Amazon has a new feature in its Shopper Panel that pays users $2 a month to monitor their phones.

The Ad Verification program is part of the invite-only Amazon Shopper Panel program. When users opt-in, it allows Amazon to track which ads the user sees as they use their device.

That is a worrying privacy concern, with Amazon being able to see your browsing data.

The way the feature is enabled is also worrying. Amazon requires users to replace their DNS provider with DNS servers maintained by the company.

That allows for ad tracking and access to information about the user’s browsing habits.

From Amazon’s FAQ about the program, the DNS server will provide a “different, Amazon-owned IP address that allows us to confirm you saw an ad from Amazon, and where and when you saw it, for example the app or website where you viewed the ad and the time of day you viewed it.”

The Ad Verification program is only available in the US and UK. It’s also invite-only, with Amazon not releasing details of how they choose participants.

Is your privacy only worth $2 a month? We don’t think so, and neither should anyone else.

Meta had a similar program, the “Facebook Research” app, that paid teenagers $20 monthly to monitor their mobile phones. The company shut the app down in 2019 amid mounting pressure.

Google also had a similar program that snooped on everything a user did on the internet and paid them in Amazon gift cards. Again, that was shut down in 2019.

The thing is, these companies already know everything about us. Please don’t give them more access to your private data. It’s yours. Don’t let Amazon monitor your mobile phone.

You can now use Amazon’s Echo Show 15 as a Fire TV https://knowtechie.com/you-can-now-use-amazons-echo-show-15-as-a-fire-tv/ Thu, 08 Dec 2022 17:46:37 +0000 https://knowtechie.com/?p=261022 The update is completely free for all Echo Show 15 users.

The post You can now use Amazon’s Echo Show 15 as a Fire TV appeared first on KnowTechie.

Amazon’s wall-mountable Echo Show 15 smart display can now be used as a miniature Fire TV thanks to a free update.

Amazon promised to bring the Fire TV experience to the Echo Show 15 in September. The company found that over 70 percent of Echo Show 15 users use the device to watch videos.

Now, you’ll be able to stream video from a wide range of apps on your Echo Show 15.

You’ll have access to the entire Fire TV catalog, including popular apps like YouTube, Prime Video, Netflix, and more.

You can navigate through the various streaming apps on the Echo Show 15 using Alexa or with controls in the Fire TV app on your phone.

Additionally, you can pair an Alexa Voice Remote or use the virtual remote on the Show 15 itself for apps without touch recognition.

The Echo Show 15 falls into a niche category with smart home displays.

The main difference between it and other devices is that it mounts directly to the wall.

That might not be the ideal option for everyone. But it can be really useful to help control a smart home with tons of smart devices connected to one another.

And now you can enjoy the entire Fire TV experience on the Echo Show 15 whenever you want.

To help celebrate its new free update, Amazon is offering a limited-time deal on an Echo Show 15 and Alexa Voice Remote bundle.

You can get the full bundle for $194.99, saving you $85.

Alexa will lose around $10 billion for Amazon in 2022 https://knowtechie.com/alexa-will-lose-around-10-billion-for-amazon-in-2022/ Tue, 22 Nov 2022 14:25:09 +0000 https://knowtechie.com/?p=257845 People aren't buying things through Alexa like Amazon wants.

The post Alexa will lose around $10 billion for Amazon in 2022 appeared first on KnowTechie.

]]>
Alexa has been one of Amazon’s biggest projects, but the voice assistant and its related products will lose the company around $10 billion this year.

A recent report from Insider explains how the company’s plans to monetize Alexa and Echo products have yet to come to fruition.

Worldwide Digital is the department at Amazon that oversees Alexa, Echo devices, and Prime Video. Insider collected documents showing that the department lost $3 billion in the first quarter of 2022 alone.

Image: Amazon

Originally, the idea behind Alexa and Echo devices was a simple one.

Amazon hoped that people would use its voice assistant to make purchases through Echo devices. However, that didn’t stick the way the company hoped.

Alexa has become relatively popular in people’s homes, reaching around a billion weekly interactions. However, most of these interactions are not monetizable, meaning Amazon isn’t making any money when you use Alexa.

Additionally, Alexa devices have been the center of a few controversies. The platform was ridiculed in 2018 for sending audio recordings to the wrong person.

Image: Amazon

And just last year, Alexa encouraged children to complete a challenge to electrocute themselves on wall outlets.

Just last week, reports of thousands of Amazon layoffs hit the headlines. It was later confirmed that many of those layoffs came from Amazon’s Devices & Services team, overseeing Alexa development.

Amazon’s Alexa likely isn’t going anywhere soon. But it looks like the company will have to adjust its goals for the product if it wants to make Alexa and related devices profitable in the future.

Venmo is now accepted on Amazon https://knowtechie.com/venmo-is-now-accepted-on-amazon/ Wed, 26 Oct 2022 17:33:26 +0000 https://knowtechie.com/?p=251585 The new integration is rolling out to the US before Black Friday.

Amazon wants to give you more choices as the retail giant rolls out Venmo as a payment option.

The payment processing partnership was first announced almost a year ago. It’s no surprise why the companies decided this is the time to roll out the option; Black Friday is coming in just over a month.

That makes this the prime shopping period for U.S. customers on Amazon leading into the busy holiday period.

Amazon now lets you pay with Venmo

venmo payments on amazon
Image: KnowTechie

To use Venmo on Amazon, you’ll have to add it as a payment method during checkout. You’ll also need the Venmo app installed on your device, as you’ll have to confirm the linking through the app.

Then you can use Venmo for all your future Amazon purchases if you want. The neat thing about using Venmo is that you can then split the purchase with other Venmo users. Handy for gift purchases.

You’ll also benefit from Venmo’s Purchase Protection Program and Amazon’s A-to-Z guarantee.

Do you know who wins here?

Sure, Venmo users will be able to buy things on Amazon, but they could already use other methods, including Venmo’s debit card.

And Venmo is already the “dominant peer-to-peer payment app in the U.S.,” with 52.2% of all mobile payment users in 2022.

The real winner here is Amazon. Venmo’s user base is younger than other digital payment options. It’s the most used payment app among teens, the next generation of Amazon Prime subscribers.

If you’re planning on using Venmo for your Amazon purchases, make your transactions private. Nobody wants to see how often you order things except Amazon, which they already know.

The post Here are your free Prime Gaming games for October 2022 appeared first on KnowTechie.

]]>
As we inch closer to October, Amazon is offering up a new batch of free games for Amazon Prime members through Prime Gaming.

If you didn’t know already, one of the unique perks that Amazon offers to its Prime subscribers is a batch of free PC games every month. Additionally, there’s a constantly rotating schedule of free in-game content with Prime Gaming.

Over the course of October, you can snag seven different games for free with your Prime subscription.

And the games will be yours forever after you claim them, even if your Prime membership runs out. So let’s see what’s up for grabs.

Prime Gaming free games for October 2022

As always, Amazon kicks off this month’s free Prime Gaming games with a few exciting, AAA titles. First up is Fallout 76, the open-world multiplayer entry to the classic post-apocalyptic RPG.

Next, Amazon is offering Total War: Warhammer II. This game lets you build your own army as you move to conquer your enemies. It combines turn-based tactics with real-time combat for an epic, unique experience.

Also up for grabs is Middle-Earth: Shadow of War. This is the sequel to Middle-Earth: Shadow of Mordor, which Amazon gave away in September.

Glass Masquerade: Origins is the next title up for grabs. It’s an artistic puzzle game where you create beautiful stained-glass clocks using shattered pieces as puzzle pieces.

Next up for grabs is Loom. Loom is a musical point-and-click adventure where it’s up to you to save the universe. Hero’s Hour is a real-time combat RPG with a retro feel and heavy strategy aspects.

Finally, Horace is a story-rich platformer following the journey of a small robot looking to find himself through pop culture

Free in-game content

The Prime Gaming rewards every month don’t stop with just the free games. Amazon also offers tons of free in-game content for several popular games.

Unlike the free games, the in-game content doesn’t necessarily revolve on a monthly basis. Amazon is constantly rotating free content in and out, so it’s best to keep an eye on the Prime Gaming website regularly.

Right now, the in-game content up for grabs includes free stuff from many popular games, like Fall Guys, Rainbow Six Siege, Pokémon GO, and many more.

When you’re on the Prime Gaming website, click the In-game Content tab to see the free content currently up for grabs. You won’t want to miss out on this.

Take full advantage of your subscription with Prime Gaming

Prime Gaming is yet another great benefit that comes with your Amazon Prime subscription. And for gamers, it’s one you want to take advantage of.

First of all, you get a few free AAA games for free every month that will be yours forever. Plus, all of the free in-game content offered up regularly can be great for games you already play.

Be sure to check out the Prime Gaming website regularly to see what kind of content and games are up for grabs. It’s all free with a Prime membership, so why not take advantage?

Amazon added two new higher-end QLED Fire TVs to its range yesterday. The Omni QLED TVs are available in sizes of 65-inch for $800 and 75-inch for $1,100.

The 4K TVs use QLED as their panel technology, which should mean better color accuracy and contrast to the budget-focused end of Amazon’s Fire TV range.

That panel technology uses quantum dot film over the backlit panel to create richer color than is possible normally.

The new TVs also feature “up to” 96 local dimming zones, HDR10+ Adaptive, and Dolby Vision IQ. They also have support for HLG, HDR10, and HDR10+ Gaming.

A new trick that the rest of the Fire TV range doesn’t have is made possible by new sensors for ambient light and presence. The TV knows when you’re not around to watch it and can display artwork at those times if you should choose to.

That’s cool and a feature typically found on much more expensive TV sets, like Samsung’s Frame TV series. You can also opt to have Alexa widgets displayed, turning your smart TV into a sizeable smart display.

The ambient light sensor also optimizes the brightness of whatever you’re watching. That should mean better watchability throughout the day.

Amazon has included three HDMI 2.0 ports and one HDMI 2.1 with eARC. The Omni range also has Ethernet, Wi-Fi, and microphones, so you can ask Alexa to control the TV anytime. You can disable the microphones if you prefer.

Preorders are live at Amazon, with an October 27 release date. Best Buy also carries Fire TV models, although they don’t appear to have a preorder page up yet.

The Kindle Scribe is an e-reader you can write on https://knowtechie.com/the-kindle-scribe-is-an-e-reader-you-can-write-on/ Wed, 28 Sep 2022 19:38:22 +0000 https://knowtechie.com/?p=243583 The 10.2-inch E Ink screen can be written on, a first for a Kindle.

The post The Kindle Scribe is an e-reader you can write on appeared first on KnowTechie.

]]>
Amazon just announced its first Kindle that you can write on, the $339.99 Kindle Scribe. It’s available to preorder today, with a November 30 release date.

The 10.2-inch E Ink screen has 300 PPI, the same resolution quality as the current Paperwhite. It’s front-lit and has an adjustable warm light.

That PPI specification is essential. Until now, most larger E Ink screens had a lower resolution than the smaller ones.

Amazon managed to keep the quality while scaling up to a larger screen, making it feel like your notes are going onto paper.

The Kindle Scribe comes with a “Basic Pen,” Amazon’s name for its Wacom EMR-equipped stylus.

You can also pay another $30 for a “Premium Pen,” which comes with a customizable shortcut button and a sensor on the top that works like an eraser.

Neither pen needs charging, ever, which is super nice for those of use who are forgetful. They also magnetically attach to the side of the Kindle Scribe.

Amazon has built a whole new note-taking system into this Kindle. You can tap to highlight parts of the text, then scrawl your notes in the box that appears. Those are then stored inside your Kindle account.

You’ll eventually be able to see those notes inside the Kindle app or on your other devices. You’ll also get a “send to Scribe” button inside Microsoft Word, so you can switch to the device that’s most suitable to work on.

Amazon says the battery life will be 12 weeks if you read for about half an hour daily or three weeks if you write for half an hour daily.

Expect those figures to drop substantially if you’re a heavy user, but you’ll still get decent battery stats based on our experience with Kindles.

You can preorder the Kindle Scribe today. The 16GB with the Basic Pen is $339.99, or you can get various options up to the most expensive version.

That option comes with 64GB of storage, and the Premium Pen, for $419.99. There are also multiple bundles with covers and power adapters.

Amazon’s Astro Robot gets new pet detection and security features https://knowtechie.com/amazons-astro-robot-gets-pet-detection-and-new-security-features/ Wed, 28 Sep 2022 19:22:08 +0000 https://knowtechie.com/?p=243594 And a new SDK means more new software will soon be developed.

The post Amazon’s Astro Robot gets new pet detection and security features appeared first on KnowTechie.

Amazon revealed its Astro Robot almost a year ago as a Day One version of a personal robot assistant. Initially lacking in features, Amazon is still focused on improving the robot.

Earlier today, Amazon shared a few updates for the Astro Robot at its latest gadget event.

The robot will soon get pet detection, new home monitoring features, and another update that transforms the robot into a security guard. The feature will be available later this year.

Pet detection was one of Amazon’s most requested features for the Astro Robot, according to an interview with TechCrunch. It allows the robot to notify you with video whenever it detects your furry friends.

The company has also added a new Ring integration to Astro Robot. In addition, Amazon is adding a Virtual Security Guard feature, transforming the robot into a security guard for businesses.

This integration will allow Astro Robot to monitor your office (as long as there are no stairs) for any disturbances.

Once it detects a disturbance, the robot will connect to your local security company, where an operator can assess the situation and dial in emergency services if needed.

Amazon will initially test the Virtual Security Guard feature with a limited number of businesses before rolling it out completely.

So Amazon is finally equipping its robot with additional useful features. But this is still just the beginning.

The company’s head of consumer robotics, Ken Washington, spoke to TechCrunch about Astro Robot’s software development kit (SDK).

It’s what the company used to add pet detection, and Amazon is now sharing the SDK with three universities.

“When you give universities access to SDK and technology like this, they come up with all kinds of really great ideas,” Washington said.

So be on the lookout for even more updates on Amazon’s Astro Robot soon. At this time, Amazon’s Astro Robot is available exclusively by invitation. Buyers can request an invite here.

Amazon’s second Prime Day sale of the year starts on October 11 https://knowtechie.com/amazons-second-prime-day-sale-of-the-year-starts-on-october-11/ Mon, 26 Sep 2022 13:17:45 +0000 https://knowtechie.com/?p=242572 Get ready for tons of deals and more online retail chaos.

The post Amazon’s second Prime Day sale of the year starts on October 11 appeared first on KnowTechie.

]]>
It looks like one Prime Day sale wasn’t enough online retail madness for Amazon this year. The company has been teasing a second Prime Day event, and it’s officially taking place on October 11 and 12.

Amazon is actually calling this sale the ‘Prime Early Access Sale,’ but it’s essentially the same type of sale as Prime Day. It’s early access leading up to the busy holiday shopping season and Black Friday on November 25.

This is the first time Amazon has offered two similar sales in a single year. It generally only offers a Prime Day event over a weekend during the summer. Then, it saves the rest of the major deals for Black Friday.

But you can get a jump start on any of your holiday shopping this year with the Prime Early Access Sale.

The sale will cover hundreds of thousands of products across Amazon’s website. Like Prime Day, it does require an active Prime membership to get these deals.

To help everyone get in the “holiday” spirit, Amazon will be running a Top 100 list that shows the most popular giftable items included in the sale.

Additionally, there will be a ‘Toys We Love’ list. It will comprise tons of toys and other gifts from different brands to help you find the perfect gifts for your loved ones.

Some early deals are available on Amazon right now, leading up to the Prime Early Access Sale. Head to the Prime Early Access Sale landing page to check out some deals.

And keep your eye on the website on October 11 and 12. Amazon typically goes all out for its Prime Day sales. And we expect that the Prime Early Access Sale won’t be any different.

Amazon’s updated Fire tablets start at just $99 https://knowtechie.com/amazons-updated-fire-tablets-start-at-just-99/ Thu, 22 Sep 2022 15:12:58 +0000 https://knowtechie.com/?p=241490 Four new models are available, with preorders already open.

The post Amazon’s updated Fire tablets start at just $99 appeared first on KnowTechie.

]]>
Amazon has been refreshing its Fire tablets this year, and now it’s the turn for the Fire HD 8. The $99.99 tablet is now faster, thinner, and also lighter to carry.

Amazon says that the new Fire HD 8 is 30% faster than the previous model. It still charges via USB-C, with a five-hour charging time, and a 13-hour battery life. You also get 2GB of RAM, and either 32GB or 64GB of storage.

That’s not the only refreshed 8-inch tablet Amazon just announced. Keep reading below to learn more bout the HD 8 Plus and the HD 8 Kids tablets, as well.

Fire HD 8 Plus

The Fire HD 8 Plus is $129.99, with better specifications for the extra cash. You get faster charging, at three hours from zero to full. You also get wireless charging, but the tablet won’t charge quite as quickly.

The Plus model also has a more powerful processor than the base model. The last change is that you get a sharper camera, which as anyone who has used a base-level Fire tablet knows, is great news.

Fire HD 8 Kids and Fire HD 8 Kids Pro ($150)

Then there’s a duo of tablets for kids. Both cost $149.99 and come with a one-year subscription to Amazon Kids+ and a two-year warranty. Both also have a 30% faster Hexa-core processor, 2GB of RAM, and 32GB of storage.

The Fire HD 8 Kids comes with a protective cover in various designs and can be purchased with 64GB of storage for $179.99. This is aimed at younger users and is set up to only draw from the Kids+ content.

There are also Disney versions, for $159.99, with either Mickey Mouse or Disney Princess cases.

The Fire HD 8 Kids Pro is set up for school-age kids, with access to the Amazon Appstore so kids can request apps they want to install from their parent or guardian.

All four tablets are available to preorder, with Amazon shipping them next month.

Amazon refreshes Kindle range with USB-C and better screens https://knowtechie.com/amazon-refreshes-kindle-range-with-usb-c-and-better-screens/ Tue, 13 Sep 2022 15:58:17 +0000 https://knowtechie.com/?p=236542 Finally, a modern charging port.

The post Amazon refreshes Kindle range with USB-C and better screens appeared first on KnowTechie.

]]>
Amazon has refreshed the entry-level Kindle, which now features USB-C for the first time. It’s also getting many other improvements, all for a low $99 price.

Amazon has put a 300 ppi display into the base Kindle this year. The same pixel density as the Paperwhite, offering “laser-quality” text and images.

Then they doubled the storage to 16GB. The battery life is also longer, up to six weeks on a charge. That battery now recharges via USB-C, although there’s no mention of fast charging.

Amazon also makes a big point to mention that the black color is 75% post-consumer recycled plastics, with 30% used in the denim color (shown above).

The magnesium used inside the frame is also 90% recycled, and the packaging is now 100% recyclable.

Let’s not forget how many trees a Kindle full of ebooks can save. 16GB of storage space with an average 3MB for an ebook gives you over 5,000 ebooks.

One tree can make 8,333 sheets of paper. That’s 63 books roughly. A little napkin math gives us 79 trees saved by filling up your Kindle. Whew.

Amazon Kindle Kids (2022)

The new $119.99 Kindle Kids gets all the upgrades of the normal Kindle. It also comes with a cover in various bright designs, a two-year warranty, and a 1-year subscription to Amazon Kids+.

That means they’ll always have something to read, from the thousands of books and hundreds of audiobooks on the subscription. They’re also age-appropriate, so you can rest easy knowing your kids are safe.

The all-new Kindle and all-new Kindle Kids will be available on October 12.
