data to transfer automatically to and from nearby devices.

Samsung Galaxy Watch

samsung galaxy watch 4 with walkie-talkie app
Image: KnowTechie

The Samsung Galaxy Watch line comes with some impressive features. For example, some of its most popular apps are Spotify, Facer, MapMyRun, ParKing: Find My Car, and Strava.

Galaxy Watches can also perform various tasks automatically, such as heart rate monitoring, GPS, sleep tracking, measuring blood oxygen levels, and more.

Galaxy Watches also have a BioActive sensor, which measures your body composition.

Additionally, if you select the Swimming option on Samsung Health, your watch will automatically turn on Water Lock mode to protect the watch, preventing it from inadvertently activating other watch features.

One interesting feature of the Galaxy Watch is that it will automatically detect your breathing. If you’re stressed, anxious, or out of breath, the watch will alert you and tell you how to adjust your breathing pattern.

Why consider automation features on a smartwatch?

smartwatch on wrist
Image: Unsplash

You might wonder why smartwatches come with automatic features for their users. The answer is quite simple.

People want their devices to take over tasks automatically without having to press buttons or talk to a voice assistant.

Aside from some of the features outlined for each watch above, all of them are capable of sharing text, call, and app notifications from your smartphone.

They can also show you the time, set alarms, provide reminders, and other essential tasks to help you day and night.

Automation is present in virtually every aspect of your life, and smartwatches are no exception.

The bottom line

Apple, Pixel, and Galaxy smartwatches are all great products that provide users with next-level connectivity and convenience.

In addition to performing important tasks, these smartwatches come in various sizes and designs.

All three watches have similar automation capabilities. And that can make it challenging to choose between them.

However, your decision comes down to which smartphone you have, how much you can afford to spend, and which features you find to be most essential.

How to turn off Apple Watch stand notifications https://knowtechie.com/how-to-turn-off-apple-watch-stand-notifications/ Thu, 20 Oct 2022 13:31:37 +0000 https://knowtechie.com/?p=242438 Don't let your Apple Watch shame you for sitting ever again.

The post How to turn off Apple Watch stand notifications appeared first on KnowTechie.

]]>
Smartwatches are great for gathering health and fitness data and helping us live healthier lifestyles. But do we need our Apple Watches ordering us to stand every hour?

It’s no secret that sitting for long periods of time is bad for our health. No one disputes that nowadays.

However, having a snarky little gadget remind us that our sedentary jobs and hobbies are slowly killing us isn’t great for morale. Luckily, you can disable the feature if you’d rather decide when you should stand.

Are you tired of your gadgets telling you how to live your life? Let’s discuss how to turn off Apple Watch stand notifications.

How to turn off ‘time to stand’ notifications on Apple Watch

If you are ready to take control of your standing times, we’ll walk you through the process of turning stand notifications off.

How to turn off stand reminders on Apple Watch

  1. Press the Digital Crown and tap SettingsApple Watch arrows pointing to the crown and setting

  2. Scroll down and select ActivityApple Watch with arrow pointing to activity tab

  3. Toggle off Stand RemindersApple watch with arrow pointing to standing reminder

That’s it. Once you’ve switched the setting off, your Apple Watch will stop judging you for sitting. You can, of course, reenable the feature in the same place at any time.

Switch off time to stand notifications using iPhone

Here’s how to disable ‘time to stand’ notifications in the iOS Watch app:

  1. Launch the Watch app and select My Watch

  1. Go to Activity

  1. Toggle off Stand Reminders

And there you have it, you’ve now successfully disabled stand reminders using your iPhone.

What else will our Apple Watches remind us to do?

The time to stand prompt may be useful to those of us who get caught up in our work and lose track of time.

However, instead of having our gadgets tell us when to move, we could just teach ourselves to stop sitting for so long. In fact, this may be what the Apple Watch aims to do.

But if we allow our watches to tell us when to stand, where does it end? How much control do we allow our gadgets to have over our actions? What else will our watches start ordering us to do?

The post How to control your Apple Watch with your iPhone appeared first on KnowTechie.

The Apple Watch is best used as an additional display for notifications and messages on your wrist. But in some cases, you may want to see your Apple Watch screen on your iPhone, and now you can.

As part of the recent iOS 16 and WatchOS 9 updates, Apple Watch owners can now mirror their Watch screens onto their iPhones.

As long as the devices have the latest updates and are within Bluetooth range, you can mirror your Watch screen over to your iPhone.

NOTE: Apple Watch Mirroring is available only on the Apple Watch Series 6, 7, and 8.

This is a pretty sweet feature. You can check your Apple Watch on the charger in another room. Alternatively, it’s a great option for users with difficulty interacting with the small display.

Even the biggest Apple Watch, the new Apple Watch Ultra, only has a 49mm display. But when you mirror it onto your iPhone, it can be much larger.

How to mirror your Apple Watch on your iPhone

iOS 16 and WatchOS 9 brought a lot of new features to these products, and some aren’t as easy to find as others. But if you want to mirror your Watch to your iPhone, here’s how to do it.

  1. Open the Settings app and choose Accessibility. Apple mirroring accessibility settings on iphone

  2. Find the Apple Watch Mirroring toggle under the Physical and Motor section. apple watch mirroring iphone setup purple background

  3. Toggle that option, and a window with a simulated Apple Watch face will appear. Apple watch mirroring on iphone setup toggle on purple background

  4. Then, you can connect your Apple Watch and control it directly from this window. Apple watch mirroring setup on the iphone purple background

From here, your Apple Watch controls your iPhone as it does by itself. You swipe and tap, just like you do on the Watch itself. The only difference is you can’t use the Crown to navigate like you can the physical one.

This is a great new feature with WatchOS 9 and iOS 16. Anyone who’s ever wanted to control their Apple Watch from the convenience of their iPhone can now do so in just a couple of quick steps.

Apple’s Far Out reveal event is well underway with new iPhones, AirPods, and Apple Watch reveals expected. To kick off the event, we got a first look at the new Apple Watch Series 8.

The Apple Watch Series 8 introduces several new features that we were expecting to see. It features an all-day 18-hour battery life.

And you can get up to 36 hours of battery life with power-saving mode. Power-saving mode turns off some features, like auto workout and always-on display, while keeping others, like activity tracking and fall protection.

Building on fall protection, Apple Watch Series 8 comes with two new motion sensors for crash detection. The watch can detect severe car crashes and automatically contact emergency services and contacts for you.

Apple says it’s committed to women’s health, and the new temperature sensor helps that vision. New temperature sensors on Apple Watch Series 8 can detect shifts in temperatures as slight as 0.1 degrees Celsius.

You can use that temperature information for cycle tracking for women and even give them estimates for when they last ovulated.

Additionally, all health-related information is encrypted on the Watch itself. You can choose what information you want to share and what you don’t.

The Apple Watch Series 8 follows the design of its predecessor, with 41 and 45mm options available.

They’re available for preorder today starting at $399 for GPS models and $499 for cellular models. Orders start today, and the Apple Watch Series 8 will be available on September 16.

The update Watch SE is also here

The new Watch SE also features the new crash detection and display that’s 30 percent larger than Apple Watch Series 3.

An Apple Watch was pivotal in saving a man’s life after a terrible mountain bike crash earlier this year. Ryan McConnaughey says there’s “no way anybody would have found him” if he didn’t have his Apple Watch.

This story starts back in April of this year. 23-year-old Ryan McConnaughey was an avid mountain biker who decide to go for a ride in Spring Valley, California, back in April.

But it turns out this ride would end tragically as McConnaughey flew over his handlebars head first into the ground. The accident left him paralyzed in the middle of nowhere.

Unable to move, McConnaughey was unable to retrieve his iPhone from his backpack. Fortunately, he instinctively thought of the Apple Watch on his wrist and used it to call 911 for rescue.

“That watch saved my life. No doubt about it. No way anybody would have found me,” said McConnaughey in an interview months after the crash.

He was diagnosed as a quadriplegic, but after months of spinal cord rehab, he’s back home thanks to his Apple Watch.

Over the four months since his crash, McConnaughey has been able to regain some of the motion in his arms and wrists. He says that he continues to use his Apple Watch on a day-to-day basis.

This might be one of the best use cases for the Apple Watch that we’ve seen so far. And now, Apple is considering adding satellite connectivity to its future Apple Watch Pro models, allowing them to contact first responders in emergencies even when there is no cell signal.

For Ryan McConnaughey, the Apple Watch is a life-saving device that was there and easy to use when he needed it the most.

The original publication also shared a link for an online fundraising campaign to help Ryan with medical and other various expenses.

We’re about a week away from the next Apple Event, where we expect to hear about the Apple Watch Pro. Rumors are already swirling about its successor, which could gain satellite connectivity.

Mark Gurman at Bloomberg writes in his Power On newsletter this week, “[Apple] has also internally discussed the idea of giving its watches satellite features.”

That’s the same system we’ve heard about inclusion in the iPhone range.

READ MORE: The Apple Watch Pro could feature a massive 49mm watch face

According to reports, the emergency system would have two parts. One is to send SOS messages to emergency services, and a second to report incidents, similar to how Waze and other navigation apps work.

That would make the rugged Apple Watch Pro a contender vs other satellite-equipped devices, like the Garmin inReach. This year’s device isn’t getting the satellite feature, however so what should we expect to see on Sept 7?

What is coming on the first Apple Watch Pro?

Image: KnowTechie

Apple’s next Event is on September 7. We’re expecting the iPhone 14 range and the Apple Watch Series 8. We also expect the Apple Watch Pro, a more rugged (and expensive) model.

We expect the Apple Watch Pro to look different from the other two Apple Watch Series 8 models. It will also feature “a more durable formulation of titanium” to make it more damage-resistant.

The Pro model will get the largest screen ever on an Apple wearable, at 1.99 inches. That would also allow for larger battery size, perfect for its sports users.

Body temperature monitoring will also be featured, as it’s one of the new sensors tipped for the entire Apple Watch Series 8 range. That might show if your temperature is higher than normal instead of showing accurate temperature readings.

We’ll find out how accurate the earlier leaks were in just over a week. Join in as we bring you all the news from the September 7 Apple Event.

The post Rumored Apple Watch ‘Pro’ model could have a giant display appeared first on KnowTechie.

The upcoming Apple Watch ‘Pro’ will be a crowd-pleaser for the larger watch enjoyer. A new report says it will have a screen roughly seven percent larger than the current-largest Apple Watch.

That’ll be enough to display additional health metrics or have a usable on-screen keyboard. Mark Gurman at Bloomberg had the scoop and got another interesting tidbit.

According to his report, the shape of the ‘Pro’ model will also be different. It won’t be as drastic as the squared-off renders we first saw last year, however.

Gurman says it won’t be circular either. Instead, it will be “an evolution of the current rectangular shape.”

Apple is also switching to titanium for the frame on this model. That will make it tougher than any other Apple Watch so far. It also opens options for the rest of the design, as Apple can make the frame smaller while making things tougher.

We may see longer battery life, as Apple will have more internal space to play with. That would pair well with the Low Power mode that is expected to come to the Series 8 watches.

We could also see new sensors to further integrate with Apple Health, with a body temperature sensor hotly tipped to be included.

The new materials and larger screen will push the price higher. When it is announced, expect upwards of $1,000 for the Apple Watch ‘Pro’.

The post The Apple Watch saves a woman’s life after uncovering deadly tumor appeared first on KnowTechie.

One of the most useful aspects of the Apple Watch is its integrated health features. We’ve heard multiple stories of users who credit their watch with saving their lives after a fall or other accident.

Now we have another story of how an Apple Watch has potentially saved another life. According to CBS Boston, doctors uncovered and removed an aggressive tumor from a Maine woman’s body after her Apple Watch discovered some abnormalities.

Back in May, Kim Durkee, an Apple Watch owner, noticed warnings from her smartwatch. The warnings claimed that her heart was experiencing atrial fibrillation (an irregular, rapid heartbeat).

READ MORE: Apple Watch saves mountain biker after crash

Durkee initially thought the watch was malfunctioning, but the warnings continued for a second and third night.

“Then I said you know what, go to the emergency room if they tell you it’s nothing to worry about then toss the watch,” Durkee says.

Doctors quickly confirmed that the atrial fibrillation was real when she got to the hospital. They determined that she had an aggressive tumor, called a myxoma that was cutting off the blood supply to her heart.

After a five-hour open heart surgery at Massachusetts General Hospital, doctors successfully removed the tumor. They claimed that the tumor would have “almost certainly” killed Durkee if it hadn’t been found.

Durkee says that the Apple Watch “truly saved my life.” This is yet another example of the potential health benefits of the device.

While we probably shouldn’t treat it as a medical device, there’s no denying the potential life-saving benefits that the Apple Watch offers.

The Apple Watch is reportedly getting a ‘Pro’ Watch variation this year. That’s because the ‘extreme sports’ edition that we’re all expecting will create a higher performance tier, with a correspondingly higher price.

That’s the musings of Bloomberg‘s Mark Gurman this week, writing in his Power On newsletter. Whatever Apple decides to call this higher tier of Apple Watch, it’ll fill the same base/pro pairing across their iPhone, iPad, AirPod, and Mac line.

We’re expecting to see a larger, stronger, more resistant Apple Watch. That will be to keep up with the expanded hiking and swimming tracking capabilities, making this the most rugged Apple Watch.

READ MORE: The Apple Watch Pro could feature a massive 49mm watch face

Apple already uses stainless steel and aluminum in the Apple Watch. Perhaps titanium will get used with this Pro model. With the focus on extreme sports, expect more shatter-proof glass, and longer battery life.

READ MORE: An upcoming Apple Watch Pro could feature satellite connectivity

Gurman thinks that this smartwatch will appeal to “anyone who might otherwise buy a high-end Garmin sports watch for intense workouts.”

That would work in Apple’s favor, as fitness enthusiasts tend to buy hardware based on which metrics they can track. Apple’s deep integration into Health will also factor in.

And Apple isn’t alone on this shift. Samsung’s Galaxy Watch5 is reportedly going to get a ‘Pro’ model too. Early leaked renders from @evleaks make it look like Samsung is using titanium on the ‘Pro’ version.

Will Apple use the same material? How close in price will they be? We will find out the answers later this year. A new ‘Pro’ era for smartwatches is nearly here.

Apple is reportedly readying its largest smartwatch screen to date. It’s not going in the normal Apple Watch Series 8 though. Instead, Apple is going to use it in an “extreme sportsedition.

That’s the word from Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, who is reliably well-informed about all things Apple. According to the report, the device is rumored to feature a 1.99-inch screen. That’s larger than the 1.9-inch diagonal used on the 45mm Apple Watch Series 7.

Apple is reportedly working on a rugged metal casing to go around that larger screen. That makes sense. The rounded glass design used on the Apple Watch does leave it open to damage. Apple will want to mitigate this on any sports-focused device.

READ MORE: Apple is rumored to be working on a $1,000 Apple Watch Pro

READ MORE: The Apple Watch Pro could feature a massive 49mm watch face

Gurman also says that the metal casing won’t be aluminum, instead, it will be made from a stronger metal. The high-end Apple Watch currently features stainless steel, so perhaps titanium will make an appearance.

Additionally, Apple will use more shatter-resistant glass. It’s not known if this glass will be rounded, like existing Apple Watch models, or flatter, like the rumored designs we’ve seen over the last few years.

READ MORE: An upcoming Apple Watch Pro could feature satellite connectivity

The larger screen real estate could show more fitness metrics. In addition, the rugged Apple Watch will also have a larger battery. Bloomberg states it will “improve tracking metrics like elevation during hiking workouts and data during swimming.”

We’re waiting to hear when Apple will hold its event to release the Apple Watch Series 8. We expect it to be mid-September, alongside the iPhone 14 launch.

The post When is the new Apple Watch coming out? appeared first on KnowTechie.

]]>
This year, the Apple Watch Series 8 might come with some new differences. We’ve heard about flatter glass, a larger screen size, and even a rugged version. But when is the Apple Watch Series 8 release date?

We’re all excited to know more about the rumored sensor that can detect if you have a fever. The Low Power Mode that lets you use apps while sipping power sounds great. This might even be the year that we get blood pressure monitoring, to add to Apple’s Health stack.

None of those questions matter right now, however. The only important piece of information is the release date. So, when is it?

So, when is the new Apple Watch coming out?

Short answer: Fall 2022

Every single Apple Watch has been announced in September, except for the original, which was in April of 2015.

Apple has released the wearable alongside that year’s iPhone range, except for 2020 when the iPhone didn’t get announced until the month after.

As to when in September, we have a couple of pointers. Apple almost always has its iPhone and Apple Watch event on the second Tuesday of September. Sometimes it’s been the second Wednesday. Expect the second week of September again this year, so that’s September 13 or 14.

Of course, this Apple Watch Series 8 release date prediction might not be accurate. Delays are always possible, and even if the wearable is announced, we might have to wait to be able to order one.

Last year, there was about a month gap between announcement and release. Global supply chains have recovered somewhat, so maybe that gap will reduce this time around.

We’ll have to wait to find out exactly when the Apple Watch Series 8 will be released. Until then, we’ll keep bringing you all the rumors as we find them out.

A feature that could tell you if you have a fever is likely coming to the Apple Watch Series 8. Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman has been speculating about the potential temperature reading for months, and it looks like his predictions will come true.

In Gurman’s recent Power On newsletter, he spoke yet again about the potential of a temperature reader on the Apple Watch Series 8. At this point, he believes that the feature will be ready for the Series 8. The Apple Watch Series 8 will likely come in the fall of this year.

In addition to Gurman, market analyst Ming-Chi Kuo has also stated that they expect the feature in this year’s Apple Watch model.

READ MORE: Apple plans to launch an ‘extreme sports’ version of its Apple Watch

However, it doesn’t look like the new Apple Watch will be able to give precise temperature readings. Instead, it looks like it will simply be able to detect if a user has a fever.

It will likely only read that a body temperature is higher than normal. Then, it will suggest that wearers use a thermometer or contact a doctor for a precise reading.

READ MORE: Apple is rumored to be working on a $1,000 Apple Watch Pro

As of now, it looks like the feature will be available on both the Series 8 and the rumored rugged smartwatch from Apple. The entry-level Apple Watch SE will likely skip this feature.

Of course, these are just rumors until we hear an official announcement from Apple. The Apple Watch Series 8 will likely be announced in September alongside the iPhone 14.

Apple typically keeps its upcoming device specs under tight wraps. That doesn’t stop analysts from looking at the supply chain, however, and a new rumor says we’re getting another screen size for the Apple Watch this year.

That screen size is a larger, 1.99-inch display. A 1.99-inch diagonal would mean a 50mm Apple Watch, so the 45mm won’t be the largest size anymore.

The report comes from Ross Young of DSCC, a consultancy that specializes in analyzing the supply chain for display technology. He’s been right far more than not.

READ MORE: The Apple Watch Series 8 could let you know if you have a fever

Adding to the accuracy of the report is an investor’s note written by Jeff Pu of Haitong International Securities. MacRumors saw the note written by Pu, which mentioned Luxshare (who also manufactures AirPods) being the “sole supplier” for a 2-inch Apple Watch to come out this year.

That makes two big sources, all but confirming that a larger screen is coming this year.

Could this new screen also be the squared-off design that was rumored for the Apple Watch Series 7? One leaker, ShrimpApplePro, said a source said that a “flat front glass display” is coming for Apple Watch.

READ MORE: Apple plans to launch an ‘extreme sports’ version of its Apple Watch

They have a mixed record for accuracy, but we’ve known for a while that Apple was working on a flatter screen design.

It’s also possible this screen size could point to a more-rugged Apple Watch that we’ve been hearing about. A rugged casing, a larger screen for mapping, and a possibly larger battery would all be great for outdoor pursuits.
